Directions: On main N24 between Clonmel and Cahir, about 4 miles west of Cahir. Entrance is on right if travelling from Clonmel. Well signposted.

Despite being on the main road this is a quiet site, set on a working fruit farm and with good facilities. Toilets, showers and the washing up area are situated in a large barn, which also provides campers with cooking areas in case it rains (as if!), a games room and a piano! Loads of local information is provided. This is an excellent site, very friendly and well looked after. There are plenty of electric hook-ups and no pitch is too far from the facilities. There are water taps dotted about, and one tap provides water direct from a spring.

The farm produces the most wonderful apple juice - I’m not normally a fan of apple juice but this is absolute nectar. Both times we’ve visited a bottle has been included in the price of the camping and it’s worth stopping for a night just for that!

There is a well-marked farm walk, with many different species of fruit and other trees being identified, and there’s also a tennis court with racquets provided - I think this is free.

If you’re travelling to or from the west coast of Ireland this would make an ideal stopover, but it’s also worth a visit in it’s own right and makes a good base to explore central Tipperary.

The nearest town is Cahir (pronounced Care) but it’s not really within walking distance. It is a good shopping centre, and there are plenty of bars and places to eat. The castle, at the bottom of the valley, looks as though it has grown from the rock, with the river rushing by. Nearby is the Rock of Cashel, one of the famous sites of Ireland.

The first time we visited Cahir we managed to unknowingly gatecrash someone’s 21st birthday party, thinking that the bar was simply very popular and had a live band on! Imagine our embarrassment when the buffet was served, about halfway through our first pint, and we realised what we had done. We were trying to sidle out when the birthday boy’s dad caught up with us, and despite our protests insisted that we should have some food and stay to join in the craic!
