We chose Gowerton for our first visit to Wales on location. We began to wonder if we had done the right thing, when we mentioned to anyone where we were going the response was the same, they said, " What are you going there for". We had serious doubts, until we got talking to Sally and Chris McCamley at Steamer Quay in the July of ’96.
Sally was born in that area of Wales so was able to give us a more accurate description of what we should expect.

Gowerton is situated at the start of the Gower peninsular in South Wales, near to Swansea.
It proved to be a good base for exploring South Wales. The Gower Peninsular boasts some outstanding coastal areas, Wurms head, Southgate and the coastal walk to Three Cliffs Bay and the Brecon Beacons, are some that spring to mind.
Kidwelly and it’s Castle are well worth a visit, the sound tape in the Sony Walkman, complete with sound effects, made the walk around the castle special.

Lyn and I found the Welsh approach to entertainment at their coastal resorts hard to accept. We had have been weaned on a diet of hustle and bustle. In English south coast resorts you can go for a walk in the evening along the front and browse around all the shops that stay open until 10.00. In Wales everywhere shuts at 6.00!

The site was good, the services were well placed and the toilet/shower block was clean and well designed (we have noticed that as we visit more and more sites, it becomes clear that most are of a standard design). Water in the showers was hot (easily adjusted) and constant.
The general appearance of the site was good, clean and free of litter, a standard feature of CC sites.

Lyn and I don’t think that we will return to Gowerton, not because of the site but because of it’s location, Wales.
There was another factor that swayed me to this way of thinking, the feeling that the English were not welcome in Wales, I was glad to get out of Swansea, when we gone in to do some shopping, due to the intimidation that I felt while in the main shopping centre. The locals seemed to be able to tell that we were outsiders, almost as if we had ’English’ written across our foreheads.

Finding the site was easy. if you follow the CC directions.
It is the ideal base from which to explore the Gower. At another time with better weather, Lyn and I might have found the place more enjoyable.

The site is situated on the minor road which joins the B4295 and the A 484 just to the west of Gowerton.
All the pitches on the site appear to be billiard table level and there is a fair spread of hedges and trees to give the site a comfortable, intimate atmosphere. The grass is cut very short and collected as it is cut, so that there is no fear of traipsing a load of cuttings into the caravan, tent or motorhome. The dog walk is worth a visit, even without a dog, as it is a maze-like area with mown paths between high stands of pampas type grass and reeds and, it covers a fairly large area.
On the roads, there is the mandatory one-way system, common to most club sites, but, it works very well and is not a problem.

Toilets and showers are, as expected, modern, spotless and with lashings of hot water. Drinking and waste water points are liberally distributed throughout the site, as are rubbish disposal points.
Our impression was of a very pleasant site, which we would be happy to re-visit.
To strike one small but critical note, during the day the presence of the A484 nearby as well as the railway between Swansea and the west coast, did tend to be rather noisy, but at night, the road quietened down and the frequency of trains was far less. All in all, it didn’t spoil our stay on this lovely site at the entrance to the beautiful Gower Peninsula.

A superb location close to sandy beaches and beautiful coves.

A lovely site with no Statics, the only drawback being that the toilet Block is right at the entrance of the site, this is due to building restrictions within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The facilities were first Class and must have been cleaned three times a day. The showers were lovely and free!

From the site there are two signed walks. One to a rocky Cove and another to Mewslade Bay. This beach (Mewslade Bay) was a gem. It is only accessible at low tide so the walk down needs to be timed well.

The site has 5 Fields enabling a couple to be specific. There is a NO DOGS field and a quiet Families only field, although during our stay the quiet field seemed no different to the rest of the park with everyone mucking in together.

The owners were informative, helpful and pleasant.
All in all a nice site and I look forward to returning.

I have just come across a new caravansite in the Swansea/Pembroke area.

It offers very easy access from the M4 and is close to the lovely Gower Peninsular and yet still only 15 minutes from excellent walking in the Black Mountains.

It is a new site. They have just upgraded from a certified location to a touring park. The facilities are clean and hot water to the showers and sinks is FREE which is so rare these days and saves all the messing about with tokens etc.
There is a small site shop which sells most provisions and is cheaper than supermarket prices.

It is well sheltered by the trees which surround the park and there is a small river which flows along two boundaries, there is easy access to the river and the fish will offer themselves to you with out too much coaxing.

Despite being close to the M4 you can’t hear the motorway.

For those of you into birdwatching, during a two week stay we saw the resident Heron and the resident Buzzards, also seen was a Kingfisher which was a first for me.

Close by is also the new Botanical Garden of Wales which is well worth a visit, we also visited a few castles locally and Brecon is worth a trip to see.

Directions.
M4 junction 49, turn right toward Ammonford, past the first lay-by then left, this left turn is about 3/4 from the motorway, follow the lane to the site.

This small to medium quiet site is situated just off the end of the M4 west of Swansea about 200 yards up the A483 just on the left.

Good access to a level field with a small river meandering around the site. Lovely to lull you to sleep on a night. The site is surrounded by woodland which gives a very private and personal camp site.

Warm welcome from the warden who keeps the site immaculate including small but very clean toilet block and well kept pitches. It is good to see that when the grass is cut it is also collected!

There is a small shop which is well stocked.

Not being familiar to the area we were pleased to find a good supply of up-to-date local information.

The best thing about the site is free hot water for showering and washing up plus freezer blocks frozen for free!

The site accommodates tourers and campers alike with hook-ups available.

Although a secluded site, all the major attractions, ie Swansea, The Mumbles, Gower Peninsular, Brecon Beacons, are all within half an hour or so drive (with lovely scenery to admire).

The owners are very friendly and accommodating and we are returning again this year for our annual holiday.
