The site is quite will signed once in Durlack although the route is quite torturous.

This is quite a large site with over 300 pitches although about half are given over to permanent units. The main touring section is immediately in front of Reception. It is pleasantly wooded with mature trees which gives a nice look to the site. Pitches vary in size and it is best to have a good look round to select one to suit the size for your outfit. There is a separate tent area near the entrance. Just inside the entrance is a small area with water, waste and electrics which I assume is just for overnight use as the area is quite small. Electric points are situated on the ends of rows of pitches so a long lead may be required. The connections are rated at 10amps and use CEE17 blue connectors. One disappointing thing about the site is that the main touring part does not have any water points. Water is only available at the toilet block so quite a walk from some pitches. The toilet block is of a good standard with seated pedestal toilets and paper provided. There is a playground area for children. We visited this site in early May and it seems that not all facilities were open all the time, these include a restaurant which seemed to open at the weekend and a small shop which was being prepared for the season. The site also offers W-Lan (WiFi) although I thought that it was pretty expensive with one hour costing €5. This site is near both a motorway and a railway so some noise is to be expected although we did not find it intrusive. This campsite accepts the ACSI discount card at €16 a night.

We used this site as a stop off point en route to Italy as its not far off the motorway. It would be a good base to visit the City of Karlsruhe. There are many other places of interest within easy travelling distance including Baden Baden and Museum Sinsheim. If you want to make use of public transport there is a station at Grotzingen within walking distance of the site. For shopping there is an Aldi store within walking distance. We also found a REWE a little further away, which is handy if you want to pay by credit card. Bread can be ordered from reception.

From south on the A7 Autobahn leave at Rasthof Allertal and but keep to the right and exit without entering the service station. At the end of the road turn left, the campsite is a short distance on the right.

This campsite which is not far from the A7 autobahn and is handy for an overnight stay as well as being perfectly suitable for a longer stay. The site has a rustic charm and is run by husband and wife Fred and Linda who are very welcoming. Pitches vary in size but generally quite generous. Electric connections are rated at 10amps using, in the main, CEE17 blue connectors. On some pitches a longer lead might be required. Water standpipes are dotted around the site.
The toilet block is modern and to a very good standard with seated toilets and paper provided. There are some nice touches like paper towels being provided at the chemical emptying point. There is some play equipment and at the end of the site a large area which could be used for ball games. Reception sells drinks and ice cream and there is also a bar/restaurant selling snacks and basic meals. Given its proximity to the A7 there is always a slight hum from the motorway but we did not find it intrusive. The site has a WiFi facility which works in the area of the Bar and costs a reasonable €1 a day. We were able to get all UK FTA TV stations with our 80cm dish. The campsite currently accepts both Camping Cheques and the ACSI Card outside of the peak season. Date of our stay mid May 2011.

An Ideal stop off point for people heading for the Baltic or Berlin. A longer stay would enable a visit to the delightful town of Celle which is about 20 miles away. Also Bergen Belsen is also close by. The River Aller borders one side of the campsite. For shopping there is a good selection of supermarkets in Schwarmstedt a few miles from the campsite.

To find Site:
Leave A5 autobahn at junction 64a and follow signs for Bad Krozingen and Staufen. As you approach Staufen follow road signed for Munstertal. The campsite is on the left a few hundred metres after the exiting Staufen sign. After crossing the railway line turn to the right and wait outside the campsite until booked in.

Camping Belchenblick has a superb location on the edge of the delightful town of Staufen im Breisgau in Southern Germany.
This campsite has 230 pitches, they vary in size but the average would be 80/90 sq metres. This can feel a bit tight when the campsite is busy. They are laid out in two sections. The smaller section is in front of the reception building and is mostly open although there are maturing trees around the perimeter. The more established, larger section, is situated behind the reception building and has more shade.
Pitches are allocated on arrival and you are assisted onto your pitch by one of the staff. No doubt you could request a different pitch if you were not happy with the one you were given.
Each pitch has its own electric point with a 16 amp supply. Electricity is metered and charged at the end of your stay. Whilst this may be a fairer method of charging you could be surprised by how much you use particularly if you favour using the caravan facilities rather than site facilities. Unless you request a pitch with its own water point, (limited in number) the nearest water points are at the two toilet blocks which can be something of a trek from the most distant pitches.
There are two toilet blocks, the original one near the old reception which whilst it is kept spotless is showing its age. The newer block, which is part of the reception building, is absolutely superb. It has individual shower rooms which include a toilet for one stop ablutions. The block also has dish wash facilities and washing machines. The campsite has a small indoor swimming pool and there is a games room with the likes of table tennis. There is a small bar which seems to be frequented by the permanent campers, rather surprisingly for a campsite of this size it does not have a restaurant although takeaway food can be ordered at the excellent campsite shop.
What many UK visitors will find difficult to get accustomed to is the closure of the site from 12.30 to 3.00pm, which, unless you plan ahead can be inconvenient.
There is limited parking immediately outside the campsite and a larger area a bit further away but this can be full of people using the adjacent municipal open air swimming pool. The local railway runs alongside the campsite which provides some interest but also some noise although trains stop by the early evening. It is usually the early morning where the noise is most intrusive, particularly if you are at the town end where you get the ping, ping of the level crossing as well! The more open area of the campsite tends to suffer more road noise.
This campsite only accepts payment in cash or Travellers Cheques, no bank or credit cards.

Out and about it is an easy walk into Staufen.
The town has three supermarkets, all close together. In my view the Aktiv is the best of the bunch.
The site does do bicycle hire if you don’t have your own and this is a good location to discover how good the Germans are at providing off road cycle ways. Switzerland is only 50 miles away if you fancy that excursion, but remember you will need a vignette if you want to use the Swiss motorway system. Freiburg is a reasonably short journey by car or train.

Belchenblick is just over the border from Alsace Lorraine into Germany. It is situated at the foot of the mountainous and wooded area of the Black Forest, travel west from the site and it’s as flat as the Fens, travel east and it rapidly becomes mountainous.

The site is long and narrow and organised with typical German efficiency; cliché I know but in my experience it’s true (!).

The owners are friendly and speak good English; there is a play area on site and a slightly odd indoor heated swimming pool, which is quite small and entirely enclosed but pleasant. It’s more like a spa pool than a campsite pool. There is also access to the municipal pool (which isn’t heated) next door, which was free to people staying at the site.
There is a good shop on site, and Staufen is a mile or two away.

There is plenty to do in the area. Disney fans will love Europa Park, which is the most blatant rip off ever (with "Euro Maus"); and a version of Pirates of the Caribbean which had me in fits because it was such a shot-for-shot copy.

Highly recommended.

From Gommern take road towards Plotzky/Schonebeck. A little way out of Gommern watch out for a bus stop on the right and the campsite is a sharp right immediately after, the campsite is signed. The final approach to the site is a little narrow with passing places. The site closes between 13.00 and 15.00 but there is quite a large car park opposite the entrance.

This campsite is popular with German families with children, particularly during school holidays. The touring section is separate from the permanent caravans. There are around 170 grass touring pitches. They are all of a good size and anyone with a larger caravan should not experience and space problems. Many of the pitches have electrical/water/waste shared between 2/4 pitches. One idea I liked about this site is that they have a small section of pitches reserved for stays of up to 3 days, the idea is to prevent daily disturbance to those staying longer. Electric points are rated at 16 amps and accept CEE17 blue connectors.
The toilet blocks are of a good standard with seated toilets and paper provided, however showers are coin operated. There are also some family bathrooms available. Access to the blocks and the site barrier is via an electronic tab for which there is a €10 deposit.
The site is really geared up for children and the centre piece of the campsite is the swimming lake. There are many other facilities for children, including an animal corner, so boredom is unlikely to be a problem! Near to reception is a small shop but it has limited opening hours. Also on site is a nice restaurant/bar and it is here you can buy time to use the site WiFi which operates only in that area. We were able to get all UK FTA TV stations with our 80cm dish. This campsite accepts the ACSI Card in the low season. Date of visit mid June 2011.

For visits from the site Magdeburg, on the River Elbe is not far away. For shopping there are supermarkets in both Gommern and Schonebeck.

Approaching Havelberg from the south on the 107 cross bridge and follow river on your left, do not go into old town. After second river crossing watch out for camping signs almost immediately on left. Take this road and watch out for another camping sign to the left by large car park. Follow narrow lane along river bank past rowing club to site entrance.

Campinginsel is in a very pleasant position on an island in the River Havel overlooking the old town. Like a lot of German campsites there is no access between 1.00pm and 3.00pm.
There are about 80 touring pitches of a pretty good size, some are open and others are in the wooded area. There are also some permanent vans. Some pitches will need levelling as the ground might be uneven.
Water points are dotted around the site and if you were close enough there are sufficient taps to allow individual connections.
There are several small toilet blocks dotted around the site with really excellent installations. The chemical toilet disposal is situated in the furthest corner of the site which could involve a long walk!
The campsite offers a WiFi connection, or W-Lan as they call it, this is provided free, although you are given a pass phrase.
The campsite has no shop but there is a bar which also seems to be open to passing customers.

The old town across from the campsite is also on an island and is reasonable compact, so easy to explore. It has a full range of shops and restaurants, some of which offer a discount to campers. To visit the Dom requires a bit more effort as its up hill all the way!

There are at least 4 supermarkets in Havelberg, some with familiar names like Aldi and Netto although perhaps the Edeka and Plus ones are the nearest to what I would expect from a supermarket! There are also a couple of fuel stations.

Camping Jägerbude
Jägerbude 3
DE-15537 Erkner OT Jägerbude
Germany

Tel: 03362 888 084

To Find Site:
Leave A10 Berliner Ring motorway at junction 7. Take second road on the right signed for Freienbrink and follow road through an industrial area following signs to campsite. The road eventually takes you over a single track bridge across the motorway and the campsite is a few hundred metres further on. The site closes between 13.00 and 15.00 hours but there is a parking area outside the campsite if you need to wait.

Camping Jägerbude is set of the banks of a river in open countryside close to the A10 Autobahn and is conveniently placed for trips into Berlin by train. It is a gently terraced site. Because of its proximity to the motorway there can be a background noise depending on the wind direction.
Pitches vary in size but most are generous. Some pitches have water and waste and a larger pitch size for which there is an additional nightly charge of between two and three euros. You are not allowed to use groundsheets on this campsite. There are some seasonal caravans on site. Electrics are rated a 10 amps and accept CEE17 blue connectors. There is a daily allowance of 5kws after which an extra charge per kilowatt used is made. Cables are locked into the electric bollards so you have no way of monitoring daily usage.
The toilet facilities are part of the Reception block and are of a very good standard with seated toilets and paper provided. However showers are coin in the meter as are the dishwashing sinks. The toilet blocks are locked at all times and a key is required for which there is a deposit of €20, the key also operates the site barrier. Reception keeps quite restricted hours but there is a bell that can be used if you need to speak to the wardens. The site has chargeable WiFi but it can only be used in the immediate area of Reception and not site wide as claimed. Also on site is a bar/restaurant, which seems independent of the campsite, where bread can be ordered and you can also buy day tickets for the Berlin transport system.
There is a children’s play area near the restaurant. Kayaking and canoeing would be a possibility from the campsite. Currently the site accepts both Camping Cheques and the ACSI Card, the latter is slightly cheaper as some extra charges are less with the Card. If you pay by MasterCard there is a 4% admin charge levied. Without doubt this campsite has very good quality facilities but you do feel you are always putting your hand in your pocket to pay for extras especially when using one of the discount schemes an example is that we were charged €2 a night each for Kurtax, the only site we used in Germany with such a tax. Very little English is spoken at Reception. Apart from BBC News 24 and a few obscure English language channels we were unable to get the normal BBC/ITV programmes on our 80cm dish.
Date of visit mid June 2011.

The major advantage of this campsite is accessibility to Berlin and it seems less frantic than some of the sites on the western side of the City. There is an hourly train service from Fangschleuse Bahnhof which is about four miles from the site and has excellent free parking. For shopping there is a good choice in Erkner about six miles from the campsite.

On the approach to Lemgo follow camping signs. Sat Navs tend to take you through part of the old town rather than round the ring road.

Campingpark Lemgo was formally two separate campsites almost next door to each other. The first part nearer to the road has those concrete blocks which the grass grows through and is mainly used by motorhomes although it does have touring and a few static vans as well. The part further down the lane is quite a rustic site surround by mature trees and similar in nature to a large CL. It can take in the region of 25 touring units although pitches are not delineated in any way.
Like a lot of German sites is has a mix touring pitches and permanent vans.

The electric supply is 16amps although some pitches require a long lead. Water points are dotted around the site. There appears to be no low level waste water disposal. The toilet block, whilst not new, is perfectly serviceable.

The site is under enthusiastic new ownership and they are aiming to gradually upgrade the facilities.
The first stage involves the refurbishment of a meeting/TV room for campers which will also have cooking facilities for tent users. In the autumn they plan to upgrade the toilet block.

There is a tendency, when the site is busy, to cram too many vans into the one open area but allow others around the edges of the site plenty of space. I think I would be happy to recommend the site but be aware that it can be busy at weekends. The site accepts the ACSI Card.

This site is ideally situated for a visit to the delightful town on Lemgo which is only a short walk away.
Almost next to the site is a Municipal swimming pool/lido which is popular with the locals.
We found at least two supermarkets in the town. There are plenty of opportunities for cycle rides on the many cycle paths around the town.
Further afield Hameln is 25 miles away and there is a local train to Bielefeld.

To Find site:
Leave A10, Berliner Ring, at junction 22 towards Potsdam on B1. About 2km after Geltow turn right.. immediately before railway bridge at sign for campsite. The site is about 2 km along this road which is narrow in places but you can pull over on either side to pass. The site is at the end of the road.

Campingpark Sanssouci has about 170 touring pitches plus a number of permanent caravans situated on the shore of Templiner See.
Pitch size varies but is generally OK although some tend to be long and less wide which can give the impression of being packed together. The larger pitches tend to be further into the site.
Because of the wooded nature of the site large twin axle caravans would need to proceed with care.
Fresh water and waste are handy to all pitches and there is the possibility for water and waste hook-up from the majority. For water you require a key which is provided for a modest returnable deposit of €3. Electricity supply (10amp) is convenient to all pitches.

There is a separate tent area near to the lake. The general campsite facilities are all to a very good standard with the addition of private bathrooms to rent and a large room that can be used by tent campers to cook and eat meals under cover.

Reception (closed between 13.00 and 15.00 daily) is a good source of local information and they sell a variety of maps and travel cards via a machine, most of the staff speak good English. You may need to enlist the helpful staff in reception to understand exactly what tickets you need! Behind reception is a small shop selling basics and bread rolls can be ordered the day before. There is a bar/restaurant. Only cash is accepted in payment at this campsite.

The site has a WiFi point, although only available in the vicinity of the bar and it requires the use of the site’s own dongles which requires software (provided) to be loaded onto your computer. The only cost is the hire of the dongle at €2 a day.

This is a very busy site where the main purpose of a stay is to visit either Potsdam or Berlin so be aware that, like other sites near main tourist attractions, it is not the place for a peaceful/restful stay! It is also quite an expensive site with average fees for 2 of around €30. (Date of visit May 2008)
The majority of people that stay at this site do so to visit either Potsdam or Berlin via the excellent transport links. The site provide a free shuttle bus to/from Pirschheide Bahnhof/tram stop. There is a Park and Ride facility at Pirschheide but this gets full during the week so the site shuttle might be the better option. Local transport tickets can be purchased at reception.

There are lots of cycleways in the vicinity of the site. Park Sanssouci is a level, mainly off road, cycle away. Supermarkets and fuel stations are dotted along the B1 although traffic wise going away from Potsdam is quieter.

The site is off the B9 south of Koblenz and about 5kms before Boppard. The site is well signed from both directions.

I think with this site its a case of location, location, location! The location is superb being right alongside the Rhine. However you do get the impression that the site management trade on this a bit as a reason for not improving the facilities. When we arrived in early/mid June it was clear the grass had not been mown for several weeks, although a start was made on the second day of our stay! The swimming pool is not available until the higher season fees kick in.
The toilet block whilst perfectly adequate, could do with an upgrade. There is a second block with showers (locked during our visit) plus a washing up/laundry area. Although the toilets are centrally located some pitches are a long way, away.
Pitches are not marked in any way which is fine in the low season but could cause problems when the site is full. Electric points I was informed by reception are 16amps, which seems to be borne out by the appliances we could use but mysteriously some of the electric boxes mention 4amps! Water points are dotted around the site.
There is a restaurant/bar on site which has a nice terrace next to the river. Reception does not keep extended hours but the barriers are not closed so the form seems to be to find a place and check in when reception is open. The real downside of this site is the intrusive noise from the busy railway lines on both sides of the river with the one next to the site being about 100 metres away.

During the low season the site accepts the ACSI Card but watch the dates. The site does not have any form of internet connection. This site only accepts payment in cash.

There are many opportunities for excursions up and down the Rhine Gorge. There are excellent transport links and good cycle ways. For food shopping Boppard is close by. Alternatively you could just sit and watch the river transport.

Campingplatz der Stadt
Koln
Germany

Very good site right on the river Rhine with tram access 15 mins into city centre. Flat, well drained but unmarked pitches, but not crowded at all, mostly locals by the look of it.
We wondered why we had the only tents nailed to the ground with guylines! These continentals don;t seem to understand weather like we Irish! Nice wee cafe opposite the site, spectacular thunderstorms.
It Seemed possible just to turn up, good mix of nationalities, adequate facilities, and a very good campers kitchen with free gas cookers. Camp chief friendly and good speaks good English.
Wee shop with poor selection of wine but good beer, fresh bread and freshly brewed coffee all morning. With the trams, very backpacker friendly in terms of transport, most people seemed to leave cars/motorhomes at the site and cycle/walk/tram about the place. If you *do* get a tram, though, make sure to have change for the tickets ....

Lots to do depending on time. Of course we must mention the cathedral , magnificent. There are also museums although we didn’t have time to do many. Met some locals at the cafe (see above) who gave us a good insight into past and present Germany. Everyone spoke English so we had little chance to practise German. Apparently there were good trips on the Rhine but we didn’t get to do any this time.

Await with baited breath the next installment - Alsace (and we *all* know what *that* means!!!)

From A7 leave at junction 73 (Gottingen) and take B3 towards Dransfeld. In Dransfeld watch out for Esso filling station and turn left immediately past it following the campsite signs. Your Sat Nav may want to take you down some minor roads to this campsite but best to stick with the route I have outlined.

Camping Am Hohen Hagen is a site that has a large section of permanent caravans, however there is an excellent touring section right at the top of the site with spacious pitches and some superb views over the surrounding countryside. There is a smaller touring section near to reception with individual water and waste. There is also a special area for motorhomes.

Electric points are 16 amp. Water points are dotted around the site at regular intervals. There appears to be no obvious low level waste water disposal. The chemical toilet point is in the men’s toilets, I am reliably informed there is another in the ladies toilet. The toilet blocks are really excellent.

Near reception is a small shop selling mainly bread and cakes. There is also a bar with a terrace overlooking a swimming pool complex which campers have access to. Access to the site is restricted between 13.00 and 15.00.
This site accepts Camping Cheques. We found this campsite to be very relaxing and quiet. The site has site wide WiFi access which is reasonably priced. Access cards can be purchased at reception but you can also log on and pay on-line.

The town of Dransfeld is within walking distance where you will find several supermarkets and other shops. A little further away is Gottingen which is well worth a visit not only for the old town but also as a shopping centre.

The best approach for this campsite is from the A4 exit onto the A17 on the west side of Dresden. Exit the A17 motorway at junction 3 onto B170 signed Dresden-Sudvorstatt. The campsite is signed from here. (the camping website above has a printable version of these instructions)

Whilst Campingplatz Dresden-Mockritz might not be considered as a long stay site is in an ideal position for a visit to Dresden. It is situated in the pleasant suburb of Mockritz to the south of the centre of City.

The site reception is closed between 11.00 and 16.00 but the site management invite you to find a pitch and register when reception reopens. This is a busy site and it is recommended that you arrive reasonably early to make sure you get a pitch, advance booking is not accepted.
This site has around 100 touring pitches including a separate section for tents. The ground is sloping from the main road with the most level pitches being at the bottom of the site, elsewhere you may require some front to back levelling blocks. There is a smaller section behind the main toilet block which is level and has individual water/waste/electric points, for which there may be an extra charge. In the main part of the site the pitches are laid out between roads so you have access either side. There is space for a caravan and awning with a parking place in front of the van on the wide site roads. The only problem with access to pitches is the need to negotiate a kerb at either side of the pitch.
Electric points at situated at both ends of each row and are rated at 6amps. From a middle pitch a 25 metre cable is just about long enough. Water points are placed at the end of every other row.
There are two toilet blocks, both of a very good standard but for showers you need a token which costs 50 cents. Reception sells a few essentials. The site has a WiFi point but this only works near to reception. There is also a small restaurant.

There is a bus stop immediately outside the campsite which takes you right into the centre of Dresden in about 10/15 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at reception but don’t forget to stamp them when you get on the bus. In my view Dresden is well worth a visit and fairly compact so you can see quite a lot if you only have a day to spare. If you need any food supplies then you can’t do better than visit the food department in the basement of the Karlstad department store which is superb, especially if you are fed up with the very basic German supermarkets

Campingplatz Lübeck-Schönböcken

Germany

Tel: 045189 30 90

To find site:
From the direction of Hamburg leave A1 Autobahn at junction 23 and turn left at end of slip road at traffic lights. The campsite is signed from here.

Campingplatz Lübeck-Schönböcken is a busy campsite in an urban setting on the outskirts of Lübeck with easy access from the motorway. It seems to have two main uses, firstly as a place from which to visit the City of Lübeck and secondly as an overnight staging post for Scandinavian visitors to and from their own countries. There is usually a high daily turnover of pitches so you should find space particularly if you arrive by mid-afternoon.
The site has a slight slope down from the entrance until it reaches the tent field at the bottom which is reasonably level. Some pitches are marked but most not which tends to lead to a bit of a free for all in the larger pitching area near to reception and electric connections in that area can be difficult to find when very busy. This is due mainly to overnighters wanting to remain hitched up or motorhomes parking at close quarters which can give the impression of being overcrowded. Caravans/motorhomes are not allowed to park across a pitch only nose or rear in. My suggestion would be to look at other areas first, using that area as a last result. Electric points are rated at 6amp and use CEE17 blue connectors.
There are only a couple of places to get water, either the toilet block or a tap near the tent field. The toilet block is of a good standard with seated toilets and paper provided, showers require a token although the block could be under pressure when the site is busy. At reception there is a kiosk where bread can be ordered and it also sells a few essentials. WiFi is available near the reception at a reasonable cost. Near the entrance is a children’s playground. We were able to get all UK FTA TV stations with our 80cm dish. Site fees during our stay were €18.50 a night including electricity and payment by credit card is possible.
Date of visit mid May 2011.

Lubeck City Centre (well worth a visit) is only a short bus ride away from just outside the site, you can also cycle. There are many other opportunities for excursions from the campsite. This site could also be a useful stop over for anyone heading for the ferries at Puttgarden for Denmark. About a mile from the campsite is a large shopping centre with one of the largest supermarkets I have seen in Germany and interestingly they have Union Jack flags on tills with English speakers! (I think for the benefit of Scandinavians rather than the British)

The site is well signed off road 2 which runs between Donauworth and Augsburg. Donau-Lech Camping is situated in open countryside on the edge of the village of Egglestetten. The site is divided in two sides, on one side is a lake used for swimming and on the other side are the pitches. Apart from one paved area all pitches are on grass and are of a generous size.
Electrics and water are convenient to all pitches. In common with a lot of German sites there are permanent caravans but these have their own area at the far end of the site. The toilets, laundry and dish wash are situated in the basement of the site house. They are of a good quality but you do have to pay for showers. There is a bar and a shop selling some essentials. We found everyone very friendly on this site and are indebted to the owner for his help when we had a problem with our car.

Road 2 is part of the ’Romantische Strasse’ so there are lots of places of interest within easy reach of the site. Donauworth is only a few miles away and as well as being a very attractive town which is worth a visit it also has a supermarket and banks if you need cash.
This is a very peaceful and relaxed site and it is recommended for either a long stay or just an overnight stop en route to Austria.

To Find Site:
Leave A9 autobahn at junction 56 and head towards Hilpoltstein and then Eckersmuhlen. In Eckersmuhlen follow signs to Wallesau and turn left in village at camping sign. Campsite is at the end of this road. Be careful with following sat nav directions as it may well take you along unmade up roads from Hilpoltstein/Hofstetten. The campsite closes between 1.00 and 3.00pm but there is parking outside of the entrance.

Camping Waldsee is a typical German rustic rural campsite set in a pine forest. The 60 plus touring pitches are mainly near the reception although some are situated amongst the many permanent caravans on site. Pitches are a bit ad hoc but there is usually plenty of room for van/awning/car. There are some serviced pitches for which there is a modest €1 a night extra charge. There are a few cabins for hire. Electrics are via CEE17 blue plugs and are rated at 16 amps, although it might be best to check for reverse polarity. With the ACSI Card there is a 4 kW daily allowance for electricity after which 50 cents a kW is charged. The main toilet block for tourers is in the centre of the site and contains all the usual services. They are of a nice standard with all pedestal seated toilets with paper provided. Showers require a token to provide hot water and these are supplied if using the ACSI Card or available at an extra charge if not. There is a second similar block further into the campsite. Also in the centre of the campsite is a small restaurant/bar serving a fairly basic menu but it seemed good value. Reception contains a basic shop and also information on the surrounding area. Site wide WiFi is available at an extra charge. Campers (and the public) have access to the lake for swimming and non-powered boating although the water did look a bit murky! I don’t think I would recommend this site for anything other than an overnight stop or perhaps a couple of days and I think I would suggest avoiding weekends if you enjoy peace and quiet. There is nothing wrong with the facilities or the site but we found some the regulars somewhat thoughtless, in terms of noise and BBQ smoke!

There are lots of opportunities for cycling and forest walking from the site. The small town of Roth is about 8 kms from the site and is worth a look and it also has shopping opportunities and fuel stations. Nurnberg is about 25 kms from the site and has many interesting museums.

To Find Site:
Coming from the north exit the A60 autobahn at junction 4, signed for Prüm, at the end of the spur road turn left for Lünesbach and once in village turn left to Waxweiler. On the outskirts of Waxweiler turn right at sign for Eifel Ferienpark Waxweiler to site. From the south exit A60 at junction 5 and take road to Waxweiler. The last 3kms is quite twisty and steep but should not be a problem. As you come into Waxweiler you come to a T junction, turn right here and proceed through town. Watch carefully a V junction with a sign to the campsite.

Eifel Ferienpark Waxweiler has 95 pitches set out on grass in two areas. The pitches vary in size but most are of between 90/100 sq metres. Most have electrics and water supply is available from either taps near the pitches or at the toilet block. The campsite is part of a larger holiday centre but the chalets are separated from the camping area as they are set out on the hillside above the campsite.
The toilet block, which is kept locked but you are provided with a key, is of a high standard. There is a nice children’s play area catering for quite a wide age range.
A small shop opens for 3 hours each morning selling mainly bread and some rather lovely ’kuchen’. It is best to order bread the day before as little extra supplies are kept. Next to the shop is a small bar/restaurant which seems to do reasonably priced meals. Next to the site is a municipal swimming pool. Out of season the site accepts Touring Cheques which can make a stay good value.

The town of Waxweiler is a short walk away. There are numerous hotels which do meals, a filling station and a supermarket. This is very much hidden Germany being not far over the border from Luxembourg. Prüm, about 14 miles away, is worth a visit as is a drive in the surrounding countryside.
During our stay the site was quiet and there was plenty of room. We enjoyed our stay here.

Exit A3 motorway at junction 71 south of Wurzburg in the direction of Ochsenfurt on the B13. On the approach to Ochsenfurt do not cross river but take road straight ahead signed for Kitzingen. The campsite is signed on the right after 1km and is well signed.

This campsite is situated directly on the River Main a couple of kilometres from Ochsenfurt.
Like a lot of German sites it has a mixture of permanent caravans and touring pitches. The site accepts the ACSI Card however if you want a riverside pitch or a serviced pitch you will pay an extra €3 a night. Site fees can be paid by credit card.
The pitches are all of a reasonable size and have 10 amp electrics. Water points are situated at the ends of rows. For those only wanting to stay one night they have a special area set aside where you can remain hitched up. The site is closed between 13.00 and 15.00pm. Its a good idea to consider this before arriving as there is not much space outside of the gates.
There is one central toilet block which is to a very good standard. Reception has local information and next door is a small site shop selling a few essentials and bread can be ordered the day before. At the end of the main facility block is a small swimming pool. The site also has a restaurant/bar. T-Mobile have a hotspot at the campsite and you can buy time on-line.

Apart from the local towns of Ochsenfurt and Frickenhausen, which are close to the site, Wurzburg is also within easy reach either by car, bus or train. For general shopping there is a good Rewe supermarket not far from the Bahnhof in Ochsenfurt. One advantage of using the Rewe supermarkets is that they are unusual in accepting credit cards, this is not the norm in Germany.

To Find Site:
Leave A61 motorway at junction 6 on the spur motorway in the direction of Bad Durkheim. At second set of traffic lights turn right and turn second right at campsite sign. The campsite is at the end of this road. The site is closed between 1.00 and 3.00pm so park on right on approach road as parking immediately outside site is limited. (Avoid the temptation to leave at junction 19 on the A6 towards Bad Durkheim as there are some narrow places in some of the towns and villages en route.)

This campsite is part of the KNAUS chain of campsites. It is a large campsite with approaching 600 pitches although over half are given over to permanent and rental units. From reception there is one long central road through the site with pitching areas off this road. Pitches are all on grass except for a few serviced pitches which have a paved area. Size varies but generally between 80 and 100 sq metres although there are some larger ones. The serviced and lakeside pitches attract an additional nightly fee. Electric points are rated at 16 amps and connectors are CEE17 blue plugs, longer leads may be required on some pitches. Drinking water taps are place at regular intervals along the main site access road. There are three toilet blocks on the site. They are all of a very good standard with seated pedestal toilets with paper provided. Site wide wireless internet is available at an extra charge. Next to reception is a shop/café where bread can be ordered, although we were not told this was the case when we arrived. Despite a mix of nationalities using the site there is no information in anything other than German which is perhaps a little unwelcoming! The onsite lake can we used for bathing and is popular with people staying onsite. For children there is a large play area suitable for all ages. Adjacent to the campsite is a restaurant/ Beer Garden. In a separate area at the far end of the campsite there is an area set aside that accepts larger groups of children of various ages. We were not aware of this causing any difficulties. Next to the campsite is a small airfield from which light aircraft and helicopters operate from, during our stay there was not a particular noise nuisance. This is a good site for an overnight stop or perhaps a longer stay. Date of stay late June 2012.

The campsite is situated in a major wine growing area and there are several wineries within walking distance. The attractive Spa town of Bad Durkheim is a short drive from the site. There are many opportunities for walking and cycling from the site. There are a couple of supermarkets within a short distance of the site.

This site is about 17 miles from Trier on the Saarbrucken road (51) and is well signed from just after the village of Ayl. The approach to this site is very steep with about 12 hairpin bends. As a result of its height above Saarburg the site owners have installed a chair lift which takes you right down into the town. Warsberg is a large site and is Dutch owned and as a consequence the bulk of the campers are Dutch. One half of the site, divided by the reception block is given over to bungalow’s and the rest is given over to camping. The furthest pitches are a long way from the reception and toilet blocks but these pitches do have some of the best views. The size of pitches is good and the site has a spacious feel despite its overall large size. The management seem to have a policy of pre-allocation of pitches. So despite the apparent emptiness of the site you can’t choose where you want to be although at a push they will allow you to move providing the alternative pitch is not due to be used by someone else during your stay.

This is not so much a camp site but more a holiday complex. The toilets are excellent as is the site shop. There is a takeaway, bar and a rather nice looking restaurant. Facilities for youngsters are excellent with a swimming pool and large play area.

There is plenty to do in this region to fill a week at this site. The town of Saarburg is very pleasant. Trier is well worth a visit. The Saar and Moselle also give plenty of opportunities to explore.

From Rostock take road 105 signed for Stralsund. After 40kms take left turn towards Barth. (sat navs can take you to the site via some quite minor roads, down to single track in places so best to use the route via Barth) Follow the road through Barth and in Pruchten turn left following campsite signs.

Camping Naturcamp Pruchten is situated a few miles inland from the Baltic Coast on the Zingst Peninsular. The site has two sections. The original site which is heavily wooded with pitches amongst the trees and a new section with a more open aspect with generously sized serviced pitches. In the wooded section the pitches are more randomly placed. The older section of the site also accommodates many permanent caravans and structures.
Electricity supply is rated at 16amps and uses CEE17 blue connectors.

The main toilet block looks quite recent and has very good facilities with seated toilets and paper provided. Likewise the older block is also of a good standard but not always open. The site has a Bar/Restaurant and a small shop (limited opening hours) selling essentials and bread can be ordered the day before for morning collection. For children there is a playground for smaller ones and table tennis and a kick about area for older ones.
Local information is available in Reception a little of which is in English but the bulk in German. Bicycles can be hired from the campsite. WiFi is available within the vicinity of reception the cost being more reasonable the more you buy. Apart from BBC News 24 and a few obscure English language channels we were unable to get the normal BBC/ITV programmes on our 80cm dish via our FTA receiver.
Date of visit late May 2011.

This site is ideal for using as a base to explore this interesting area of Germany. There are good cycle paths from the campsite. You can also walk to the inland estuary from the site. For shopping there are a couple of supermarkets in Barth a few miles from the campsite.

To Find site:
From Wolgast on B111 continue to Zinnowitz, just after town sign watch out for a right turn signed to Lütow (also signed for campsite) Take care at the turn as its quite sharp into a narrower road. Continue to Lütow and just past large Hotel turn right following the campsite signs. From here to the campsite is about 1 mile along a single track road with some passing places so proceed with care.

Natur Camping is a large campsite with around 450 pitches although the number of real touring pitches is much smaller with many of the other pitches being taken up with permanent caravans and structures. As suggested by the name the site is situated in a pine forest and slopes down to the shores of the Achterwasser and the Baltic Coast is not far away.
Some pitches are amongst the trees and some with a more open aspect. The size of pitches varies but most are quite tight for space. We could not get our 7.3 metre overall length caravan across our pitch and even lengthwise it was just about room to allow access around the van, with our canopy up there was not enough room for the car which had to be parked on ground across from the pitch. Most pitches seem to be no more than 80 sq. metres and some less. No doubt in the more random pitching areas you could have more room around the caravan. Our pitching area did have an individual water tap and shared waste point. Electrics are rated at 16 amps and accept CEE17 blue connectors.

The toilet block has seated toilets and paper provided however we did find the blocks a bit gloomy and in need of a makeover. The second toilet block is nearer the beach and whilst the toilets and showers seemed OK the individual washing cubicles did not seem to be in use. The arrangements for chemical toilet disposal are quite frankly unhygienic as the disposal point is right next door to the motorhome drinking water supply and quite frequently I saw people putting the nozzle of the drinking water hose into their cassette toilets! As part of the camp is what is called a ‘Störtebeker Camp’ which is an educational unit where groups of school children holiday and use the beach.
Near to Reception there is a small bar/restaurant however the advertised shop seemed to be closed during our stay despite the ACSI book showing it would be open. Bread could be ordered from Reception. Also in the reception area free WiFi is available although it seems only when reception is open. Apart from BBC News 24 and a few obscure English language channels we were unable to get the normal BBC/ITV programmes on our 80cm dish. The site accepts the ACSI Card in the low season. Date of visit early June 2011.The site barrier requires a control tab for which there is a €25 deposit. Bicycles of all sizes can be hired on site and there is also a watersports centre. Whilst this campsite met our needs in terms of location we did find it rather unkempt almost as though no pre-opening work had been completed like grass cutting so not somewhere we would rush back to.

The location of the site makes it easy to visit many of the attractions of the Insel Usedom region. Peenemunde, famous for the development of rockets is only about 15 miles away. Nearer is the seaside of Zinnowitz and the old town of Wolgast which has several supermarkets.

Leave A44 at junction 67 onto road 251 towards Istha and Ippinghausen. In Ippinghausen take road to Naumburg and as you enter town turn right opposite the Edeka supermarket to campsite. (The campsite has an excellent graphical representation of the route from the autobahn on it’s website.)

Camping Naumburg is set on the edge of the pretty small town of Naumburg. The site is terraced and pitching areas split into circular sections taking 6/12 touring units. The banks between pitching areas are left uncut and as a result have perfusion of wild flowers. Each section has its own water tap. The bottom two sections have serviced pitches for which there is an extra nightly charge. Most of the pitching areas have an open aspect but near to reception is a small section in a wooded area.
Electrical supply is rated at 16amp and the bollards accept CEE17 blue connectors.

There are two toilets blocks of excellent quality with seated toilets and paper provided. Access is via an electronic tab, deposit of €15 required. The tab also is used in the showers to provide hot water. I understand the tab also controls the site entrance barrier but all the time we were there the barrier was in the raised position.
In the reception area is a small shop where bread can be ordered. The site has a small takeaway/eating area behind the reception with prices that look quite reasonable. Near to here is a children’s play area. There is free WiFi which is site wide. In order to access the internet you have to make some minor changes to the LAN settings on your computer with the information provided by the campsite. The owner keeps several donkeys which at times roam the site although they seem quite affable, including the owner! They can be feed but not with fresh bread. We were able to get all UK FTA TV stations with our 80cm dish. During the low season the campsite accepts the ACSI Card.
Date of visit June 2011.

Naumburg is only a short walk from the campsite, for those interested in railways there is a small museum. The large town of Kassel about 25 miles away. Leave A96 at junction 2 signed for Lindau. At roundabout follow campsite signs. Park Camping is just before the Austrian border, you turn right off of Bregenzerstrassa into the road that leads to the campsite. This road will have cars parked but there is plenty of room. Immediately before the campsite entrance is a level crossing so make sure you can completely cross before proceeding.

Park Camping Lindau is situated on the shore of the Bodensee between Lindau and Bregenz a short distance from the Austrian border.

This busy site has around 270 pitches of which about a quarter are taken by permanent vans. There is a choice between fully serviced pitches (at an extra charge of €2) and standard ones, there is no difference in size. In addition there are two separate areas for tents.
Electric supply is 16 amps. Reception has local information although not much in English. Across the road from reception is a quite well stocked shop plus bar/restaurant. Behind reception is the main toilet block which is to an excellent standard including laundry facilities. There is a large covered area for washing dishes and preparing meals with coin operated hobs. Further into the site is a second block of toilets only.
T-Mobile have a hotspot on this campsite which you can sign up to online. Payment can be made by Maestro card. The railway runs along the top end of the site so there is some noise but not particularly obtrusive.

There are many opportunities for excursions from this campsite with Lindau and the island of Insel (well worth a visit) only a few miles away. The rest of the Bodensee is also there to explore. However be aware that both Austria and Switzerland border the lake and if you drive on the motorways in either country you will require a Vignette, ordinary roads don’t require the Vignette. To fill up the car its well worth going over the border into Austria where, diesel particularly, is cheaper than in Germany.

From Bitburg take road 50 for 10kms to Oberweis. Just after village sign look out for sign to left for Kôhler Stuben Restaurant. There is plenty of parking space outside campsite. Reception is housed below the restaurant.

Prümtal Camping is a relaxing campsite with excellent facilities 10kms from Bitburg in the Eifel region of Germany.
On one edge of the site runs the River Prüm which gives it a very natural feel. Pitches, which are of a good size, are all on grass and in several sections. Like most German campsites there are some permanent vans but these are in a separate area.
The pitches at the end of the site are some way from the facilities. When you book in members of your party are issued with a card that allows access not only to the site barriers but also the main toilet block and the swimming pool.
The main toilet block is to an excellent standard. There is a second, smaller block, which consists of mobile units. Perfectly serviceable but not as luxurious.
Electricity supply is 16amps. Water points are dotted conveniently around the site. Bread rolls can be ordered from reception the day before, there is also a small shop selling some essentials.

Next to the entrance to the campsite is a swimming pool which campers have free admission to. The on site Bar/Restaurant, which is also open to the public, is really excellent with friendly staff and a wide choice. It also has a section at the rear, overlooking the swimming pool which specialises in Italian food, but mainly pizzas.

In the low season the site accepts the ACSI Card which offers a useful discount on regular prices. The site offers a free WiFi connection, the strongest signal being near to reception but it can be received further away if in a direct line outside.
Children seem to be well catered for with an adventure style playground and a football pitch.

For serious shopping it does mean a trip to Bitburg where there are several supermarkets. Whilst in Bitburg you could visit the home of the famous Bitburger beer, they do guided tours. Less than 20 miles away is the Luxembourg border and the delightful town of Echternach and Luxembourg City is only another 25 miles further on.

To Find Site:
The most direct route to this site is via the Romantische Strasse either from Rothenburg or Bad Mergentheim. However coming from the south the road is narrow in places so some suggest exiting the A7 at junction 105 and heading to Uffenheim and then following the road to Bad Mergentheim, on reaching the Romantische Strasse, turn left, in Creglingen watch out for campsite sign at right turn and then following campsite signs to Münster. Alternatively leave A81 at junction5 heading for Bad Mergentheim. After about 5 miles turn right for Bad Mergentheim. (using this route avoids a lot of small towns and villages) From Bad Mergentheim follow signs for Rothenburg to Creglingen, then as above.

This is a delightful campsite only a couple of miles off the ’Romantische Strasse’. The people that run the site are both helpful and friendly.
The main touring pitches are set out in three areas. The first is immediately behind the new Reception building. These are open without shade but have a nice view of the village. The second area is much more wooded with pitches set out amongst the mature trees. There is a smaller more open section on the other side of the stream that dissects the main area. Whilst some pitches are on grass most have a gravel base which the grass grows through. They are all of a good size.
There are some permanent caravans but these are mainly set out in their own areas on the higher terraces.
Water, drainage and electrics are available to each pitch.
The site has three toilet blocks, the newest is under the Reception, there is another near the restaurant and a third at the far end of the site. All are of a good quality and kept clean, access is by key for which you pay a €10 returnable deposit.
At Reception you can order bread rolls and it also sells a few basic foodstuffs, including beer and wine. Reception also has internet access and well as information about the local area.
The restaurant is rather good and they do have an English version of the menu which you can ask for. There is a small indoor swimming pool. The site is closed to vehicles between 1.00 and 3.00pm, however there is a large car park opposite the campsite entrance where you can leave your car during this time.
Camping Romantische Strasse accepts Camping Cheques in the low season. Date of visit, early September 2005.

Creglingen is only a couple of miles away and whilst quite pretty is not as spectacular as towns like Rothenburg. It does have a couple of supermarkets and fuel stations. Between the campsite and Creglingen is the Thimble Museum which is quite interesting and the entrance fee is only €1.50.
If you walk out of the top end of the site there is a lake which is used for swimming. The main advantage of this campsite is that it is very near to the Romantische Strasse and you don’t have to travel far to discover some of the fascinating towns at the northern end of this 200 mile long road.

Campingplatz Rudesheim am Rhein

Rudesheim am Rhein
Germany

Tel: 06722 2528
Fax: 06722 941046

This campsite is situated on road 42 which runs between Kobelnz and Wiesbaden. The road is better coming from the Weisbaden direction although approach from the north is spectacular because you follow the Rhine almost all the way but it is narrow in places.

The site is on the Rhine which makes it more interesting but like any Rhine side sites there is a certain amount of noise from river traffic, I have to say it did not bother me. There are lots of mature trees which afford shade to most pitches. The pitches are mainly on grass but don’t appear to be marked out, although there seemed to be plenty of room around units.

The exception to grass is an area set aside for motor caravans which has a concrete block base which allows grass to grow through. If you have a problem with cross polarity with your electrics the man who sets your electrics up can flick a switch to correct the polarity. On site there is a bar and small shop. The toilet block is of excellent standard but you do have to pay for showers.

You can walk into the town of Rudesheim along the river from the site. It is an ideal base for exploring this part of the Rhine.

To find site:
Exit A6 Autobahn at Kaiserlautern West and take B270 towards Pirmasens. After about 9kms turn left to Karlstal/Trippstadt and follow signs for campsite and Neuhof. Part of the final approach is narrow in places but no problem if care is exercised. From the direction of Landau take B10 and at Annweiler take B48 towards Johanniskreuz and follow campsite signs.

Camping Sagmuhle is almost in the middle of nowhere about 10 kms south of Kaiserlautern! It’s in a heavily wooded valley with a lake that can be used for swimming and boating.
There are several pitching areas but the main one is opposite the reception building. All pitches are on grass and of a reasonable size although they do vary. Like most German campsites the camping area is shared with permanent units although this site does have touring areas.
Electrical connections are of 4 amps using continental round 2 pin connectors. Whilst 4 amps seems low we found it perfectly OK if treated like 6 amps which is more commonly found. You can upgrade to a 16 amp metered supply using 1kw tokens at 40 euro cents each. If you make use of this facility you must use the right connector in the box with the meter.
Water points are handy to all pitches. The toilet block in our section of the campsite was to a good standard with seated toilets and paper provided. Unusually this campsite also has a caravan dealer and accessory shop attached but unfortunately the shop does not accept credit cards or UK Bank Cards. Bread can be ordered for collection by 10.00am the following day.
The gates to the campsite are closed from 12.30pm to 2.00pm and from 9.00pm to 7.00am the following morning. There is parking within the site but outside the pitching areas during the hours of closure.
WiFi is available via a T-Mobile access point and you can pay on line. At 8 euros for an hour its quite expensive but if you will be in Germany for any length of time the monthly pass at 29 euros would be the cheaper option. The site has a large Restaurant and a Bar. Camping Cheques can be used in the low season.

There is ample opportunity for walks and cycling direct from the campsite. For shopping the best bet is Kaiserlautern with a choice of several supermarkets.

Date of visit mid June 2009.

To Find Site:
This campsite is about 35 kms south of Koblenz on the A61 Autobahn, take exit 43 and follow signs to Pfalzfeld. The campsite is just through the village of Pfalzfeld in the direction of Hausbay and is well signed.

Schinderhannes, which is open all year, is a useful campsite situated not far from the A61 which offers possibilities of either an over night stay but is worth a longer stay if you have time.
It is quite a large campsite which is split into three sections. One for permanent vans which are separate from the touring pitches. There are several hardstanding areas for overnight transit stays. The rest of the site is for normal use and the pitching areas are split into pleasant woodland glades.
Most pitches have electric hook-ups but not all, the ones without I suspect are mainly used by tent campers. Water and drainage are available in each pitching area.
Reception, which is open all day and stays open well into the evening for late arrivals, has internet access available, local information, and you can also purchase drinks and ice cream.
Behind Reception is a small shop where you can buy bread, bottled drinks and basic foodstuffs, but it is only open between 7.00 and 10.00am each morning.
Adjacent to the shop is the smaller of the two toilet blocks and perhaps could be a bit strained given the number of transit campers. However further into the site is the largest toilet block I have ever seen on a campsite! It is on two levels with mainly WC’s in the downstairs section. At ground level it houses all the usual facilities include some very large shower cubicles and some family showers. Both blocks are heated and maintained to a very good standard.
Schinderhannes has a very nice restaurant which is worth a visit, but be warned they have big portions!
On site there is a lake which can be used for fishing (permit needed), it also looks as if it could be used for boating and swimming.
This campsite accepts Camping Cheques. Date of visit August 2005.

This campsite is situated about half way between the Mosel and Rhine so there are many opportunities for excursions. Likewise nearer to the campsite there are cycle paths and lots of places to walk. For more serious food shopping the nearest town to the campsite with a supermarket is Emmelshausen about 6 miles away.

Stortebeker-Camp

Germany

Email: info@lietzow.net
Web site: www.lietzow.net

To find site:
Approach Lietzow on road 96 and at second traffic lights turn right (campsite signed) at end of road campsite is on the left. The approach road is uphill right the entrance of the site.

Stortebeker Camp is a small campsite and motel situated close to the main road across Rugen Island towards the ferry port ay Sassnitz. There are about 40 touring pitches plus some tent pitches amongst the trees. This site can be very busy so in order to get a pitch it might be wise to either arrive very early or telephone ahead. Pitch size varies quite a bit and larger units could find it a tight fit particularly if you want to put up an awning. All pitches have service points for water and waste. Electricity supply is rated at 16amps and bollards accept CEE17 blue connectors however it might be best to check for reverse polarity.
The site has a nice toilet block with seated toilets and paper provided.

Bread can be ordered from Reception and as part of the same building is a nice bar/restaurant area with and outside terrace. Opposite the terrace is a small children’s play area. The site currently does not have any internet facilities although the owner did mentioned that he hoped to have it installed soon. Apart from BBC News 24 and a few obscure English language channels we were unable to get the normal BBC/ITV programmes on our 80cm dish The site accepts the ACSI Card in the low season and the CCI Card will also solicit a small discount. Date of visit end of May 2011.

The campsite is quite centrally situated to explore Rugen Island and many of the popular destinations are a relatively short drive away such as Binz a delightful seaside town. For shopping most of the towns on the island have some supermarkets but for more comprehensive shopping Bergen, about 7 miles away, has a good selection. There is a good cycle network around the island, including from near the site. Trains stop at Lietzow for various parts of the island.

To find site:
Leave A5 motorway at junction 58 and head towards Herbolzheim. At entrance to town at roundabout turn right following campsite signs. At next roundabout turn left. At T junction turn left towards Herbolzheim and on re-entering town turn right at Edeka supermarket still following campsite signs. In about 1km watch out for signs to swimming pool and turn left. Follow road past swimming pool to campsite.

This is a pleasant Black Forest campsite with a friendly and helpful owner.
As the name suggests this campsite is terraced with an attractive ambience especially the shrubs and trees that form a colourful backdrop to the pitches. The higher sections of the site are taken up with permanent vans but the lower section, near reception is where all the touring pitches are. The pitches are of reasonable size but tend to the longer than they are wide which, if you have an awning, requires the car to be parked across the pitch. They are marked out by trees and usually allocated when you book in. Larger pitches are available at a small surcharge.
Eurocamp has a presence at this site but most of their units are in a separate area. The site is closed between 13.00 and 15.00pm but there is plenty of parking near the entrance.
The main reception building also houses the toilet block, which is to a good standard, although it has seatless toilets. Above the toilet block is a restaurant. Water points are situated at the ends of each row. Electric supply is 16 amp. The site accepts the ACSI Card in the low season which provides a useful discount on standard fees. Payment can be made by credit card. The site offers a very reasonably priced WiFi service.
Being near to the main Rhine motorway it can be quite busy so it might be best to time you arrive by mid afternoon to be sure of a place.

The town of Herbolzheim is a reasonably short walk/cycle away from the campsite. There are several supermarkets to chose from including a Rewe if you require one that accepts credit cards. Europa Park, a well known children’s theme park, is about 5kms away. The site is situated in the Black Forest approximately half way between Freiburg in the south and Baden Baden in the north so there are many opportunities for exploring the surrounding countryside. Just down from the campsite is a large outdoor swimming pool/lido

To Find Site:
Exit A8 Ulm-Stuttgart autobahn at Behelfs/Hohenstadt and follow signs to Hohenstadt. In Hohenstadt follow signs to campsite.

Camping Waldpark is situated on the edge of the small town of Hohenstadt and is handy for an overnight stopover en route, or a longer stay.
You get a very warm welcome from the couple who run the site and they both speak very good English. Like many German campsites the bulk of the pitches are taken up with permanently sited caravans. There are about 40/50 pitches available for touring units. It is a terraced site but all pitches are reasonable level. They vary in size but most are quite generously sized with water and electric points shared between pitches. There are some small pitches nearer reception for tents. Electrics are via CEE17 connectors and the supply is 16amps.
Bread can be ordered from reception and is available for collection between 8.00 and 10.00am. There is a new site restaurant/bar which looks very nice. WiFi is available in the Bar area and is free to use. The site has a swimming pool and quite a large adventure type playground for children.
There is one centrally situated toilet block which is to a good standard with seated toilets and paper provided. The only downside is that it is some way from most of the touring pitches and anyone with walking difficulties might struggle, especially emptying a chemical toilet. The site requests that people don’t drive to the toilet block.
You can use your ACSI Card at this site in the low season.

Date of our visit mid June 2009.

We did not stay long enough to explore the area but there are supermarkets and fuel stations in Laichingen about 8kms away from the site. Reception has brochures of local attractions.
