Mrs Gwyneth Jones Hall Manager

A lovely little thirty unit site in the grounds of Capesthorne Hall. It is being developed by the owners of the Hall. Warden is friendly. There is free access to the gardens, park lakes and chapel on the estate and reduced admission to Capesthorne Hall itself. A good site if you are a dog owner as there are walks aplenty from the site. Toilet and shower facilities are in converted outbuildings and are clean but a bit elderly. [They could have been upgraded as my last visit was nearly three years ago] All pitches are grass kept closely cut on a meadow alongside the Hall. Convenient for Jodrell Bank, Manchester Airport etc.

Directions: Midway between Wilmslow and Congleton on the A34. Simply follow the signs for Capesthorne Hall. You drive up the drive from the lodge house and the site is on the right of the hall.

Editor’s note: 2000 prices are
Car, Caravan, Electric hook-up, awning & 2 people...£11.00 night
As above plus ’additional people’. They don’t say how many, but mention children....£13 night

An update on Capesthorne Hall (Easter 2005)

Changes to main report.

No warden on site. Site appears to be being run down.

’Caravan office’ Mon. - Fri. 10 - 4. This has the following drawbacks out of hours:-
No clue as to which pitches are free or pre-booked...
No tractor assisted pitching. (Ground is iffy wet, chelsea tractor required)...
No tokens for laundry...
Towcars only allowed on site to drop off and pick up van (unless disabled)...
Toilets are very old but clean and recently painted...

No fishing on site - fishing rights sold off to an angling club !

The surly estate manageress, who has no people or managerial skills and is completely lacking in caravan awareness does check up regularly...

Mrs Gwyneth Jones. Hall Manager

I visited this site in August 2005 and found a lovely site ... set in quiet picturesque Cheshire countryside.
Level pitches and gravel roads around site making pitching very easy, even in wet weather.
Toilets & showers housed in stable buildings, clean and freshly painted.

Plenty of walks in and around gardens (free admission to caravanners).
Lots of good pubs, serving food, found locally.

Office open from 10.00 to 4.00 am Mon - Friday, 12.00 to 4.00 on Sundays.
There is an information kiosk and noticeboard on site, arrival instructions are clearly displayed for both pre-booked and casual arrivals.

Site was busy and would recommend prebooking

Extensively refurbished a couple of seasons ago this is a gem of a site.

Ideally situated close to Chester and the park and ride and also only half a mile from Cheshire Oaks factory outlet village it is a shopper's paradise.

There are three pubs serving food within walking distance.
Pitching is easy and level on either grass or gravel. (photo) Facilities are exactly what one expects from a club site.

This site gets busy in season and school holidays so needs booking well ahead.
The twelve o’clock rule is in force often as well.

There is much to see and visit in the area or just relax on site.

We have stayed throughout the year at this lovely site, it is close by the shopping outlet, it is 10 minutes from the zoo.
There is the hungry horse pub, which is exactly what the potions could do, Fill a very hungry horse. As an adult, I am always very well fed from this establishment.

The facilities are excellent, the staff very friendly, prior to Caravanning, we pitched a tent here and they even cut a pitch for us, staying here was one of the reasons why we decided to upgrade to a caravan, this enabled us to enjoy this lovely site even if the weather is poor.

Delamere C & CC site
Station Road
Delamere
Northwich
Cheshire
CW8 2HZ

Tel: 01606 889 231

Date of visit: Easter 2008

This site is a Camping and caravanning club site. It is fairly new having been laid about two years ago on open ground bordering Delamere forest. It needs time to mature but will be excellent in due course.
A lot of trees have been planted and these need time to grow. At present it is in my opinion a bit open to the road. This is a B road but traffic moves fairly quickly along it. The site itself has pitches which are roughly split evenly between grass and hard standing. The roads and the hard standings are all natural stone rather than tarmac. Tents and caravans are intermingled which we have not seen before as CC sites tend to have a separate camping area.

All the facilities are situated in the reception building at the entrance to the site. This means that it can be a fair walk to the showers if you are pitched on the back of the site. These facilities are excellent as one expects.
As well as reception there is a parent and baby room, laundry and elsan disposal. In the centre of the site are fresh water and waste areas. The site has its own access to the woods and forest behind.

On arrival we were quickly checked in and then shown to our pitch by one of the wardens who also guided us on. There was no choosing your pitch however. We were shown to the pitch allocated to us on the system. As it happened I liked it but I am not sure what would happen if I preferred a different one.

There are additional water and waste facilities at the facility block. The only toilet disposal was at the main block which meant a long walk!

Those who are keen walkers and cyclists will really enjoy the area and will rarely need to venture off site. Just down the road from the station is ‘Go Ape’ which is effectively a huge adventure course. We did not visit although we imagine those with children will love it!

Whilst I thought this was a spotlessly clean and well managed site I did not feel it had any ‘atmosphere’. Perhaps this is because it is new and has not had the chance to develop or mature. Certainly the location is as good as I have seen and the views tremendous.

I had been a little concerned about reports of theft and hooligans on this site from a couple of forums. However I am happy to report that despite being full throughout our visit we experienced no problems at all.

The site is well situated for visiting Chester as it is but a 200 yard walk to Delamere station where it is cheaper to travel in on the train than find somewhere to park in town. Also close by was what was formerly Harrington’s Leisure Dealership. It is now a ‘Discover’ outlet and all I can say is that prices have increased accordingly since I was last there. I am not convinced these new national "chains" give the same service as the old family established businesses!

Mr. B. Mitchell

This Caravan Club CL Site is four miles from Chester. It is a very convenient CL should the main Chester site be full as it has shower and toilet facilities.

There are two distinct areas. One is a lawn garden area to the front of the farmhouse and the other is more gravel at the side of the farmhouse. For those that prefer the luxuries as opposed to the basic field this is a very good CL as it has electric hook ups shower and toilet. These latter are fairly old but clean none the less. It is a while since I was there but I recollect there was a 20p meter for a shower.

The site is sheltered so on a sunny day gets very warm. We have had some good weekends here.

As with all good CL sites it needs booking as it has always been full on my visits.

The village is quite rural. Chester is one of our favourite weekend haunts so we like to have a few different sites to ensure we can get on.

We stayed at this site for two nights in July 2011.
I was impressed with the cleanliness of the site and how it was kept well manicured. However the main field we stayed on did leave a lot to be desired as far as space was concerned. The layout seemed to have caravans laid out very close together. We stayed on pitch number nine which was on a slop. If we had wanted to put up the awning it would not of been possible to do. and it would have left no space for the next pitch to park their car which HAD to be on your offside of the caravan.
The plus side for the site was that the toilet block was very clean and well maintained at all times. The little reception area had a good sample of supplies if needed. A fish and chip van was open on a Friday evening (only).

We could not see a bus stop near to the site so using the car for us was a must. It is an easy trip down to Chester where a park and ride system saves you a lot of work(and parking fees).

The road that the site is on is a very very busy one during the mornings and evenings and the entrance to the site is partially blocked when coming out by shrubs so extra care has to be taken to get out. A little bit more worrying for the area was that there are lots of road signs telling you how many accidents and deaths there had been on certain roads which made me wonder what was going on around them.

If you need any spares for the caravan then there is a Discover caravan centre down the road, turn right out of the site then to the first set of lights, turn right then left at next set of lights and stay on that road for a few miles and it is on your left, it too had a bad exit road with the centre being on a double bend.

Overall the site is very nice but I found that one of the male wardens very sharp when talking to people, he seemed to be ordering you to do things, still each to their own I suppose. Personally we will not be returning because of the closeness of the pitches and the lack of things for kids to do on the site, that is apart from them looking at the owls as long as they are supervised (the kids). Views from the main site are very restricted by the high hedges but in the rally field they were good.

Charges per night - Camping - Adults £8 per night, children £3 (under 3yrs free) ehu - £3, dogs £1 each
Caravan/motorhome charges - contact site for details

After hearing other people sing the praises of this camping and caravan site I was recently looking forward to meeting up there with some camping friends - it was their choice of site and my first time there but to be honest it was also my last as I disliked the place intensely.

The camping field is sloping with a central gravel roadway, though the 'gravel' seems to be more like ground up hardcore and builder's rubble as there were small bits of bricks and stones lying all over the place. The pitches, although long, aren't very wide, and many of them are very uneven. All bar two were occupied and there wasn't much space in between each unit - I couldn't get onto the pitch I'd originally booked as there was a large tent on the next pitch which encroached halfway onto mine, making putting up my own tent impossible so I had to change to another pitch. This was so uneven that the front of the tent wouldn't peg down properly, I had to put wood blocks under my kitchen stand and larder unit and my bed sloped sideways, giving me a very uncomfortable night's sleep and dreadful backache.

There are two fresh water taps on the camping field and these are located at the back of the pitches along the hedge separating the field from the caravan section, and with tents in front of them even using the site map provided by reception they aren't easy to find. The only dustbins are situated at the very top end of the field so quite a long walk for anyone camping at the bottom. The facilities block is situated over on the caravan section - the toilets and showers have underfloor heating and were spotlessly clean, also there was music playing quietly whenever I went in there; I didn't use the pot washing or laundry facilities so I can't comment on those. There's a children's play area close to the facilities block, also a large play barn and a soft play area in the nearby cafe/clubhouse but these are all more suited to younger kids, with nothing for older ones.

Unfortunately, what most people don't tell you is that the site is right under the flight path for Liverpool airport and from 6am for over three hours the planes were coming over literally one after the other - under normal circumstances I don't mind a few planes but this was more than just a few and the constant drone so early in the morning was very annoying. I was also wakened by plane noise a couple of times during the night, which wasn't funny.

On the plus side there's a dog walk between the camping field and the caravan section with a small enclosed field at the end where dogs can be let off the lead, and on the wall outside the laundry room is a bike/dog shower set at a comfortable 30 degrees. The tops of the hook-up posts are all lit up at night which helps to light the way on any night time trips to the loos, and when pitching the tent the pegs all went in easily. There's very little to see or do in the immediate area - Frodsham town centre and Morrisons are just a couple of miles away and Delamere Forest and Go Ape are only a ten minute drive down the road but anywhere else is quite a distance away. In the site grounds there are several single storey buildings separated into different units selling antiques, collectables and gifts, and shabby chic furniture, there's also a book shop, sweet shop, micro brewery, bistro and a lovely Yankee Candle shop.

When I originally made my booking I really only wanted to stay for two nights, Saturday and Sunday, but the site 'rules' meant I had to also book the Friday - that was no use to me as with working in the evenings I can't get away until Saturday morning, so it meant I had to pay for a night I couldn't use, and at £13 per night it worked out expensive. On checking in at reception on arrival I was given a swipe card for access to the toilets and showers, I had to pay a £10 deposit for this which was refunded at the end of my stay. Unfortunately I was only given £5 back which I didn't realise until I got home and by then it was too late to do anything about it. With hindsight I should have checked before I left reception but I just wanted to get away.

No doubt many people, especially those with kids, will think this is a great site but unfortunately I don't. I hated every minute of my stay there and if I hadn't already paid for the one night I couldn't use I would have left after the first night there. Looking round it seems that the place is still relatively new and is either still being developed or is being extended - I think with a few tweaks here and there it could be a really nice site but unfortunately it's not for me. Would I go back? Definitely not!

Lamb Cottage is an Exclusively for Adults Touring Park, located about 12 miles from the historic City of Chester, 3½ miles from Northwich, ½ mile from the village of Whitegate and near to the Delemere Forest.

The site consists of 60 touring pitches on level ground, about half set aside for seasonal use, plus a small number of residential and static caravans.
The touring pitches are located over 150 metres off the public road. No traffic noise was heard due to the position of residential and static caravans.

In 2001 new resident owners Mike and Lynn Howard started a refurbishment programme of what was once a run down site creating some well spaced individual all weather serviced pitches for tourers, with a lawned area to the side of each pitch, with their own 16amp electricity socket, fresh and waste water connections.

A new toilet block is to be constructed for the 2004 season, to bring it up to the standard of the extensive work already completed.

There is a small dog walk on site with a much larger Forestry Commission Woodland walk off site across the public road.

Our 10 days stay in August 2003 through the Bank Holiday period when every pitch was occupied was quiet and peaceful.

The sites location is ideal for visitors to visit, within a 30 mins drive, to a large number of attractions. I.e. Chester Zoo, Jodrell Bank Observatory, Tatton Park House and Gardens, The Salt museum and Anderton Canal Boat Lift near Northwich and much more.

This site is in the village of Kelsall, six miles East of Chester just off the A54. Northwood Hall is a small and charming 30-pitch site in this small village. Access is very easy. The site has a slope over most of it so blocks and chocks are necessary! That said, pitching is easy on either grass or some rather small hard standings. All the grass was well mowed on my visit and the whole site is set among mature oak and chestnut trees below the Hall. Toilet and shower facilities are clean and there is a laundry room as well. Other facilities include hook -ups and a children’s play area set away from the caravans. Ball games are not permitted around the vans. There is a recreation field for this immediately adjacent to the site. A road runs around the site. The top of the site is close to the main A54 but traffic noise is not obtrusive.

We found this to be a very pleasant site and though our visit was in March there were a few visitors already. Seasonal bookings are taken so I am not sure what pitches are left for touring visitors.

There is a pub 500 yards away serving food and two more in the village. Paper shop and butcher are about a mile away. Site is convenient for Chester, Delamere Forest and all the surrounding Cheshire attractions.

Directions:

From North
Leave M56 at junction 10 onto A49. In 8 miles at the traffic light junction with A556 turn right. In three miles this becomes the A54. In 2 miles turn left at the second Kelsall sign. In half mile turn left adjacent to the public house. The site is 500 yards on the right.

From South
Leave M6 at junction 19 onto A556 towards Northwich. This brings you to traffic lights above after approx 10 miles. Then as above.

This is a CL I’ve used which is 10 minutes walk from the ‘park and ride’ into the Chester city.
It’s ideal for a weekend.
The field is close mown grass and is surrounded by trees which make it quite private, but there are no hard standings.
There are electric hook ups (10amps) and a new purpose built toilet and shower block.
Part of the farm is given over to a small riding school, but this doesn’t interfere with the CL in any way.
The River Dee is within walking distance for those interested in coarse fishing.
The location is very quiet the field being well off the main road. The only drawback is a long rough track into the field which I was told was to be repaired.

Futher afield there is the North Wales coast, the Wirrel Peninsula, Port Sunlight (what a delightful name. Editor) and the Canal Museum at Ellesmere Port. These places are all within easy driving distance. In fact there’s enough to keep you busy in this area for a week or more.

I have just returned from four days at this CL near Chester recommended last week. The site is approx. an acre of lawned grass.

Although the weather was very wet when I arrived the grass was not slippery or at all muddy. It appears to be a well drained site.

There are six electric points.

There are separate toilets and showers for ladies and gents. All are kept extremely clean. The farm appears to be mainly stabling and pasture for horses. There is quite a bit of activity with exercising etc.
The drive to the farm is a long gravel track which is fairly smooth but requires some care. Other than that access is very easy from north or south.

Very convenient for Chester. The retail park on Sealand road is a 5 minute drive. For visiting the city itself the park and drive is a ten minute walk [2 minute drive] Cheshire Oaks is 15 minutes. There is a golf driving range 2 miles away. The river Dee is at the end of the cul-de-sac road that the site is situated on less than half a mile.

The nearest paper shop is at the garage a couple of miles away. All in all a well kept little CL that I will definitely return to.

As this is a Caravan Club CL do not forget you need to be a member to visit

Directions:
From South - Follow Chester south by-pass or A548 towards Birkenhead. About 1 mile after the retail park and just after the park and ride signs turn left on the right hand bend into Ferry Lane [it is a cul-de-sac sp Saltney via footbridge] In half a mile just after the residential park turn right into farm road at the yellow road grit box. Turn right into site just past the cattle grid.
There was no problem in leaving whenever I liked on the Monday.

From North - Stay on M56 to the end. Follow signs to North Wales and Queensferry on A5117. At traffic lights bear left onto A 550 [sp Queensferry] In approx 1 mile over the bridge just past RAF Sealand turn left onto A548 [sp Chester] In 3 miles immediately after the 40 limit signs turn right on the sharp left hand bend into Ferry Lane. Then as above. This is a bit further round but is much quicker than towing through Chester.

BEWARE! Do not miss the right turn into the farm track. it is a dead end and if there are cars on the road turning round will be very interesting! If you pass some cottages after the static site you have gone too far!

This is a CCC certificated site, so members only.
small garden-type site with fresh water, CDP and EHU. Well kept by friendly owner.

Level site with Netlon under part (maybe all) of the turf.

Situated off a minor road which carries quite a bit of traffic during the day, so not totally quiet, but not a major problem.

Would happily revisit
£6.50 a night for motorhome, 2 adults and EHU

Our motorhome is 23½ft - if your van is longer it might be interesting turning into/out of the site.

October 2007:

Myra sent in an up-date on this site.

Well, we did revisit, in August 2007. Site unchanged, still pleasant, clean and tidy. Owners still friendly and obliging. Recycling bins as well as standard rubbish. EHU is 16 amp.

The minor road is still busy during the day but calms down at night, although the site is useful as a stopover when travelling the M6 you don’t hear the motorway.

This site takes trailer tents, caravans and motorhomes but not tents. You need your own facilities though - no toilet or shower.

This year it was £7.50 for 2 adults and MH.
