Please note: this site is members only.
There is no T-mobile reception here, Vodafone was OK.

A small site with grass and a few hardstanding pitches on the shore of Loch Long. All the pitches slope, usually in more than one direction - lumps of wood for use as levelling ramps and chocks are available on site. If your unit has to be 100% level, this is probably not the site for you.

The facilities are not new and therefore basic by today’s standards - no disabled facilities, no parent/toddler room, no private wash cubicles. Having said that, they are in good working order and cleaned regularly. Ladies side had 3 loos, 3 basins and 1 shower - would guess the gents was similar but don’t know.... It does have laundry and dishwashing facilities.

To approach the site, turn in past the Forestry Commission Visitor Centre at Ardgartan and follow the signs (for the Camping Club site - maybe needs updating methinks???) for some distance along a single track forestry road with passing places. About the only thing within reasonable walking distance would be the Visitor Centre, for shop etc. you would have to go back to Arrochar.

Quite a few fisherman on this site and reception stocked a minimal selection of fishing stuff. One chap had some sort of inflatable with outboard motor (highly technical description there!) which he launched from the beach to go fishing.

Would we visit again - yes, definitely. The site is right on the shore of the sea loch and there are nice walks along the loch shore and through the forest. We had a fantastic view from our hardstanding because the grass area was not in use due to waterlogging, but even if the site was full, virtually all pitches would have at least some sort of view of the loch. For me the location more than made up for the slope.

We went out early May (2009) on a Reckie Mission to look at the C.C.Carradale Bay site in Cambeltown.
I’m afraid the road leading to the Entrance to the site is not for the faint hearted.
The road has a lot of very steep hills with very sharp corners half way down them Stand-on-your-brakes type of corners really it is a terrible road...but that is my own opinion, I don’t know if anyone in the Group has been there.
Once you get to the Turn-off to go into the site, it is a Single track Road with No Passing places, if a caravan going in met one coming out I don’t know what would happen.

The views from this Site are breathtaking, but most of the pitches are on grass banks except for about 10 that are flat and facing out to sea.
There are also a number of Static vans and Cabins on site.

One other thing I did notice on my way there was:- The Forrestry Commission Site at Artgarten still had Tourers in it but they have started building Log Cabins on the site

Inverbeg Holiday Park is situated on the banks of Loch Lomond with the entrance to the site being immediately off the A82,4 miles north of Luss (Luss is the setting for Glendarroch in TV's "High Road").

The site is mainly occupied by chalets and permanent caravans with the touring area being integrated with the main site rather than relegated to an anonymous field.

The park contains a good children's play and adventure area, plus a small TV and games room (I couldn't find the TV but the games room was well stocked with toys and other games).

The touring area has hard standing, level pitches all with electric hook-up,the only drawback was the poor TV reception.

The park has a very small shop for basic items such as milk, bread and papers and most importantly cream for bites from the midges which can become troublesome at times.

The showers are free of charge and close to the camping area and are cleaned on a daily basis, perhaps not to the quality of Caravan Club sites but still adequate.

The cost in early June was £9 per night (rising to £11 per night in July,August and bank holidays) for two people.Awning, electric hook-up and extra persons were all about £2 each per night.

The site is in a walled garden. recently the end wall has been removed and several more hard-standing pitches have been added.
The facilities consist of toilets, washbasins, showers, washing-up sinks, a vegetable preparation sink, water points, chemical disposal points, laundry room, electric hook-ups, disabled toilet & shower(this may be difficult to get to with a wheelchair as the route is over gravel) and a small children’s play area outside the wall.

The shop is very limited with no bread, milk or newspapers (at least until the assistant warden starts.

There is a small bar just outside the main gate which is open from 6 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. and meals are served between 6 and 8 p.m.. The bar is closed on Mondays.

The site is at the side of a Forestry Commission area with 4 walking routes marked out and colour coded. This is the dog walk.

There was no sign of Andy’s border patrols as we made our way back south on Sunday. The weather was warm and dry all week during the day with some rain on two nights. That’s not bad for Scotland.
On the down side the midges were starting to bite as we left. Andy’s SMS (Special Midge Squadron) started early this year.

We’re ready for the next outing.

The site is 17km North of Oban at Barcaldine Walled Garden, Barcaldine Estates, Barcaldine nr Oban

About 0.5km thru village of Barcaldine, north of Oban. Near the Sealife Centre, 1km, this is a good day out for kids all ages, Marine Rescue Point for orphaned seals, lots of exotic but UK marine animals in fairly natural surroundings.

Toilets usual immaculate Camping Club standards, some hard standing pitches, some tenting areas, excellent HSM’s, busy tidying all day and very friendly towards campers.

The site is a good bit from Oban, set in a former walled garden and secluded and quiet. Nice walks and cycling in area. The ONLY CCC site with a bar, just beside entrance doing typical bar meal stuff, there was no noise evident on site, you need to book meals in advance at reception or at the bar. Visit Oban, Connel Bridge, Appin, Easdale, lots more. Seal watching trips from Oban, Ferries to Mull and Iona.

Midgies horrific! Take every repellent known to man and anything else you can think of, citronella candles, electric zappers whatever. No info on Public Transport, although Oban easily reached by rail and bus. (site is about 7km North of the CC site at North Ledaig)

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of May 2005.

Although the site is listed as Oban it is actually situated about 10 miles north of Oban, in a walled garden on the outskirts of Barcaldine Forest. The site is very attractive. Pitches are arranged either side of the access road which runs parallel with the wall, and standard grass pitches are in the centre adjacent to the shower blocks. There are two blocks, ladies and gents, plus a veg. preparation area and dishwashing. The disabled toilet and laundry are by reception and the shop.

We didn’t use the shop really, but it sells some tins, portion packs of cereal, milk, canned drinks and so on. Also Woodland Fresh! The shower blocks are up to the usual high standard of the C&CC. In addition the showers are good and powerful, and the blocks are very spacious. There is a hairdryer operated by 20 pence’s, but I didn’t try it.

There is a small bar just outside the wall operated by the club. Its very nice and friendly with children welcome up till 8. In fact they allowed our children in after 8 to eat as we arrived quite late after a long drive. They serve food which, whilst nothing exceptional, is good quality, and a welcome break from cooking.

We were pitched in the centre, this are was not marked out, and it was a little bit awkward getting the car in and out. We stayed on the bank holiday weekend and the site was very full. The weather had been very wet rendering some of the grass area unusable, but even taking that into account we did feel that we had been crammed in a bit, and we definitely weren’t 6m from our neighbours. A minor niggle, but a niggle just the same.

There is a lot to do in the area, we barely scratched the surface. Its a lovely part of the world and a high quality site.

Midges were an issue, even this early in the year - go prepared!

Steam train --- Reception --- The entrance --- Shower blocks --- Playground --- ’The wall’

The site is within a walled garden, with some hard standing, and the rest grass. (When we were there the grass was "squelchy")

The facilities blocks were good, with the washing-up sinks are under cover. The laundry room is located at the end of the reception/shop block. The shop has a range of basic foodstuffs, plus a good supply of midge repellant, and nets. Outside the gate is the bar, open Tues to Sun, with meals available from 5.30 - 9pm. The catering can be highly recommended. Behind the bar are a children’s play area, and also some overnight parking.

There are several marked walks from the woods adjacent to the site, accessible from a gateway in the wall.

Oban is about 13 miles to the south, and if you drive north you come to Fort William, and the Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig (which is why we were at this site in the midge seaon!)

TV reception was fair (Torosay transmitter)
Mobile phone reception poor (Orange)

114 pitches. NO TOILET BLOCK

A varied site divided into different areas, each of which has a different character. The first area is a grassy area with a mix of hardstanding and grass pitches. Raised slightly this is the driest part of the site and is somewhat sheltered by the surrounding woods. Next you go down the hill a bit to the "walled" area. Mostly hardstanding with a few grass pitches. The pitches at the far end can be prone to flooding but this area is very sheltered. The final and busiest area is the Lochside area. This area again has hardstanding and a few grass pitches right on the lochside. Can be exposed as the wind comes straight up the Loch.

Fishing is available with the River Croe running down one side of the site and Loch Long a sea loch around the lochside area. I tried spinning for the large Mackerel around the river mouth but with no luck. --- They were Mackerel, honest (VBG). Not much luck in the loch either but those with access to a boat caught a few !!

Walking, relaxing, cycling, bird watching, eating and drinking are the other main activities, though there is plenty of potential to use the site as a base to tour the West of Scotland.

The wardens on the site are friendly enough but others reported they could be a bit stand offish. They were fine with me and the others were mostly breaking so many rules (dogs off leads, speeding, etc) that this was hardly surprising. As I say I found the wardens friendly, helpful and they provided excellent service to me.

I enjoyed my stay here in the week before easter but in the summer the West Coast midge is out in force here. I should know, I went to school 20 miles down the road in Helensburgh and my wife grew up in Glen Douglas, that is behind the hill over the water from the site.

114 pitches.
Small boats can be launched from site

We stayed at the Arrochar site for just 1 night as a stopover (Friday). It is a minimal facility site and was only about half full athough all the loch sode pitches where taken.

The approach road into the site once leaving the main road is VERY bumpy and full of pot holes but you can avoid most of the big ones. Apparently the land owners won’t allow the club to upgrade the road!!

All but a few pitches are hard standing and the few that weren’t were not being used.
Site was divided into several areas, the leaflet is out in the MH ATM but from memory it was lochside, part walled garden, and more open with only trees around the very edge (the one we opted for hoping to escape the wrath of the midge but failing). There is a stream running nearby which was quite noisy due to the rain.

There are lovely views down the loch where seats and a couple of picnic tables were placed on the mown grass in front of the pitches, but only from the lochside area.

The weather was reasonable when we arrived but later rained and the midges came out in force so you would need the usual repellants etc.

Lady warden was very friendly didn’t meet the other half so can’t comment.

For us the site was OK for 1 night but wouldnt want to stay much longer. In fairness this could be due to the rain, the midges and the fact that we were on our way home so our views could be clouded to say the least.

Follow this for approx three quarters of a mile, Past the Hawthorn Restaurant sign and the site is on the left. It’s a fairly narrow entrance.

10 Touring caravan pitches 20 Camping pitches in a fairly large field

This is one of the most peaceful sites we have been to. There is plenty of space between the vans. There are two small toilet blocks which are adequate and spotlessly clean.
The views across the bay are to die for and the sunsets are spectacular.

It’s in a central position for visiting Oban or north to Fort William or just for exploring the area.

The Hawthorn Restaurant, which is in easy walking distance is run by a very pleasant couple and the food is excellent and reasonably priced.

129 Tourist van/tent pitches

Fine, fine site! Member of the "Best of British" and highly commended by the Scottish Tourist Board. The site is around 13 acres of mixed pitches from grass with no hook-ups to completely serviced hard standing pitches.
All the pitches are well laid out and some are quite secluded.

The staff are very friendly and are always happy to help. The park houses a games room with two pool tables and a TV along with all the usual suspects!
The park also has a leisure suite, consisting of a jacuzzi, a sauna and a sun bed, although this is not free of charge.

The park also sites caravans for the season and also provides winter storage for your caravan.

Site fees are around £8.50 per night and £2.50 for a hook up per night. The showers are free and the toilet block is very clean and well maintained.
There is also the usual laundry and washing areas along with well distributed water and waste point all over the park.

Situated minutes from Balloch and Alexdria. Alexandria is home to the Loch Lomond factory outlet, where the other ’alf can always pick up a bargain at your expense! Loch Lomond is also very close by, accessible either from Balloch or a short drive up the A82. Boat trip out onto Loch Lomond are available just before the bridge in Balloch.

10 minutes drive north on the A82 you will find Luss the home of "Glendarich" from the TV soap "Take the High Road" an extremely scenic little village. You may even see "Davie Sneddon" patrolling the village!!
