Abbey Wood is in a very picturesque spot though you would never guess as you arrive. The site is not flat, though it is well drained.

The site has flat areas for tents, but be warned, it is used by a lot of young travellers from the continent who use the site as a stop-over

You can walk to the railway station at Abbey Wood 3/4 mile and then connect with the tube at Waterloo. Tickets are available from the site office. Abbey Wood is situated in the south east of London and it is not a pleasant drive to get into the city.

This site is open all year for Caravans, Motor Caravans and Tents. Non members also welcome. Advance booking advised Bank Holidays and July/August. 360 pitches.

The Abbey Wood site is set in 9 acres of sloping woodland surrounded by suburban London. No doubt when the leaves on the very mature trees are out you would not be able to see so much of the surrounding houses. Despite the closeness or suburbia the site is reasonably quiet.

Our visit was in late March. Most of the site is on grass and most pitches are on a gentle slope, so levelling blocks are advised.

There are some hardstanding areas but these can only be used by motor caravans and caravans without awnings.

Tents have their own area, which looked reasonably level.

There are three toilet blocks, although during our visit only one was open because the site was no where near full. Whilst kept perfectly clean the toilet blocks are not of the most modern design and perhaps not up the usual high standard normally found on a Club site. The site office does not sell milk or newspapers but there are local shops only ten minutes walk away.
Television reception is quite poor and there is no signal booster on this site.

The main attraction of this site is the excellent public transport links to central London and other points of interest. The station is right by the local shops. The Travel Cards are the best value but the station staff will be more than happy to advise on the best ticket to buy. The Dome and Greenwich are only a few stops along the line from Abbey Wood. Please note there are no car parking facilities at the Dome, except for Orange Badge holders. Central London is a 30 minutes trip into Charing Cross. Also nearby is the Thames Barrier, which has a visitor centre and parking.

If you want to shop until you drop and you don’t want to go into London, the Lakeside shopping centre is on the north side of the Dartford Crossing. Then excellent state of the art Bluewater Centre is now open and this is just a 15 minutes drive from the site.

Abbey Wood is quite easy to find. From the M25 take the A2 towards London. Leave the A2 at the Danson Interchange and follow the international camping signs.

Abbey Wood Caravan Club Site is a Caravan Club Golden Jubilee Site and feels positively rural when you reach this gently sloping verdant site. Its mature tree screening and spacious grounds making it a secure site. Good railway connections are within walking distance of the caravan site and will get you into Central London in just 35 minutes. Alternatively, nearby Greenwich offers its own blend of fascinating attractions, including the famous observatory. There are also some good walks just outside the site in Bostal Woods and Lesnes Abbey Woods where you can see the remains of the Lesnes Abbey. At the Woolwich Arsenal is the Royal Artillery Museum recording 300 plus years of the Military at Woolwich, the splendid Artillery Barracks on the south side of Woolwich will host the shooting and archery during the London Olympics.

Also easily reached is the newly opened DLR (Docklands Light Railway) at the Woolwich Arsenal which has an interchange with the Southeastern Railway line from Abbey Wood and this will take you to Stratford for the Olympic Park, London City Airport, The Excel Exhibition Centre, Canary Wharf and The City of London.

Another good link at the Woolwich Arsenal is the Thames Clipper service from the Woolwich Arsenal Pier which takes you into central London via the 02, Greenwich, Canary Wharf, The Tower of London, London Bridge, Tate Modern, the Embankment (for Trafalgar Square) and the London Eye. At present this only runs all day at weekends and bank holidays. Weekdays it has a morning service until 9:20 am and an evening service from 5:45 pm.

There are Pay and Display car parks at the Woolwich Arsenal in Warren Lane as well as at the 02 which also has special car parks when events are on at the 02 arena.

River cruises operate from nearby Abbey Wood Caravan Club Site between Greenwich, Tower Bridge, Westminster, Kew, Richmond and Hampton Court. Open all year, this is a busy caravan site and is very popular with European visitors during the summer months. There are good reasons to visit Abbey Wood throughout the year though. The Christmas Lights, shopping at the January Sales, the London Marathon, Excel Centre and the Chelsea Flower show can all be enjoyed from this scenic, yet well placed, site.

The site has 210 pitches with approximately 75 hardstanding. The site is open to non members as well as tent campers. It is set within gently sloping woodland in the south east corner of London and some of the pitches will require levelling blocks. The site has undergone major renovations since the year 2000 and now boasts three first class toilet blocks. a new reception area with a small shop for campers essentials and an information room. TV reception is good and the site also has WiFi. There are many shops within a few minutes walk from the site and major supermarkets are a short drive away.

Security is excellent with a high electrified fence (for signals) running around the perimeter and the main gates are locked at night with a key pad pedestrian gate for late access – there is a late arrivals area where cars can be left until the morning.

Please note this report is as a result of a visit to the site, we did not stay.

This site is open all year for Caravans, Motor Caravans and Tents. Non members also welcome. Advance booking advised at all times. 150 pitches.

The site is situated almost directly under the Crystal Palace Communication Mast.

Most pitches for caravans and motor caravans are on chipped hardstandings. These pitches are set in small groups and are level. Tents have their own area on grass. There is one toilet block which is the standard CC type.

This site is more like the modern sites built by the CC, if this is important you may prefer this site to Abbey Wood. However you will have a more difficult journey to get to it and you will find it more noisy.

Because the site is further into London than Abbey Wood access is more torturous and it can be slow going on weekdays.

Leave the A2, direction Blackwall Tunnel, onto the South Circular A205. Exit A205 onto A212 signed Crystal Palace. The site entrance is between two mini roundabouts.

I have stayed at both sites and without any doubt the Pickets lock is better. (Alan also reported on Abbey Wood) We visit this site three times a year. It’s not cheap! pitch , awning and electric recently cost me £15 per night.

The shower block is as clean as you would expect at home, as there is a key system.

The site is almost manicured and well drained and flat. I was there two weeks ago when we had 44mm of rain in three hours and you could not tell in the morning, no puddles no mud just fresh grass.

The site is fronted by a leisure centre ...very , very quiet and surrounded on three sides with a golf course.

Half a mile by road is Pickets lock on which you can cycle or walk either towards London or Waltham Abbey.. about 17 miles of flat towpath.

There are restaurants , one is a pizza place on the site in front of the leisure centre and there is a ten screen cinema also. (Editors note: Handy if it’s raining !!)

A bus visits the site and will take you to Tottenham Hale where you get on the tube, (a pass can be purchased from the site office). There is only rudimentary food available in the shop but there is Edmonton Shopping Centre within two miles of the gate.

If you go there remember us to Janet and Jim tell them we are the Sheffielders with the blue Toyota Spacecruiser.
The warden is a northerner, chesterfield way I think.
