Mr & Mrs Russell

We stayed for just two nights, having pre-booked.

Instructions are confusing; they should read "at the Rdbt WITH the A4077, take the 4th exit marked No Through Rd. After 1/4 mile, turn left at the CL sign into a single-track road. Road bears round to the right; Site on the right in 100 yds. Pitch up and wait for owner to come to you."

The small site is divided into two; two ptiches on the lower part, 3 on the upper, all grass. The only hardstanding we could see wasn't idea for the hook-up points, and would have had the caravan facing the wrong way for any views, although there is enough room on the drive to leave an outfit temporarily if there are no pitches free when you turn up, and people were taking advantage of this.

If you are pre-booking, ask for the lower-site if poss, as this is level and has the best views. The upper-site (which we had) was very sloping and the views weren't as good. We have a 'jack' type leveller, but even at it's full height, it was still nowhere near levelling the van. We ended up turning the van nose-down the slope, and trying to level it with the jockey-wheel - we hit up on the same problem, it wouldn't go high enough! We had to 'borrow' bits of wood from a fellow caravanner, and breeze-blocks left near the entrance by the owner (hm, he's obviously had this problem before!) to get the front of the caravan levelled. Then we went round the back to discover we had no room to get the rear steadies down! It usually takes us 15-20 mins to fully pitch up (without the awning) - this time it took us an hour and a half. By the time we'd done, we were both exhuasted and in bad mood - but very pleased we'd brought the Landrover, not my Mercedes, which wouldn't have coped manoeuvering in such a tight space/on a wet grassy slope!

Despite the book giving the price of a pitch as £5, we were charged double this - but this is still good considering the electric hookup. There was a toilet available, and a shower (for an extra small fee), but we only used our own facilities so can't comment on them.

The site actually sits quite close to the nearby A465 dual-carriageway; 'secluded' it may be, but don't confuse this with quiet! However the noise did die down at night. Mrs Russell came round on our first evening and gave us a booklet about Abergavenny's tourist attractions, restaurants, pubs, etc. She spent quite a while chatting and telling us about places we might like to take in, and what local wildlife we might be lucky enough to see. She told us that many people ring up to book early in the year and ask for the lower-pitch.

The site has truly glorious views over the valley towards the Sugar Loaf mountain/Brecon Beacons. Having said that, you can't really walk into the Brecons from the site. There is a pub about half-an-hour's walk away, going under a lit underpass to avoid the A-road, and this walk is fine to give the dogs a leg-stretch. There's a huge supermarket about 5mins drive away, and Abergavenny itself has lots of shops, cafes and restaurants.

This CL seems popular - I advise pre-booking as early as you can, especially if you want the better lower-site. On our first night there were 6 outfits including a large motor-home, and it was a real squeeze!

All in all - beautiful views, quick access into Abergavenny/the Brecons, but very sloping and a 'tight-squeeze' when fully booked.
