160 pitches, 120 electric hook-up(10amp), open all year, accessory shop, play area, dog walk, storage, 2 rally fields, free showers.

When you enter this site through the zoo car park you get a bad feeling about it (wrong). The road is very rough and the buildings look like a dodgy industrial estate, but this is where they hold a mainly indoor Sunday market.

The site has a clean and modern central toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled, dish washing and laundry. This is surrounded by an area without electric hook-ups or pitch markers, some tents were very close to each other. Around the edge of the site it is divided by tall hedges into large bays, each one has 6 large pitches

The main feature of the site is obviously the zoo, you can pay once then use the pass as many times as you want while your on site.
There is also applewood hall which provides entertainment most weekends in the summer including bands, country & western nights, cabarets etc. We didn’t use this so I can’t comment on quality. I think you have to buy tickets in advance for these nights.
Just across the road from the entrance is Appleyard shopping village a small courtyard with a pub/restaurant (good priced food) that also does a takeaway service. There is also a bakery, small Spar supermarket, cidery, craft shop a newsagent and a hairdresser.
First impressions were not good but this was proven wrong. We had 5 days in June 1999 on the site and would recommend it.
The site also has 2 rally fields one of 4 acre and the other of 14 acre both with their own toilet facilities and I think electric hook-ups.

120 pitches on 9 acres (all with electric hook-up)

As with all the CC sites we have visited, Broadlands is well up to CC standards.

Most pitches were grass, but there were several hard standing, all service pitches. All the pitches were large, offering plenty of space for caravan, awning and car/cars, still leaving ample space for sitting, BBQs etc. At the time of our visit many of the pitches were water logged, and were closed (the weather hadn’t been that good a couple of weeks previously )

The toilet/shower block was well up to CC standards, but the 7 showers did get busy during peak times. The showers are free, spacious and heat adjustable. My moans about somewhere to put my glasses and somewhere dry to dress were negated here as a shelf and plenty of hooks were provided, and due to the design, you didn’t get splashed by the shower next door.

There are plans for a new block to be built, so more showers should be available during peak times.

There is a dedicated loo for disabled visitors, and one of the men’s showers was adapted for disabled use. There was wheelchair access to the toilet/shower block.

Dogs are welcome on this site, but there was no dog walk on site. Most people I saw with dogs had the little pooh bags (I don’t think I’ll ever ask for a doggie bag again, BG)

The kid’s playground is good. It is placed by the shower block and next to reception. It has all the normal swings, slides etc, and it is fenced with gates to keep the little darlings in :o) I did become a little concerned about the closeness of this playground to the road outside. Admittedly, kids had to pass reception to get to the open entrance, and you couldn’t expect the staff to be vigilant all the time…….. A small moan, but it did worry me.

The amenities around the site are.

Shop about 100 yards from site entrance for groceries, bread, milk, newspapers etc.
Restaurant. Next door to shop, but you need to book in the afternoon or early evening.
The Dog Inn pub. Good meals, no need to book, but be prepared to wait a while when they are busy. They have a family room, so all can go.
River Ant is only 100 yards from entrance. You can walk the banks for a short distance, but not far.

We went during the school holidays, so there were a lot of kids on the site. We had chosen a pitch that was a bit more secluded than most, and our neighbours were about the same age as us, so we had the peace and quiet we look for.

We are sun chasers. We tend to go south and south west. This was our first venture north of London. I had always wanted to see the Norfolk Broads, and as my sister lives in Wroxham, it gave us a good reason to go.

For those reading this, who live outside of the UK. The Norfolk Broads is the inland boating centre of England, offering about 160 miles of navigable rivers, and many Broads (lakes). It seems the Broads were formed many many years ago by the excavation of peat for fuel use. After many years the peat diggings were abandoned, as the nearby rivers seeped into them. The name Broad was used to describe a section of a river where it got wider as it ran through an old peat dig.

Of course, the area is dedicated to boating, and the rivers and broads do get busy during peak holiday times, but there are plenty of other attractions.
Wroxham is about 10 minutes drive away, and is a hive of activity during the day. I guess that it is the same in the evening.
The first thing you notice about Wroxham is Roys. Almost every shop in the main street is owned by Roys !!
Boats can be hired, of course, by the hour, or day, or week. Lyn and I took a river trip that lasted 1.1/2 hours. Great Yarmouth is not that far away, and has a good beach, which is a mixture of sandy beach and sand dunes, to the left of the main pier. Lyn and I avoided the pier area as this got very crowded.
Great Yarmouth at night is like a mini Las Vagas. The whole of the front was lit up with neon signs as the various arcades vied for custom. We went into Norwich and would recommend a visit to it’s Cathedral. Just feast your eyes on the west wing window....stunning ! There is a castle in Norwhich but we didn’t have time to see this. There is a good shopping centre there, but we found it difficult to park the car.

We went to Lowestoft, but we didn’t much other than sea port.

Croma was quiet quaint and interesting. Lots of steps.

Cycling. We found Reepham Station, where you could cycle many miles in either direction on a disused railway. Kerri’s Farmhouse Pine is worth some time. It’s at Reepham Station as well.

All in all we enjoyed our stay at Broadlands. I don’t think we would be tempted back to the area though. If your ’into’ boating then this is ’the’ place for you, we’re not so it was lost on us.

110 pitches with electric hook-ups, including 93 hardstanding. Maximum outfit length 8.5 metres.
Reception issue you with a key for the facilities block.
Bus service to Norwich and Yarmouth apparently but I have no idea of times as we didn't use it.

Standard caravan club site, most of the info in the previous review still applies, not really got much to add!

Potter Heigham is a nice little centre if you are into watching or participating in the boating side of things. Lathams store there sell allsorts of stuff, including fishing equipment if you wish to go fishing whilst you are around the broads.

Caister-on-Sea
Great Yarmouth
Norfolk
NR30 5NQ

Tel: 01493 728 931 (direct to site)

Web site: www.haven.com/touring-camping/...

Directions:
Easy to find Touring has it’s own entrance to the site. Although when we arrived the on–site chippies van was obscuring the sign for the separate entrance, which is on the Town side of the site.

For Haven it’s small and compact and has it’s own beach too.

The site is new to touring in 2010

Pitches:
46 Euro pitches have reinforced grass base, grass awning With a good tarmaced access roads
Slightly sloping (the website says flat but it’s not quite)
Each pitch is clearly marked, and large enough for Van Awning with the car next to it and loads of space (over 6 metres between units)
Each pitch has 16amp water & drain plus Analogue TV on the illuminated pylon

Heated shower block with 9 WC’s, 8 showers, baby changing, shaving point and hairdryer**
Separate shower and WC for disabled guests
Covered dishwashing area with 2 sinks

2 minute walk to the Park facilities

Pup tents not accepted according to the site rules as are awning annexes not allowed but both seen on site

Dogs welcome.

The Park:
The Park’s central facilities offer “holiday fun” (according to Haven) with a large refurbished heated indoor pool complex with slide and bubble pool and an outdoor “Fun Tower” with it’s Climbing Wall with Absailing and Zip Wire. There’s a crazy golf and Sports multipitch, There is also archery, pay as you play Fencing and football coaching, and pay as you play water activities. It’s just a short stroll (unusually for Haven) to the wide sandy beach with the Broads and Great Yarmouth a few miles away.

There’s a SPAR Convenience Store with Gift Shop which is open all hours, a Hair Dressing & Beauty Salon and a Launderette on site

Grab a bite to eat or drink at the Mash and Barrel (found on every Haven site) whilst you do your emails on their FREE Wi-Fi (no codes just a Haven advert home page). Usual Funworks amusements to get through first though. Or the adults only Old Cottage Inn. There’s the Neptune’s ShowBar with amusements arcade too. There’s an on–site Fish and Chips as well as the usual Pa Johns Pizza with free delivery to your pitch.

Locally:
Lots to see from The Gate to the Roman fort at Caister and the Car museum at Caister Castle, to the Broads and Great Yarmouth and all it has to offer. Yarmouth beach

Impression of site:
Surprised actually as this is the SMALLEST Haven site we have been too. The surprises continued with lack of security which seemed to only be INSIDE the Neptune’s Showbar, and during the night when they regularly patrolled the site. Then FREE Wi-Fi really pleased us

Generally prices were similar to other Haven sites but Locally prices seemed to be lower than our hometown

The Caravan Club advises the use of of the A134 from Thetford, joining the A1064 at Mundford.

Market day here is Friday.

We stayed five nights at this CC site, The Covert at Swaffham, Norfolk. Located on (and in) the edge of Thetford Forest this is a beautiful site with hook-ups, but there are no toilet or shower facilities here.

Vans are pitched in forest glades or on hard standing around the perimeter of the site. Numerous Roe Deer and Munkjacks inhabit the forest - there are wonderful woodland walks of course. Excellent site wardens here. Lots of military and airforce ’things’ to go see in this area plus a good selection of NT, steam engine, and garden attractions.

California
Great Yarmouth
Norfolk
NR29 3QW

Current fees - contact site for details

I've been camping at this site at least once a year since 1998, and although it's not exactly 5-star I think it's a great site in a great location, and personally I wouldn't stay anywhere else. It has three sections - static caravans, a touring field for caravans and motorhomes and a large tent field where motorhomes and campervans are also allowed to pitch. The statics are all privately owned and can be booked direct with the owners (a list of owners is available from reception) and these are nearest to the site entrance; the touring field is beyond the statics, sheltered on one side by tall trees and all the pitches have hook-up points. The camping field is on the cliff top with a limited number of designated pitches having a hook-up point - if you don't want or need a hook-up then you can basically just pitch wherever you want. It can get very windy though so take plenty of tent pegs! Steps at one end of the field take you to the path leading down onto the beach which is spitting distance away, and at the other end of the field is a long area of heath ideal for dog walking - one of my favourite early morning walks is through the heath to the end and back up the beach.

At the site entrance is a small amusement arcade and a shop which sells swimwear and beach stuff, gifts, and most things in the way of food and household stuff. Directly across from the entrance is the California Tavern, a very nice pub/restaurant which does lovely meals at reasonable prices, and almost next door to it there's a take-away with indoor seating. On the site itself is the Beachcomber Bar, a small licensed clubhouse which now serves breakfasts and has evening entertainment on at the weekends. Children and dogs are allowed in but only up to 9pm. The main toilet and shower block, which includes disabled facilities, is just across from reception, and although it looks dated from the outside it's reasonably modern inside and everything is always very clean. The showers are hot (and free) and there are hairdryer and shaver points. Also in the same block is the laundry room with a coin-operated washing machine and dryer, iron and ironing board and deep sinks for pot washing - and the hot water really is hot. There's a smaller toilet block with a chemical disposal point adjacent to the tent field and another toilet/shower block and cdp in the touring area.

Site reception is open during Easter and May bank holidays then daily from the end of May to the end of September - if you have a problem and reception is closed then you only need to knock at the nearby bungalow as that's where the owner lives. He's always very pleasant and helpful and will go out of his way to deal with any problems. Calor Gas and Camping Gaz are available from reception, also various items of camping equipment, postage stamps and mobile phone top-ups. There's also a large range of information leaflets available and you can buy tickets for various Norfolk attractions for a price a bit lower than the normal admission charges.

A short walk down the lane is a chalet site with a swimming pool open to residents of other sites in the area and with a nice cafe adjacent to it. A couple of minutes drive takes you to Scratby post office and general store, the mini-market part is open until midnight so ideal if you find you've run out of milk for your bedtime brew. There's also a good garden centre there and an antique clock place housed in a separate cottage. Just over a mile to the north is Hemsby with its many gift shops, cafes and amusement arcades and a market held each Sunday and Tuesday, and if you fancy leaving your car on site it's a lovely walk along the beach to Hemsby Gap. Great Yarmouth with all its shops and promenade attractions is about five miles south, and seven miles inland is the village of Potter Heigham, one of the boating centres of the Broads. There's a big store there called Latham's, it's one of those places which seems to sell everything and if you don't want anything when you go in you'll more than likely come out with something - there's also a nice in-store cafe which does the most divine cream-filled Belgian buns.

To me there's only one slight niggle about the camp site itself and that's the tv reception - it's very poor on the touring area and you'll need a reasonably tall aerial. That could be because of the tall trees along one side, as I've previously found that reception on the camping field has been ok. Other than that, as long as you don't expect all the bells and whistles it's a good site in a lovely area, and very well placed for getting to the Broads and other Norfolk attractions

Fakenham racecourse is a caravan club affiliated site. It is an excellent alternative to the club site on the Sandringham Estate.
There are 80 pitches (with 15 amp electric hook-up and TV) on a mixture of grass or hard standing and scattered around the perimeter of the racecourse.
The field behind reception is occupied in the main by the seasonal tourers. The main field behind the Prince of Wales stand is a large open area. There are other pitches around the rails of the course and behinds the collecting ring. All pitches are numbered and have electric hook up and TV aerial access on the bollards. Your own lead is required.
In addition to caravan pitches two separate fields are available for tent campers. There is no specific play area for children but there is plenty of space to let them run wild #45; well away from the caravans!

Access to the site is down a private road past Fakenham Sports Centre. There is a wide range of sporting facilities available here including tennis, golf, gym etc. the centre also has a social club, bar and restaurant. Social membership is available for £3 to those staying on the site. We did not try these facilities. However I will return to the site in the future for a golf weekend.

On our visit in mid June the site was about half full but did not seem overcrowded or busy due to the spacious layout. Water and waste pipes are never more than a few yards away on this site.
Three toilet blocks serve the sections of the site. One in the rear of a stand is older but spotless none the less. It is solely for the use of caravans. Another newer one is also only for caravans. The one in the Prince of Wales stand is new and modern but can on occasion be closed if there is a function on in the stand itself. I also spotted 3 elsan disposal points.
Laundry facilities are in the second of the above blocks. Recycling facilities are also available.

Reception stocks basics groceries and toilet fluids and papers can be ordered here. The shops in Fakenham are only a couple of miles away.

We liked this site and thought it a very useful alternative the CC site on the Sandringham Estate. I was unable to book there for more than one night. We called when visiting Sandringham itself and it was very busy. Must confess we preferred the atmosphere at Fakenham.

A view of the site and waterway

A very high standard CL, where the owner’s do not live on site but visit their friends who stay there daily. The sites occupants meet each year and tend to book years in advance, so if you get in you are lucky and are treated with friendship and kindness.

The site facilities were spotless, there is a shower/toilet (tokens are old 50p coins) which costs 50p(disabled access? possibly wheelchair too). There is a separate toilet as well.

The pitches are widely spaced about the grounds of the old boat yard, which is for private vessels only now. Electric hook-ups easily reachable and water is centrally placed the site.

We only stayed two nights due to family pressure but the fishing there was and has been difficult for a couple of years, though roach of 400gm are easily caught as are Perch and eels, all around the same size.

The boat yard is quite close to Loddon and has a dinghy, free for visitors to the CL to use. It is the quickest way to go shopping (Loddon has a 20 mph limit in the town and speed ramps AND radar) but to go anywhere else is a 30 minute car ride to Beccles and beyond (Lowestoft/Great Yarmouth)

To Find Site:
From the Norwich direction on the A146 take left turn signed for Chedgrave. (It would be advised not to approach the site via Loddon) Just past 30mph sign fork left into Rectory Lane. This brings you to a cross roads, parade of shops on the left opposite. Go straight across into Hadley Road and then turn right into Pits Lane (also marked boatyards). Gale Riverside is at the bottom of Pits Lane. (some of these roads are quite narrow so care is required)

Gale Riverside, previously a working boatyard, is a real gem of a CL which is testified by the very high level of bookings it enjoys all through its opening period.
John and Cynthia, the owners, make you feel very welcome. The CL is based on a large lawned area on the edge of the River Chet.
10 amp electrics are available to all pitches. The CL has a very clever arrangement for fresh water, each tap has a long hose so there is no need to take water containers to the taps.
There are two separate toilets, one with a shower, both maintained to an excellent standard. Chemical toilet and grey water disposal is available as is rubbish disposal, recycling is in operation and you are asked to sort rubbish as per the instructions. Mobile and TV (with Status) reception were somewhat intermittent.

This CL is in an ideal situation. If you just want to sit around on site there is plenty to see watching the river traffic. A short walk along the backs of the various boatyards, interesting in itself, brings you to the village of Loddon. It has a good range of shops and several pubs. At Loddon Staithe you can watch the visiting boats. There are various walks from the CL to explore the local area.
Further a field are Norwich, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. Beccles, a few miles from the CL, is a delightful small town and also has two supermarkets.

Great Yarmouth Racecourse C C Site---- Second report--- Fishing site
Jellicoe Road
Great Yarmouth
Norfolk
NR30 4AU

Tel: 01493 855 223

To Find Site:
From Norwich follow signs to Great Yarmouth. At second roundabout in Great Yarmouth turn left onto A149 signed for Caister. Turn right into Jellicoe road at traffic lights, immediately past Shell Garage -signed for racecourse, seafront and camping. Entrance to site is left at next roundabout. Take care on final approach to reception as you have to cross the race course through fairly narrow gaps in fence. Please note, access to campsite is restricted on race days, contact site direct for details.

Great Yarmouth Racecourse Site is an open site with little in the way trees and shrubs so I would not class this as a picturesque campsite.

All 115 pitches are on grass. Because the campsite is on a sandy base the grass tends to die in dry weather.
Pitches are of a good size but the site can seem crowded because of double staggered rows.
There are three service points and a motor van waste point.

There is one central toilet block which is kept in good condition but is not of the same quality as some of the Caravan Club sites but better than most racecourse sites I have visited.
At peak times the toilet block could be under pressure.

Non members are accepted but no tents.

Reception does sell a few things and will order newspapers.
There seems to be no shops within easy walking distance of the site but a short drive away is an ASDA and a Tesco.

This is a popular campsite with families so during the holidays there are lots of children on site. Unfortunately they are not very well catered for on site so they tend to play around the caravans. Older children do have access to part of the racecourse for football etc. There is also no dog walk.

On race days the site is closed during the races. Reception will provide you with a pass that allows exit from the site on foot. Also half price race tickets are available from reception on the day. It is quite an exciting atmosphere to be on site during the races. If you don’t want to bet but just want a closer look you can sneak a bit closer to the course!

The main reason people use the site is to sample the delights (!) of Great Yarmouth. You can walk in along the coast from the site, although this might be a bit much for younger children. If you did not want to use your own car there are also buses near the the site entrance.

You arrive at Great Yarmouth Caravan Club site through the members entrance of the racecourse, over the racetrack itself.
There is no access to the site when racing is actually taking place. Also on race days all dogs must be kept inside the van on the racecourse owners instructions.
On Race days if you are staying on site you automatically become a member for the day and gain access to the members enclosure on the inside of the track, which is a saving of over £9 each, though

The site is up to the usual Caravan Club standard, the pitches are well spaced and very large (note there are NO tents allowed). Dogs are allowed but on a lead only and Great Yarmouth insists on pooper scoops at all times.

The pitches have a mix of electric hook-ups some being the new pillar type some of the older type all 16 amps.

The toilet/shower blocks are protected by a digital lock and you are given the code on arrival. This is because the toilets are on the racecourse side of the fence and you have access to the course via gates.
The facilities are spotless as you would expect and are cleaned at least twice a day. The water and waste water are easy to see well laid out and you don#146;t get wet when you use them.

Car Boot sale on the racecourse on Sundays for folk who enjoy searching for that collectable

The site is in a fair walking distance of the town centre (1.3/4 miles) although the Pleasure Beach is 3 miles away.

There is a quot;pub" on the front quite close to the site and this belongs to the Haven static site and is quite dismal, much better to walk on to the town its-self.

Date of visit - 6th to 13th May 2001

Homely Acre is a CL (Certified Location), limited to 5 pitches for Caravan Club members only; this particular one also has an adjoining site with exactly the same facilities, for another 3 vans, and a couple of cottages and a static to rent as well.

The site is a bit over half-an-acre, with the three extra pitches and the static separated from the 5-pitch site by a hedge. The field is good and mostly level, to be honest more of a garden than a field. Each pitch has its own water and drainage point and the usual electric points, but there are no other facilities. The village lacks a shop, but the newspapers and eggs are delivered to the site, there’s a good farm shop just round the corner, and the local late-opening shop is in Foulsham, 2 miles away.

The nearest supermarket is about 7 miles away in Fakenham, a choice between Budgens and Safeways, but remember, if you spend £40 at the latter, you can get 5p a litre off petrol at the moment (May ’01).

Hindolveston is east of Fakenham and south of Holt, bringing the whole north Norfolk coast into easy reach, ideal for birdwatching breaks (and there’s a raptor watchpoint 1½ miles west of the site, with good views of -in the summer- Common and Honey Buzzards, Hobby, Sparrowhawk and Goshawk).

If you want a small quiet site, but of high quality, I strongly suggest you check out their website, using the link above, where you’ll find full details, and a price list for the cottages and static.

I would recommend this site wholeheartedly.

To find site approach from either the Cromer or Sheringham direction on the A149. In West Runton turn into road signed for the station and Aylmerton. Once over the railway bridge turn first left, the site entrance is in about 600 yards along a narrow road so care is required.

This large site is set around two sides of a hill, further divided by the West Runton golf course. All pitches are on grass and levelling blocks are required in parts. Some pitches are set out in terraces. The higher pitches up from the reception block have sea views. There are four toilet/shower blocks, there is also a large play area. When we visited the site only half the pitches were open but there was still plenty of room.

Both Cromer and Sheringham are about equal distance from the site and both are worth a visit although in my view Sheringham is the nicer of the two and is also home of the North Norfolk Railway, it also has a popular Saturday market. If you want a big supermarket there is a Safeway in Cromer, next to the railway station. A short walk from the site is West Runton station with regular trains to Norwich, it certainly takes the stress out of taking a car into the city. The train also makes a stop at Wroxham if you want to look round this central Broads village. Roys of Wroxham is always worth a visit. Blickling Hall is only about 10 miles from the site, opening times vary according to the time of year.

From A149 turn S at Weybourne church.

I used to live quite near Kelling Heath and we frequently visited for the day when friends were camping there. Having moved away from the area we have been back three times and used the site.
It is a very large site with lots of touring pitches in several fields. Pitches are generally large and marked out but not separated. There are also a lot of static caravans, but the majority of them are very nicely arranged in wooded glades and it is very different from the sites where you see serial rows of these statics all equidistant apart.
Toilet and shower facilities are generally good, though there is some variation between blocks, but I always found it rather cold (but it has been beginning or end of season when I have been there, so the weather was never too good). There is a good shop, bars, restaurant, take-away and good entertainment. They have an outside swimming pool, never open at the times we were there, and a couple of really good play areas for the kids. If you want indoor swimming it is only a few miles to "Splash" at Sheringham.
There are really nice walks around the site, the coast nearby is nice for walking, there are stables very close by and the villages of North Norfolk are generally quite attractive.
We really enjoy going there and I am sure we will be visiting again.

Images... Showing CS and toilet black---- Showing the rally field

Facilities:
9? Toilets, 6? showers, 6? handbasins (no private cubicles), 3? dishwashing sinks, cleaned regularly. Not sure of exact numbers as didn’t actually go in the gents(!), so extrapolated from what was in ladies and family sections. The family section didn’t appear to have any different facilities from the ladies to be honest.

EHU (6amp). Rally field with some ehu (6 amp and 10 amp) and meeting room. Tourist info leaflets in facilities block.

Site:
Well kept site, friendly helpful owners. Space for 5 vans and quite a few tents. No idea of cost for CS - we were on the rally field. Ground seems to drain reasonably - rained quite a lot while we were there and none of our motorhomes had any trouble getting off the site.

Would be very happy to return. Only drawback was a certain amount of road noise, but didn’t bother us too much.

Myra Sears, CLIC. June 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An update from Myra: Added September 2007.
Revisited July 2007
Site have now added a second, level, rally field which seems to drain pretty well, with electrics (marked as 16amp, but realistically seem to deliver about 6amps) and additional water points. This second field does not have a meeting room, which would have been a pain had it rained but fortunately the weather was good while we were there. Don’t know whether they are planning to add one in future.
Still the same number of facilities but we didn’t have a problem with queues when we were there (3 rallies on site at the time).
Normal fees for the CS are apparently £11 a night for a motorhome and 2 adults.
The site is down a track off Heath Road. It is about an acre, and has hook-ups at the entrance end.
There are trees all round the site, so TV reception is patchy, or non-existent.
The chemical disposal point is at the far corner of the site from the entrance, among trees.
A quiet site, within walking distance of Hickling Staithe, and the Pleasure Boat PH.
The nearest significant shopping facilities are in Stalham, where there is a Tesco, and a number of small shops. Calor refills can be obtained from Stalham Gas.
We were there on a BOCC rally (20 vans) from the 19th to 25th Aug.
A small site (50 pitches), in two small areas. The one to the right is level, and up to now has no hook-ups, although when we called in this year the electricians were due to install them.
The area to the left of the entrance slopes slightly, has some trees in it, and has hook-ups. All types of units are accepted. The toilet block, CDP, water point, and dishwashing sinks are adjacent to reception in this area to the left .
The site was once the location of the open air swimming pool. There is a (very) small river adjacent to the site, said to contain fish, believe that if you will! There is a city farm next to the site on one side, and allotments/smallholdings on the other - cockerel type alarm clocks operate.
The railway to London runs behind the houses in Martineau Lane, and a branch line the other side of the river - we have heard complaints about noise, but we did not find it particularly disturbing.
Unfortunately, unlike most C&CC sites, there is no play area here.
Buses run near the site, and if you cross the inner ring road you can join the Lakenham Way, formerly a railway line, which is a foot and cycle path into the city centre. Also across the ring road is a Fish & Chip shop, Newsagents, and food shop. A pub, which serves food, is about 150 yards from the site.
We tend to spend a few days at this site each year
This is a new site, opened in May this year. It is on a half-acre strip past a small paddock behind the house. The site has 5 hook-ups, a drinking water tap, dustbins, and a chemical disposal point with tap. On the end of the house is a WC with washbasin.
Edgefield village is a short walk from the site, and has a pub, garage/filling station/shop/post office.
Holt is about 3 miles away, and is a pleasant town with a good selection of local shops, and a Budgens supermarket. The North Norfolk Railway runs from the edge of Holt to Sheringham (for the steam buffs!). The coast is a little way to the north of Holt, and has a number of small villages along it.
An update from John. September 2009.
Yesterday we returned from our 3rd visit this year. The only change that we have seen over our succession of visits is that the hedge that shields the site from the house (or vice versa) has developed nicely, and will be ’topped’ at 6 feet.
If it ain’t broke why fix it!
Mobile phone reception: Vodafone & Orange are fine, T-Mobile has no signal, but perhaps that will change when O & T combine.
A very nice site with good easy reach for Cromer etc. Showers good and clean and also free, many other fine free points such as two fridges and a freezer also microwave, an air line for beds etc all free.
Site is compact and level with two fields, wcs and showers for all in one building also basins and washing up point, so those who are very choosy about being with others be warned but it is possibly one of the few real camping sites to be found.
but if its complete privacy you seek then best book into a static type of site.
Owners are helpful and on site and dogs are welcome.
We paid £13 a night (peak season) for two adults two children and baby, and dog so would rate it very good value. A good dog accessible beach is near but quite some climb down cliff trail. It is almost impossible with a push chair and is rather unsafe for very small children but once on beach it is very secluded.
Cromer has the added attraction of a pier that you can take dogs onto and sit and have a drink and take in the views a very nice medium to small town with all you need.
although the site is just on a quarter of a mile at most from the coast the nature of this coast line results in access being limited and so you will have to go just over a mile to gain access, that’s just a feature of this coast and cant be helped.
fishing is good on this coast although rather seasonal. hidden away in countryside this site is a real chance to get away from it all and yet within easy reach of the sights and scenes of this part of Norfolk.
we as others will be returning to this site when going to Norfolk again.
We were at this site for a Bailey rally, so we had the opportunity to look at this CL. We plan to return to Pentney in the summer to stay there.
The site is approached by a track to the right of a medieval gatehouse (currently shrouded in scaffolding and pvc sheets while renovation work takes place). Follow the signs, and you will find the site which is surrounded by Lleylandii. These give good shelter, but are quite high. I was told that the plan is to reduce the height by about a third, which will still give adequate shelter and screening.
On the east side of the site are two pillars, each with 3 hook-up points. By each pillar is a water tap. A path, with lighting at night, leads to the waste water and chemical disposal points.
In a building across the track, towards the house, there are toilets and washbasins. Howard said that, when money permits, he hopes to add showers.
There are plenty of footpaths leading from the site, and the location is quiet.
A small, compact, little, (enough descriptions for you) site BUT a peaceful site, totally surrounded by trees and Farm buildings and stables.
Water and grey waste disposal are by the farmhouse door. There is no toilet on site but there is a public one across the road which is open 24 hours for the boat users and is kept very clean. There is a pub (surprise !) next to that which has showers and toilets for the boating fraternity to use which can be used by caravanners also.
Now for the fishing !!!!!! (There’s another surprise ! (BG). Ed)
The dyke at Thurne can only be fished by people staying at the CL (or on a boat) otherwise there is a 400 yard walk to the main river. In the day time the dyke fishes very well with fish up to 5 or 6 pounds, including Tench and Carp. After the boats stop the river comes alive. Our best this time was a Bream at 6¾lb a Skimmer at 2lb (which thought it was going to fight) with good bags of Roach and Perch whilst we were there (July 2000) a few miles away two anglers caught 600lb (Yes, 600lb) of Bream in one session.
Site visted October 2002
To find site:
From Kings Lynn take A149 signed for Hunstanton. After passing sign for Castle Rising on your left watch out for right turn signed B1439 for West Newton. The site is about half a mile along this road on the left.
Non members accepted but no tents. (There is a Camping and Caravanning Club site next door)
We have been coming to this site on and off for nearly twenty years. Originally it was a forest site with no toilet blocks. Some years ago the site was expanded and upgraded. It now has 130 pitches most of which are on gravel hard standings and are of a generous size.
There are two excellent heated toilet blocks maintained to the famous CC standards. Water and waste disposal points are at the two toilet blocks and dotted around the site.
Television reception is poor so TV booster points are provided free on each pitch, although you do have to provide your own cable. The site is open from the end of March to the end of October.
Immediately around the site is easy access to forest walks around the Sandringham Estate. Also within fairly easy walking distance is Sandringham House and visitors centre where you can buy refreshments and there is also toilets and parking.
If you want to visit a traditional seaside town take the short drive to Hunstanton. Kings Lynn is well worth a visit. As well as being a useful shopping town it is also steeped in history and several hours can be taken up with walking around the old town. For food shopping there are Tesco supermarkets in both Kings Lynn and Hunstanton, the later having slightly easier access.
I do feel that the signpost "SECC" could be more prominent, it is so easy to miss it now that it is almost hidden by the shrubbery. We had been warned that the brown sign was hard to locate whereas the "CCC" sign was more in the open and so once you had passed it, it was about 50 mtrs or so to the "SECC" sign.
Many of the pitches are slightly sloping, all the ones we saw were small gauge shingle and a goodly size as per CC pitches. There was a notice which said that some pitches (grass) had been re-seeded and so groundsheets were not allowed.
Plenty of woodland walks where one can let the dogs run free.
150 mtrs along a quite hilly path There is a small shop which seems to stock most things.
The warden stocks fruit juice and Long life milk, also TV co-ax cables for the boosters in the electric pillars.TV reception at Sandringham is rubbish ( unless you are using a satellite dish) and so you have to plug into the booster sockets. If you buy from reception it’s £10-00 for 25 mtrs.
We had been forewarned and had a 10 mtr length with us which was long enough. Yeah I know it’s sad watching TV in the van but SWMBO *MUST BE OBEYED*
<grin>
There are two toilet blocks, the one that is fairly central closes 10-30 am-11-30 am for cleaning. The other which is close to the wardens office has been extended and is quite "swish" this one closes for an hour from 11-30am.
Out of the site turn right to end of the road and then turn left into Hillington and 50 mtrs or so there is a small supermarket behind a JET service station.
John the warden is a nice guy, he reset my circuit breaker in the pillar after our kettle went terminal.
Van and two adults cost us £15-00 per night, booked online via CC web-site. July and August looked heavily booked.
Err sorry but there’s no fishing there that we could see.
Weather was rubbish last weekend but we visited friends, went to the "Big House" and sat in the van and drank wine so it wasn’t all bad. <GRIN>
Toilets, Washing-up sinks, Showers, Chemical disposal point, Laundry, Parent and child room, (The facilities) Play area. All to usual club standard (added bonus last year were swallows nesting in the eaves of one of the loo blocks!) No disabled facilities.
Beautiful site with pitches amongst woodland. (wooded area 1) (wooded area 2) At the far end, which is only open at busier times, there are some more open pitches. Can get a bit muddy when it has been raining and pitches tend to be a bit threadbare later in the season (they don’t seem to site people differently to try and give pitches time to recover). Some pitches slope so may need chocks. They don’t say they have hard standing but I think there is actually one (or maybe two).
Surrounding woodland is great for walks and cycling - in one part there are several natural sculptures scattered around if you can find anyone to explain how you find them.
Nearest supermarket is Budgens, 3 miles away in Dersingham. There is an estate shop on the site boundary, which in previous years concentrated on souvenirs and didn’t stock much in the way of provisions. Last year, however it had improved immensely and was a useful source of fresh, chilled, frozen and tinned foods. Fish and chip van visits the shop two evenings a week.
We’ve been several times (last time August 2004) and have every intention of going again, even though it is blooming expensive in high season!
Caravan Club CL 5-van Site, one acre square field, quiet, secluded, level, h&c sink in adequate toilet, excellent free shower at back of house, B&B in house, electric points, £6 pn, fr £40 pw, awning £1, extra car 50p.
Proprietor Graham Polson greeted us on arrival and gave us the relevant information on the site. Apparently they ran an award-winning tea-room which suffered due to foot-and-mouth disease reducing the numbers of visitors - the tea-rooms are now closed permanently. They also have a paddock for visitors who bring their own horses but at the moment it is being used as an extra pitch. The pitches are large and all around the edge of the field leaving a large space in the middle for children to play in.
The excellent shower room is available to campers from 8am until 9pm daily. The open-all-hours toilet leaves a lot to be desired but improvements are promised. The new electric hot water supply is good but the sink is no more than adequate. There is a chemical disposal point, one water point and rubbish bins available.
If you are towing a wide unit plan your route carefully because there are some very narrow lanes in the area.
Well-next-the-sea is two miles away and has plenty of places to eat and drink. We walked out of the site and turned immediately left into Wighton village which has no shops but at the very end you will find "The Carpenters Arms" pub. When you enter this pub you are stepping back in time with Chris the hippy landlord and pictures all around the walls from the 50’s and 60’s. The taped music is all 60’s so we felt very comfortable remembering it all first time around. They have a live band at weekends and an extensive, reasonably priced, excellent menu is available after 7pm every night (book your meal for weekends).
We will stay at Shrublands the next time we visit the area.
The site entrance photo
Site full of chalets with a field at the top end for caravans etc.. The pitches were quite bumpy although you could position your van to accommodate this.
Swimming pool, bars, entertainment and food shops all on site.
There is a lovely walk along the seafront with the cliff edges to the left of you. A short walk into Hemsby finds you in a typical seaside resort. I felt that in winter Hemsby would be a ghost town as there were no houses just chalets. Walk down to the seafront to buy Cromer Crabs or play bingo or the amusements.
We had a drive into Great Yarmouth for the day. We also hired a Day boat and had a day on the Broads which personally I found very boring! Scenery all the same - river and trees!
I can recommend the Lion Pub in West Somerton for its Ploughman’s Lunches - delicious!
I didn’t really enjoy my holiday in Norfolk as I felt it was perhaps for older people than us who just wanted to relax.
Well worth a visit is the nearby Redwings Horse Sanctuary.
This is a medium sized Adults Only touring park, situated in an old, landscaped quarry about 1 mile south of North Walsham town centre. The site takes caravans, motorcaravans and trailer tents. This site is sheltered on three sides by the old walls of the quarry, now fully covered by trees, flowers etc and on the fourth by a small hill on the
The main pitches are all on level grass, all with hook-ups and all relatively close to the heated toilet block, which is small but well kept with free hot showers. The Ladies has washing cubicles. There is a dishwashing room, launderette, handwash room, covered WC disposal and disabled facilities on site. There is a small shop as part of reception which stocks basic necessities plus daily papers if ordered at time of arrival. There is also a small TV lounge for those without their own. TV reception is patchy due to being surrounded by hills but you can hire a good aerial from reception.
The site also has a small number of fully serviced "panoramic" pitches on a raised area off to the left as you enter the site. However, if you need to use the site toilet block rather than your own van’s services then this is a longer treck (about 100 metres) than the normal pitches (especially if it’s raining).
The site does not have a bar or cafe but there is a hotel almost opposite which is open to non-residents and has a large restaurant but also does bar meals as well.
North Walsham town centre is also only about 10 minutes walk away and has a number of pubs and restaurants, most of which are very good.
North Walsham is within about 10 miles of the Broads (to the south) and about 9 miles from Cromer to the North. There are also numerous small villages round about, some with very good local pubs/restaurants. Reception has details.
The local roads are also fairly quiet, flat and are ideal for those who like to get around leisurely on two wheels.
Two Mills is ideal if you want a relaxing holiday as the pace of life seems much slower in that north eastern corner of Norfolk.
I’d just like to tell you about Vauxhall Holiday Park...
In my opinion it is the best park in Norfolk.
It is situated in Yarmouth itself, about 1 mile from the main town it is on the A47 New Acle Road.
We have been going to this site for 12 years, on average twice a year.
It has everything one would want for your own comfort and entertainment. They also cater well for children.
There’s loads to do on-site.
The amenities include: 3 clubs (including bars) that have live entertinment, disco’s, talent shows.
There’s an indoor tropical swimming pool that has a childrens paddling pool attached. Sports, Games, ten pin bowing, bingo, shops.
For families with kids there’s a childrens nursery and playroom, amusement arcade etc.
The park boasts 250 electric hook-ups, no charge for awnings. There is night security for the car park. Super pitches have satelite TV connection.
The pitch fees are not cheap, but with all this entertainment, no wonder.
Standard pitch: £13.00 to £15.00 per night
Super pitch: £15.00 to £17.00 per night
The site is AA 5 star rated.
David Massam. Internet. June 2001.
Editor note.
There’s loads to do in Great Yarmouth as well. It’s a sort of mini Vagas, all the main buildings facing the sea are illuminated. There’s a fun fare just off the beach.
It has it’s quiet side as well. To the north of the pier there are sand dunes at the back of the beach. This part was quite nice, and free of crowds.
Site visited July 2001
This is a beautiful site - open grassy areas to pitch on with various areas of trees around the site. The loo blocks are good standard - well maintained and regularly cleaned/stocked. This is a lovely part of the Norfolk coast - good beaches and plenty to see and do.
Small shop in reception; fish and chip van calls on Wednesday (good) and Saturday (greasy); newspaper van on Saturday and Sunday; ice cream van on Saturday and Sunday
The big BUT is that the site is prone to strong winds which can damage awnings, tents etc. We were there for 2 weeks and it ended up feeling a bit like an endurance test. 5 nights out of 15 had winds that were sufficiently strong to cause concern - we sprouted an absolute forest of guy lines and the awning survived intact. Unfortunately on the last night, our trailer tent sustained damage to the canvas and the bed runners were bent by the wind lifting and dropping the beds. The caravan opposite wound up with banana shaped poles in their awning and the tent opposite was flooded out by water seeping up through the ground below. All in all not a good night! We might have been willing to write this off as a one-off disaster but given weather over the rest of the holiday and the fact that on a previous visit the frame tent suffered exactly the same sort of weather, we’ve decided that enough is enough and we are not going again!
BSB (Big Sites Boook) says some sites are sloping and chocks may be needed - we felt it might be more accurate to say some sites are NOT sloping - many sloped in 2 directions!!
The approach road is single track with passing places and lots of potholes. They repaired the road while we were there, but one of the storms washed most of the repairs away almost immediately.
We first visited this site about 30 years ago, when the first brick built facility blocks had just opened. We have been back since then, but this was our first visit in 10 years.
The only approach to the site is via Sandy Lane, off the A148, then into Holgate Lane. This is a narrow track with passing places so early arrival or late departure would be very unwise.
On arrival at the barrier we were directed to drive round the site roadway to a point opposite the gate. This avoids blocking the gate while you book in. When we booked in we were given the gate code, and then led to a pitch. We expected to find wheel tracks in the grass considering the amount of rain that we had recently, but the site must drain well as the pitches were all in good condition.
The two facility blocks have either been completely rebuilt since our last visit, or have had a good makeover, as they were excellent, and were very clean. Logic is used in scheduling cleaning, as only one block was closed at a time. The HSM’s and their assistants were friendly and helpful, as you would expect. There is a visit from a mobile ‘chippy’ on Wednesday & Saturday, which seemed to be well patronised, but we can’t comment on the product as we did not partake.
One of the days that we were there we had aircraft noise, the rest of the time the noise was from birds.
Directions:
The site is located at the bottom end of Burnham Thorpe at the edge of the village. If you are at the lord Nelson then go South with the pub on your right and you will see the sign for the site on the left after about a quarter of a mile.
This is a 5 pitch Caravan Club CL but they do have a couple of pitches round the back facing a meadow so you may be accepted if you are not a Caravan Club member, the best thing is to say nothing.
The CL was full so we were round the back facing the meadow. There is no electricity available where we were but otherwise it was perfect, probably better positioned than the CL. We were able to sit and watch different birds doing what they do in and above the meadow and the peace and calm was infectious.
The CL itself is a flat well cared for green square at the front of the farm with lots of room for the 5 caravans. There is water available nearby. There is a toilet and good shower available by the farm building.
There is a pub but I do not think there is a shop in Burnham Thorpe. You will get most things you need in Burnham Market about 1.5 miles away.
The CL is £7.50, which includes electricity
We paid £6.50 without electricity.
We have been going to this site for about 15 years now and still find it ideal for our needs. It is near the end of a road (Staithe Road) which leads to a small staithe on the River Ant. Along the road are a few farms, a small holiday Chalet Park and a few houses so there is little passing traffic.
The site has hardly changed over the years. It’s still a clean, pleasant, quiet and well-kept place. New owners arrived about 5/6 years ago and in 1997 opened a new toilet and shower block. This is a great improvement because before this, if you needed a shower, they were in the back garden of the house. (A charge of 30p to be put in an "honesty box" by the showers).
The site is within walking distance of the river (2-3 min.) and the village of Potter Heigham is a pleasant 20-25 min. walk along the riverbank. From here you can hire boats either by the hour or by the day. There is also Latham’s discount store which caters for all tastes. They have nearly everything a shopper could ask for - clothes, pottery and many other items. A coffee shop has been incorporated in the store in recent years so the husbands can sit in comfort. If there is a fisherman in the family they are catered for with all the latest in fishing equipment. If you want fish and chips, restaurant or pubs, you’ll find them here too.
Norwich and Great Yarmouth are about 15 miles away (in opposite directions) and there is a good selection of beaches about 5-7 miles away.
The site offers toilets, showers, and electric hook-ups. Dogs are welcome too (as long as you clean up after them and exercise them off site. The site is ideal for bird watchers, fishermen,, cyclists and walkers. There is a small shop, open only in peak season, selling essentials like bread, milk and tinned foods etc. The nearest public telephone is 1/2 mile away. Calor and Camping Gaz is stocked and Ice blocks can be frozen for a small fee.
Site fees (per night):-
Pitch Fee: Inc. car and 2 people £7.50
Awning: £1.00
Electric Hook-up: 10 amps supply £1.00
Extra Persons: Over the age of 5 years £0.75
Extra Car: £1.50
Boat: Free launching at Staithe £1.50
Further details can be obtained from the Web Site (address above)
