Web site: www.wellington-country-park.co.uk..

Site visited: May 2000 & March 2001

February 2010.
It has been brought to our attention that this site no longer offers fishing.
It is still a fishing venue, but it is syndicated.

Price £13 per night, Monday-Thursday price £7.50 pn. electricity £1.75 pn.
Awning/dogs free. Prices are for 2 adults/2 children with free admission to park and free fishing (1 rod).

Site facilities:
Attractively situated on level ground in the woodland of the 350 acres of Wellington Country Park. 72 pitches in clearings in the woods for all units, with 42 electric hook-ups.
There is one (unheated) toilet block in the centre of the site which houses 4 flush toilets, 3 showers with plenty of hot water. There are sinks and a hair dryer, which takes a coin. The ladies’ side has similar toilet facilities.
The facilities at the site are inadequate for the numbers of people using them and need modernising. It can also be a long hike to get to them from the far corners of the site. There are washing-up sinks outside but under cover and a laundry room with washing, drying and ironing facilities.
There are two Elsan disposal points and two rubbish disposal skips but water taps are plentiful.

The shop has very limited supplies and very limited opening times, we saw it open once in 3 days. Make sure you have food and gas as you will be some distance away from obtaining supplies.
The wardens were seldom seen during the weekend and their caravans/office were in sight of our pitch.

There are two separate rally areas available for booking. No cycling is allowed in the site or in the park.

In the centre of the park there is a lake surrounded by woods and meadows where campers can fish free. It is stocked with chub, tench, perch, roach and pike (fishing matches can be arranged).
The park has an animal farm, deer park, way-marked nature trails, excellent adventure playground, boating, miniature railway, crazy golf, cafeteria, gift and coffee shop. Stratfield Saye House (home of the Dukes of Wellington) is three miles away with reduced admission for campers.

The camp was very popular with the motorhome fraternity while we were there, although tents and tourers were present. Some of the pitches may be (PHOTO) difficult to manoeuvre a large caravan into. We had to manhandle our small caravan into position as the access road was very narrow at that
point. There is a direct path through to the lake area from the caravan site. A key for access to the site is provided (£10 deposit) on booking in at the park reception.

The distance from the camp pitches to the main road outside the park is about three-quarters of a mile and unlit all the way. You will need to take the car to go to a pub or restaurant and must be back by curfew time of 10.30pm, or you must leave your car outside the gates.

It was ok and we enjoyed the peacefulness of the surroundings but won’t be returning. The site would be great for a family with young teenagers and for keen fishermen.

Bernard and Diane Wing. CLIC. May 2000

Added March 2001.
Open: beginning of March to end of October.
Facilities: 60 pitches; 42 10a hook-ups; 6 hot showers.

2 acre rough grass field with a public footpath running through it. No facilities, just CDP and fresh water. There is a public children’s playground adjacent to the site. A pub within walking distance but I have a feeling that they don’t servefood in the evenings.

This isn’t a site I would choose to spend a week’s holiday at, but for an overnight stop it was fine and I would be quite happy to return.
