Site visited April 2000. Updated October 2000

A view of the entrance

Basically a site for static caravans with a rather bumpy field for caravans/tents. The pitches were too close for comfort in my opinion.
Swimming pool, bar’s, supermarket, take-a-way food shops and entertainment on site. Plenty of walks along the seafront and a nearby market provides bargains on a Sundays

Further down into Cleethorpes centre a market is also held under cover on a Sunday.

We popped along for a visit last weekend and they have built a new touring site which looks ok. The bit we saw though isnt much good for tents as each pitch has a block paved hardstanding. If tents have to go on the field next to the seafront car park, we wouldn’t fancy it as it is too exposed and has no privacy from the car park at all.
I thought you would be interested as you had sent info to the clicreports website.

Since our last visit the site has changed dramatically - the once bumpy field is no longer used for tourers as static caravans have been placed there. The touring part of Thorpe Park is now a lovely flat area, each plot is block paved for the car and caravan with ample room for the awning to be put on grass. It has been well landscaped and although we haven’t stayed here since it has been upgraded it looks lovely from our drive around it.
Some plots have their own water and waste drains although you pay a little more for these. I still feel it is expensive to camp there but it is very close to Pleasure Island so that is maybe why. As before there is a swimming pool, bar etc as any good holiday village would have.
I am very impressed at the way the site has been planned and changed from a once bumpy field to the new site!

Editor note:
What follows is an account of the facilities on offer at Thorpe Park Holiday Centre.
Shauna contacted me in response to my note about the above report being old and in need of up-dating.
She kindly offered to bring the report up to date as far as the things on offer for visitors.
Shauna is 14, so her views of what are important are somewhat different from ’us old uns’ (wink)

Shauna writes:
"They have horse riding, fishing, crazy golf, 9 hole golf, fairground (small and only for little kids but good), bike hiring, entertainment, blading, Bradleys den adventure park, boucy castles, kids clubs including paws for ages 1-4 , t-co for ages 12-16+ and Bradleys funtime with ages 5-11 also your very own family park rangers".

I then asked Shauna if she could list the amenities for older folk....
"The best thing they have for older people is fishing and golf as well as bingo also a club called Seymours where children are not allowed in (this includes cabrets, bingo, etc..)"

Date Visited: 03/08/09 to 6/08/09

Unit: Pennine folding camper.

Arrived to a friendly reception and told to find a pitch in the touring area and then let the warden know which one we had chosen. The weather had been very wet the week before so our choice of pitch was limited to the few that were not under an inch of water. We found a reasonably dry one and warned by the tent next to us that the day before it had been under water. They had resorted to filling bin liners with sand to try and keep the water out of their tent. The Grass touring pitches certainly need some serious work on the drainage. The touring feild is now quite flat.

We pitched and returned to the warden for keys to the shower block (£10 deposit for each key) and one for the disabled/family block as we had taken our young grand children with us. The shower block closest to us (53.536527 degs., 0.003448 degs.) had two showers in both the men’s and women’s although reasonably clean, the floors seemed to be permanently wet. No mop to clean up after your self in the showers and these got muddy pretty quickly.

No childrens play area near the touring pitches, the only one being within the entertainment complex, not even an empty space to play ball games.

The swimming facilities where good and as expected got quite busy.
To get to any of the facilities you have to walk through an arcade, which with a 3 year old was a bit of a chore as once he was in there he took some persuading to leave. No alternative entrance was available for those who did not want to run the gauntlet of the machines.

We didn’t eat in any of the bars as the food was quite expensive for just the usual run of the mill, mass, pub grub.

We did use the chip shop on the touring site, expensive but good.

All the staff we spoke to or were served by where cheerful and helpful.

The site is well placed for Cleethorpes as it is not too far away and has plenty around to keep every one entertained and well fed.

This is a typical Haven site. We don’t normally use them if we are on our own but is good for the grandkids as plenty to keep them occupied if the weather is bad (which it was when we visited). I do get the impression though that haven goes out of their way to squeeze the last possible penny out of all their visitors.

We will probably use this again with the grand kids as they seem to enjoy it. My wife was quite ill whilst we where there and I was too on our return home so this may have influenced my opinion so will give it another go just to see.
