I Just come back from a few days in Cardiff, found a good city Centre Site. The site is a municipal site operated by Dinas Caerdydd, the Cardiff City Council.
The site is in a section of Sophia Gardens, the city centre park, only 10 minutes walk from the town’s centre, adjoining the castle and the county cricket ground.

There are about 70 pitches, and so many water and electricity points it’s almost a full-service site, I’m sure there were more taps and sockets than there were pitches.
There’s a good shower and toilet block, plenty of rubbish points and the site’s roadways are well illuminated, at ground level so the lights don’t intrude.
The site is completely flat, and a lot of the caravan area is grassed through concrete to give hard-standings that look good. There are plenty of paved hard-standings as well, and a separate tent area.

The site is off Cathedral Road, turning into Sophia Close then left past the sports centre and cricket ground, and left again into a narrow and winding entry that turned out to be easier than it looked.

Fees for 2003 are £14.50 per night for a caravan, including electrics, and £4 per person per night for tenters; maybe a bit expensive, but it’s so handy for all that Cardiff’s centre has to offer that it was worth it.

An interesting approach along a narrow road with cars parked at the side, felt like we were disappearing in a building site, an impression which continued when we arrived on site as part of the site is currently behind hoardings, not sure what they are doing. The entrance

The warden was friendly enough and pointed us towards where our group were rallying.
Our pitch was hardstanding (concrete grid under grass which did its job well in the torrential rain we had over the weekend - no-one got bogged down). Each pitch had electric hookup and water tap.
£17 per night normal price, £11 rally price.

Two facilities blocks, one at the entrance included a laundry (didn’t inspect it) and one at the far end which we used. Clean and functional. All doors had keycode entry pads and the warden checked regularly that doors had not been left open. A necessary precaution since the site is in Sophia Gardens and entry and exit is not secured in any way so non-campers can and do walk through the site. I didn’t hear of any possessions going walkabout but probably wise not to leave anything outside your unit when going out.

This isn’t a site I would choose as being an attractive place to relax on site. There is some road noise being in a city location but not as bad as I thought it might be - have known a lot worse. There wasn’t any children’s play area, however there was plenty of space in the fields right outside the site for running around etc. (suggest keeping an eye on kids as the river runs at the far side of the field!).

As a base for a city-break, however, this site is ideal. The Taff trail passes right past the site, used for cycling (good quality path even suitable for trikes) and walking - in one direction this takes you right into Cardiff or the other way takes you towards Llandaff and the Cathedral. A bus stop not far from the site would take you into Cardiff if the walk is too much for you. A bus will also take you to Museum of Welsh History at St Fagan’s which is worth a visit.

If visiting Cardiff again I would be quite willing to stay here again.

This CL is located to the West of Cardiff, about 9 miles from the centre, down some scary country lanes so follow the Caravan Club directions NOT your Sat Nav !

The Hotel has B&B and the CL which is a hardcored area covered by grass

There are 10 amp electric supplies and a well constructed water and waste point.

The hotel serves a very filling breakfast (Cereal, fruit juice, full English, toast and preserves, tea or coffee) for £5 a head - a nice touch on Sunday means you’ve got no pots to do guys

Being close to the main feeder from the M4 (J33) it’s easy to get into the main shopping centre
