To Find Site:
Leave A61 autoroute at junction 23 and head towards Limoux on D118. Not far before Preixan the road divides into a short length of dual carriageway section, The campsite is on the left a short distance after the dual carriageway section ends and is well signed. Reception is closed between midday and 3.00pm but there is quite a bit of room at the entrance to park.

Camping Grand Sud is a few miles south of Carcassonne.
It has around 100 touring pitches and one side of the site is bordered by a lake where fishing is allowed. They vary in size but most are of a reasonable size. Some are on grass but many, particularly near the lake and under trees are on hard baked soil and in places uneven.
There are about 40/50 mobile homes on site. Electric points, 6 amp supply, use mainly CEE17 connectors but watch out for reverse polarity. Water points are dotted around the site.
The toilet/shower facilities are housed in several small blocks around the site and seem to be unisex. They are of an acceptable standard but could do with an upgrade. Toilets are seatless and no paper provided.

During the high season the site has a restaurant/bar where bread can be ordered. Near the restaurant is a small swimming pool with a slide. There is also a WiFi facility at the bar. Unfortunately in the low season, when the ACSI Card is accepted, none of these facilities are available so all you are getting at this time of the season is a pitch with electrics and water and limited toilet facilities.
There seems limited English spoken at reception. Our visit was during the third week of September and one would have to say the site generally lacked the impression of TLC being spent on it. Difficult to judge what it would be like at other times of year but would have thought it better as a stop over or short stay site. The campsite is quite close to the D118 so there will be some road noise at certain times of day.

La Cite, the Medieval City just outside Carcassonne is within easy reach of the campsite and is well signed. This is a big wine producing region so there are lots of opportunities to buy wine direct. For shopping and fuel you have a choice of Carcassonne or Limoux in the other direction.

Date of visit: Late September 2009

Site visited: 2007

Camping Gavin was booked through the Camping and Caravanning Club’s Carefree Travel Service and is probably one of the best campsite we’ve stayed at.

Situated in a valley near the Ordesa National Park, the south facing, terraced campsite is set in beautiful surroundings with fantastic views from most pitches. The shower and toilet blocks are worth a mention as they would put a lot of 4 star hotels to shame. In fact, they were that spotless and modern that I could happily move into them tomorrow!

The site has a lot of facilities including tennis and table tennis, a supermarket, a bar/cafeteria plus a restaurant. We ate at the restaurant every other night as it was so reasonably priced and the food very good. About £10.50 for a 3 course meal including wine, mineral water and bread. The food was local, rustic and lots of it. The boys even tried unusual stuff like cuttle fish and rabbit.

The restaurant, like all others in the area didn’t open until 8.30 (when the sun went down) so expect to eat late. The town of Biescas is about a mile downhill while the village of Gavin is about half a mile uphill. Every time we visited Biescas it was shut, so we never ended up eating there.

Whilst the area was stunningly scenic, there wasn’t a lot in the way of pretty, historic towns to visit nearby. Torla, at the gateway to Ordesa was an exception. The small hamlet of Yésero on a hill nearby had a small popular restaurant and a large, even more popular dog.

The region has a lot of walks and other activities of which we participated very little - mainly because there wasn’t any leaflets in English and it was too darned hot!

We travelled by ferry to Santander and found the roads very easy, although it did take us about 6 hours to get there rather than the 4.5 predicted by the AA and Michelin. This included a couple of breaks and a wrong turning or 3. Me and Mrs Archie still remain on talking terms though! A great site.

To Find Site:
Leave AP7 motorway at junction 3, Figueres north taking N11 bypass and then C260 signed for Roses. At Castello d’Empuries take GI 6216 signed to Sant Pere Pescador. In Sant Pere Pescador follow camping signs, some roads quite narrow. Once out of the town and over river bridge campsite is well signed. If coming from the south it might be best to avoid C31 to Sant Pere Pescador as there are major roadworks at the moment which makes identifying the correct turning more difficult.

Camping L’Amfora is a large, busy but professionally run campsite right next to a lovely sandy beach. There are in the region of about 700 pitches most of them touring. They vary is size from good to massive! Many have water connections on the pitch (but no waste) and are well shaded. Towards the beach there some pitches of about 90 sq mts which have a more open aspect and no water hook-ups. A further category of pitch has its own private toilet/shower facilities. These come in two sizes the smaller being about 90 sq mts and the larger 180 sq mts, again with good shade.
Electric connections, 10 amp, of the older continental style without the male earth pin so if you find reverse polarity the plug can just be reversed in the socket.
Toilet facilities are superb and are continuously cleaned by site staff. The toilets are seated, paper is provided but on individual rolls outside each cubical!

The site has extensive restaurant/takeaway/bar facilities.
Internet provision is by either fixed terminal or site wide WiFi which costs about €2 a day.
There is a large on site supermarket with a good range of products which should reduce the need for off site shopping expeditions.
The site has a lovely swimming pool complex as well as other sporting facilities and children’s play equipment.
The Spanish tend to eat and go to bars later rather than earlier in the evening so you should expect some noise, particularly at weekends, if on a pitch near the main road down from reception. Pitches situated further away are unlikely the be affected.
Camping Cheques are accepted in the low season.

No doubt the excellent beach will be the main draw of this site however there is lots to do within a relatively short radius of the site. Figueres is not far away and if you are looking for a surreal experience visit the Salvador Dali Museum in the town. The resort of Roses is just across the bay and short drive away. Near L’Escala are the Roman ruins of Empuries which is worth a visit. There are numerous shopping opportunities in the area including large supermarkets.

Date of visit mid September 2009.

Camping La Masia

I have stayed at La Masia at Blanes and was quite impressed with it. The site is large and flat and has a number of areas of different character inclucing specialist areas with shade for tents, then some statics and also some bungalos and a block of apartments.
Because of changes to the one-way system in Blanes it can be a bit tricky to drive to, but it is helped by having two entrances and at each there is someone to greet you and show you to a pitch. There are barriers at both entrances for security. I found reception very friendly and helpful.
There are a number of permanently pitched spanish caravans in amongst the tourers and they can be a bit noisy at weekends, I guess the site would be pretty lively in the high season, but of course we are talking about camping cheque so that is not relevant. A couple of the other sites located close by accept the camping card, but I thought that La Masia was the best.

The site is located on the outskirts of the town along with 3 others, but it is an easy walk in along the sea front then there are lots of shops, bars and a harbour.
It is possible to walk northwards along a coastal path to the very lively resort of Lloret and you can also get a bus there. The bus station is closer to the site than to the town centre and there you can buy a combined ticket that takes you by bus to the train station, then train to Barcelona.
I would not advise walking to the train station as it is quite far out of town and isolated. The train to Barcelona runs along the coast through a number of resorts, some of which look quite interesting. It is also possible to get a boat trip from the beach to nearby resorts. Tossa de Mar can be reached by both boat or bus and is well worth a visit.

The site has two nice pools and a couple of bars and a restuarant but there are lots of others nearby. It also has wi-fi access, but at a cost, the neighbouring site has free wi-fi and it is possible to use that without a password. There are lots of toilet blocks, all a slightly different character, but all clean and otherwise excellent.
They have a good shop, but again plenty nearby, including the adjacent campsite, but you would probably need to drive to a largish supermarket for a wider choice.

La Paz is probably the most beautifully located camp site I have ever stayed at and is split into 2 areas. The most sought after area is perched on the cliff overlooking two sandy coves. The other area, where they put most of the Brits, is situated in a small valley just behind the cliffs. On arriving and finding you haven’t got a sea view you’d probably be as disappointed as we were but fear not. The pitches on the cliffs have sea views but are also smaller and more exposed to the elements (this is Green Spain after all so expect frequent showers). The valley pitches are much bigger and offer more shelter from both rain, wind and sun. They also have the most brilliant showers and toilets which are actually carved out of the cliffs.

The camp site restaurant and bar is set on the cliff between the two coves and has magnificent views, especially at sunset. We ate there several times and the food is great and very reasonably priced - order the paella and they’ll make a special fuss of you!

Other facilities include a decent shop but no swimming pool which is unusual for Spain. The sea itself was pretty chilly and was practically too choppy to swim in but was good for body boarding and surfing.

La Paz is in a very quiet location and as such, there’s not really anywhere else in walking distance to visit or eat at. Llanes is about a ten minute drive away and is well worth a visit or two. It’s a bustling fishing village with some interesting architecture and many fine restaurants and bars. Cider is the local tipple and chorizo sausage features in many dishes along with delicious seafood.

Not far inland are the Picos de Europa and it’s worth a drive into the mountains. Don’t forget to bring a fleece as it can get quite cold and it might even be snowing!

To sum up - definitely worth a visit. Once you’ve tried this area of Spain you’ll be back for more. We have.

I thought I would drop you a line about the camp site we stopped at last summer in Ginnestar on the River Ebro.
It was the first time we had been to spain with our caravan.

The site is run by Tom & Linda, they are both very very friendly and most helpful. Tom took us fishing on the River Ebro and told us about other places to fish. He also has a Boat which he takes people fishing on. He took me and I caught a 55 kilo Cat fish, I was in the Angling Star (sheffield based) magazine with a picture of the fish.

The site is small but everything you need is there. The shower block is clean and there are facilities to barbaque and picnic.

The town is very typical traditional spanish, the locals are so friendly.

Tom & linda could not do enough for us. We did not want to come home. We are going back again this year. Dont get me wrong it is nothing outstanding, just basic but very nice if you want a quiet relaxing holiday with fishing thrown in.

I thought I would get in touch to let you know what my experience of camping Ebroasis has been.
I stayed on the site three times last year and spent more than three weeks in total driving around, sightseeing and fishing, while staying on this site.
I have booked to go back in May this year as Tom, Linda and their son have been very helpful with local advice, obtaining fishing licences (essential to be done in advance of a visit), and pointing us in the right direction as regards finding places of interest, swimming pools and places to eat.
I have also made friends with the local ex-pats who are a very friendly bunch and always up for telling of their experiences! Barbeques at the site are attended by the locals and stories swapped until the small hours.

The fishing is my particular interest and my experiences have been memorable, some of the best fishing for me has actually been from the bank at Toms own jetty, all species can be caught there at seemingly any time, I did in fact fish on Christmas day and caught several very nice Carp which had probably never seen a hook before (now all too rare in the UK).
Driving to all the famous Ebro fishing spots is very easy, Riba Roja half an hour away, Tivenys the same, Mequinenza a very picturesque two hour drive and the Delta at less than that, so you are in a good place to be based although my opinion is the fishing is best away from the crowds.

Flights to Reus can be very cheap, my flights arranged for this May have cost me a total of £3.98 + tax!!!! (tip for anglers book your tackle on as sporting goods before you fly, mine weighed forty kilos last time and included my tent, the cost is an each way fee of around £11.00!).Car hire is very cheap with a company called Sol Mar. They can be booked from a Spanish based website with English text at very low rates, a very good mapbook supplied, no extra charge for additional drivers, all cars with aircon and fully comp insurance included, (the others charge extra when picking up the car). For those who don’t drive, Reus is less than an hour from the site and if you talk to Tom nicely he may pick you up and drop you back by prior arrangement at a small cost. If boat fishing is of interest this too can be arranged by prior appointment.

I went for a one off holiday and have almost taken root, having gained new friends (thanks to the locals for a great New Years Eve !)

I stayed at this camp site from 26/04/07 to 01/05/07
There were 5 of us who had visted this site for the fishing, on a short (tenting) break.

We were meet by Tom the owner who runs the site on his own. He is very pleasant and knowledgeable of the area and the local hot spots to fish.
We pitched our tents amongst the olive trees, which were part of the acres of plum/peach/cherry orchards and grape vines.

This is a tranquil place with the river Ebro only 20 yards away and the wildlife was in abundance.
we hired a boat and also used tom’s boat to take us to the various hot spots to fish along the river, I’m not saying where as we are going back again soon :o).

Tom is a very willing host and took us to get fishing licences/fishing gear/bait, and directed where to shop for fresh food. He also supplied wood for the two large barbecues which we used every day, and in the late evening used as a central place to taste the local beer and wine.

The local village, Ginestar is approx 1/4 mile away from the site and we called there each morning for fresh bread and milk etc. We travelled to other villages for groceries which Tom then kept in his fridge until we required them.
we used the river and went downsteam one day to a very nice village on a bend in the river called Maravet and I would recommend everybody visits this village. there is a small ferry you can drive to by car, but going down by boat was special.

The facilities on this site:
hot - cold showers in a separate block. ladies and mens flush toilets. Washing machine/washing up area. Tables and benches for eating and 2 large barbecues for cooking. Ideal, what more do you need.
Camp Ebroasis is just a nice place in which to spend a few days away from the usual ’ratrace’ we all now live in.

If you have visited and like Castell Montgri then La Siesta is a good comparison, it caters much the same way for campers with shows, bars, takeaway, two pools etc.
The site is a wee bit hilly, but nowhere like Castell M. It has a "mound" in the centre and the pitches are terraced round this. The upper swimming pool is standard rectangular, the lower pool is a fancy shaped one near the underground disco-ette and bar. The stage for shows is near here also.
The bar and restaurant are on the upper level, another bar and takeaway are on the lower level, does snackies rather than meals, omelettes on rolls, burgers, that sort of thing.

It’s 500mtrs downhill to the beach/bay from the bottom entrance to site has been voted the most picturesque in Costa Brava, Dali had house there and lots of artistic types around and about in the village.
Out of camp site turn left about 15 mins walk to Llafranch, nice bars and restaurants, lovely wee resort, different character to Calella Palafrugells. If you’re going to Llafranch, eat at Leon’s bar, take left fork as you enter village, one street back from beach, nice unpretentious family restauarant, popular with locals.

The coastal path takes around 45 mins between resorts, it twists round various bays and coves. Tamariu is about another 45 mins walk, or ten in the car, different again, beautifully set off bay with loads of sea foody bars and eateries.
Out of top entrance turn left and 15 mins walk alongside the dual carriageway into Palafrugells town, bustling wee Spanish town, Sunday ISTR market, nice but not spectacular town, real people, mostly non-touristy bars and eateries in town square, Bar Penguin does nice lunch time snacks, some nice shops, off-licence sells lots of different malty whiskies.
Isles Medes is different kettle of fish. Classy-ish eco friendly site, good bar and restaurant, some entertainments, but not shows. Indoor and Outdoor polls, serviced pitches, large pitches, well laid out but the site is in countryside 2.5 km from Estartit town itself along some very country unlit roads. Site is flat and level, near a nature reserve. NO other bars within about 10 mins walk.

We found locating this site more than a little complicated, towing a caravan round and round La Coruna in the dark is not to be recommended. We were not the only ones to have this problem.

Approaching La Coruna on the autopista take the exit to the right sign posted Peajse and take the LC-173 across the bridge and follow for Santa Cruz. At the traffic lights in the centre of Santa Cruz turn right and follow the signs for the site, which is on the left in about 500mtrs. It is quite a tight turn into the entrance for larger outfits, with quite a downward slope. The exit requires care.

This really is a gem of a site, with well kept grass pitches, plenty of fresh water taps and rubbish bins located around the site and a spotlessly clean toilet block with unlimited hot water.

Electric hook-ups are 10amp, using standard three pin plugs as in the UK so no need for adaptors.

Site fees are €14.57 per night, electricity extra (just under €3)

The owners, Manolo and Victoria, have been in residence for about twenty years and during that time have brought back seeds from places such as Chile with the result that they have some trees not found anywhere else in Spain.

There is a high class restaurant on the site which is frequented by many people not camping or caravanning.

The laundry facilities are the best we have seen on any site anywhere, the washing being fully dry at the end of the operation.

Once the intricacies of locating the autopista are mastered the site is conveniently located exploring the north-west part of Galicia.

La Coruna is a very busy city with very good shopping centres, and many interesting sites and museums. The Torre de Hercules is claimed to be the oldest working lighthouse in the world. Getting into La Coruna is easy, but getting out can be hell.

This site is a short stay site for tourers, very soggy underfoot in the rain.

It appears to be used mainly by families who keep their vans on site for the season and stay every weekend.

Photos. Our pitch * View from the site

There are also a large number of pitches for tents and all pitches, both tent and van, are terraced and separated by hedges.

Facilities are basic, with two toilet blocks, one with normal type toilets and the other with continental (hole in the ground) type.

In season there is a bar and a shop for basic necessities, but the shop was not open when we were there.

Site fees are 12.77 Euros per night including electricity.

The nearest supermarket is at Mino which is about 10 minutes drive away. Mino also has a very good cyber-café which is open until late.

On arrival, if the pitch you choose or are allocated is difficult to access (possibly due to rain) the owner will site your van using his mini-tractor.

Although we stayed for a week because we were visiting friends in the area, I would not recommend the site as a choice venue. In season there are a number of superior sites in the area.

Our pitch * The site

The site at Santillana del Mar is an ideal venue as a starting point for an exploration of Northern Spain, or as a final stop before the ferry home. It is situated just north of the A67 Autovia to the west of Santander, and is approached from junction 16 onto 611. Take the 6316 after approx 2-3km and follow for Santillana.

Facilities at the site are excellent. The toilet block appeared to be brand new, with plenty of showers and washing facilities.

The laundry facilities are good, with the washer and drier requiring tokens obtainable from reception for 3 Euros each.

Electric hook-up is 5amps from a two pin outlet, so adaptors are required

The site fee is 17.58 euros per night, electricity extra. Credit cards are accepted, as is CCI

Other facilities include a swimming pool, miniature golf, tennis, restaurant and bar

There is a small SPAR supermarket which opens 8.30-12.30 and 4.30-8.30 daily, including Sunday. Ice-cream is obtained from the bar, where Juan-Carlos will probably spread his whole selection on the bar for you to make your choice. It beats any language barriers.

A very useful facility is the on-site cash machine which accepts all major cash and credit cards, and also allows you to choose which language you want.

One end of the site has a panoramic view over the rolling countryside, and this area tends to get rather crowded, (the continentals do seem to like being close together).

The location of the site is about 500mtrs outside the medieval town of Santillana del Mar, and so is ideally situated for exploring what is claimed to be the most picturesque small town in Spain. This may well be true, it really is a delightful place to visit with a number of very interesting museums and half timbered buildings.

English is spoken by the reception staff, but is very limited amongst the rest.

The site appeared to be a popular stopover for Dutch and German caravaners heading south and westwards to the Picos de Europa, and is about two hours from Bilbao, depending on the traffic and about forty-five minutes from Santander.

The nearby small town of Comillas is well worth visiting, being renowned for, among other attractions, El Capricho, a building designed by Gaudi and now used as a restaurant.

Torrelavega is the nearest town of any size and is a typical bustling place with a main plaza and various smaller ones where all the socialising takes place. There is a very good cyber café (not much café, but about thirty workstations) on the main plaza.

This is where the nearest proper supermarkets are situated, but the best of all is Hypercore in Santander, part of El Corte Inglese department store.

When we first arrived at this campsite we were a bit disappointed. It was right beside a main road (although it wasn’t too busy) and it was literally on the edge of the village - not the usual countryside location we’re used to. We were also surprised it wasn’t by the sea! It is after all called ‘del Mar’. Anyway, we had arrived late, so after finding a pitch as far from the road as we could, we had a nice meal at the campsite restaurant and went to our sleeping bags feeling grumpy (don’t call me grumpy! - Mrs Archie).

The next morning, after the usual bread and jams bought from the well-stocked campsite shop we set of to discover the local village. Our feelings of the night before couldn’t have been turned around faster! The village of Santillana del Mar is a beautiful medieval heritage site with cobbled streets, churches, restaurants, artisan shops, bars - everything you could wish for - just a five minute walk from our tent.

Mrs Archie likes to cook but I think she only cooked once and I only did one barbie as the local restaurants all offered an amazingly cheap ‘menu del dia’ which included 2-3 courses plus wine for about £6 (in 2003). We tried all sorts of local dishes and the boys were well catered for too.

The campsite itself had a decent, although busy, swimming pool, but we spent most days down the local beach which was a ten minute drive away. The beach was typical of this area - a lovely sandy cove with cliffs either side and a beach bar.

For days out, it&'146;s definitely worth a trip or two into the mountains. Get a map, put on your walking boots and go off the beaten track and you’ll discover some lovely mountain villages where you can stop for refreshments. Bring warm clothing if you go really high as it can get quite cold.

So there you have it. If you’re into sampling the local food and wine and like to enjoy a bit of culture (the boys’ favourite was the museum of torture - very nasty) then this is the campsite for you.

Castel Montgri - - - - - Second report below--- Fishing site
L’Estartit
Costa Brava
Spain

This site is situated by the small resort of L’Estartit, about 60 miles from Gerona.

It is a large site but is placed on the side of a mountain, which dominates the skyline. From the site, the views are simply superb as you look East to the Medas Isles basking in the bay, and to the South and West where mountains dominate and through a pair of binoculars small villages can be seen perching precariously.

The site itself has three swimming pools, one being the largest on the Costa Brava. This and the lower pool are mainly used by families, but the jewel of the site for me was La Basa. It is the third pool midway up the mountain and we made the journey twice. ( Closed in 2000 due to a landslide ) You seem to be walking endlessly up paths and steps, the views getting even better, the site being left far below. Panting and sweating, you mount the last few steps to meet a scene of outstanding beauty. A waterfall cascades down the mountainside and into the pool. A bar with frosted glasses of beer greets you. But first-things-first, drop the bags and towels, descend the steps to the pool and jump through the waterfall into an unheated pool. The cold invigorates and excites and then you realise the water simply slides off the edgeless pool and carries on its way. Paradise found!!!!!!!

There are many pitches and plentiful bars. It is very busy but we found it easy to escape the throng of the discos and karaoke’s.
Play areas for the kiddies and small paddling pools litter the site with a large area for the bat and ball.
There is a great restaurant serving traditional Spanish food, Pizzeria, Cinema, bouncy castle, shops - everything quite frankly.
A great site. We’re already talking of returning to Castel Montgris.

The Madcaravanner has also visited this site
...... and I have to agree with Carl that, although La Basa was closed (because of a landslide) the site is well laid out and we had a good end of season party.

I found some very good fishing at the next town, Torroella de Montgri, in the River Ter (Rio Ter) Just under the road bridge although some maps don’t show a bridge there I can assure you there is a bridge with a nice wier
There were Tench, Carp, and Pike as well as TONS of river run Mullet. The fishing was comfortable although not easy to access as it is down a steep path.
A word of warning beware of snakes - lots of vipers

The only thing we found wrong was that the sites bars were poorly organised and impersonal.
We found the roof top bar at the Saratoga bar/restaurant much more lively and orientated for the customer than the till with loads of competitions and good food.

Views of the site:
The swimming pool... The playground

The site is on hillside, in a pine forest as described in the book. Pitches are all terraced, but not all totally level.
Hook ups are 5 amp, continental plug, reverse polarity and some have no earth.

There is a supermarket just outside the gates open at 8:00 am until around 10:30 pm with no Siesta.
The campsite has a restaurant, bar and take-away.
Internet access is in 2 location’s (5 terminals) at €1 for 15 minutes.

Lot’s of campsite maintenance obvious, toilet / shower blocks cleaned twice a day (but cleaners on site ALL day).
Reception staff very good with good language grasp of 5 languages.

The site is very ecologically aware and campers are encouraged to separate waste for recycling (paper/glass/plasticised cartons/tins/batteries), they even have drinks can crushers around the site so no one drops them in the very numerous waste bins.

The beach is just a short walk (400m) down hill. The area has some good restaurants we particularly liked the All you can eat Chinese (€8.50 a head) almost outside the campsite gates and the Restaurant Solimar at the edge of the beach (bottle of house wine €4). Whilst the town of Pals is inland a couple of kilometres its well worth a visit.
Not far from L’Estartit and the fishing in the Rio Ter (light tackle needs at least 10lb line !!!! but when you get a nice mullet you thank your lucky stars that you used it - lots of rocks to snag you) and Scuba diving at the Isla Medes (EXPENSIVE they wanted total for 2 dives came to over £100)
