To Find Site:
From the A6 motorway take the Spiez/Kandersteg exit and follow signs to Kandersteg. At Frutigen take the Frutigendorf exit. Turn right into town over railway bridge. In about 500 metres watch out for campsite sign on side of Hotel Simplon, turn left here. The approach road is narrow with unsighted bends so proceed with caution, Camping Grassi is at the end of this road.

This delightful medium sized, rather rustique, campsite is set a short distance from the centre of Frutigen alongside the River Engstigen and surrounded by mountains. Although it looks as if the office/reception is at the front of the site, certainly out of season, you are asked to go to the main house and ring the bell. The owners are very welcoming and speak excellent English. Some pitches, all of a good size, are set in what was once an orchard and others further up the site in a more open aspect. Electric points (10amps) have CEE17 connectors. At the front of the site there is a well maintained toilet block with seated toilets and paper. The use of the washing machines must be the best value we have ever come across on a campsite! Alongside the toilet block is a communal area which includes a television room and a covered terrace. The site has recently installed a WiFi connection which is free to use, I found the best signal to be in the communal area. Out of season there is no food shop although it is only a relatively short walk into town. This site accepts the ACSI Card which offers a discount in the low season.

The opportunities for excursions from this site are almost endless. Spiez and Interlaken are not far away. In the other direction you can use the famous Lotschberg Tunnel (rail) from Kandersteg to take your car through the mountains. If you prefer not to venture too far from the site there are lots of walking opportunities. For shopping there is a very nice C0-OP supermarket right in the centre of town. Most of the fuel suppliers locally use automated machines which accept either debit/credit cards or notes (Swiss Francs or Euros’).

Date of visit June 2007.

This site was commended to us by a lady we met in Italy, this very often the case with us.

It is one of five camp sites to the west of Interlaken and they are so numbered on the sign posts, Manor Farm is number one and the farthest away.

The site is split into two parts, the main being adjacent to a lake called Thun, this is where most of the tourers go. The site is popular with the Brit’s.
They call the pitches plots, some being super plots with water and sewage outlets.
The electrics have three values 0.5, 4 and 6 amp (you get a coloured sticker to indicate what you have elected to pay). The E/L connection is via a Swiss three pin plug unique to the Swiss, you can rent one from reception.

The toilets are to a good standard with the hot water on timer switches.
There is a good shop and restaurant.

We appreciated the location in that we were able to cycle into Interlaken in about 20-30 minutes with cycle parking at the station.
From there we went on the guided tours of the Jungfrau and Schilthorn (007 revolving restaurant), we found that these guided tours worked out less money than doing your own thing.

There are two lakes served by steamers, lakes Thun and Brienzer.
It is a very good centre for walkers.

We found a bar at the top of the tallest hotel in Interlaken, you get a very good view of the hang gliders coming in to land!

Yes....the lady that commended it was absolutely right it is worth visiting.
It is a costly excursion, especially as you have to buy a vignette for the car and the caravan but on the other hand I recognise that it must cost a bomb to create and maintain all the tunnels.

Coming off the motorway, one gets unceremoniously deposited in Geneva and confronted with instant traffic dancing to the traffic light shuffle. We had taken the toll road from Calais to Geneva to get used to driving on the
wrong side of the road with moderate safety, but hadn’t counted on such an abrupt end to our stressless passage. Getting a glimpse of Lac Leman out of the corner of a right eye, we followed the traffic flow towards the water, too nervous to attempt any potentially fatal lane changing detraction. We ended up following the northern shore and, noting motorists seem to park on the footpaths, quickly joined them for a well earned respite, wiping beads of sweat from brow with clammy hands.

Just a couple of kilometres on, in total around 5 kilometres out of Geneva, we came across the village of Rolle and, just on its northern outskirts, spotted a dilapidated "camping" sign pointing down a lane on our right.
We didn’t expect much ... after all, it wasn’t even listed in the AA Camping and Caravanning Guide. But, as we found out during our time in Europe, the AA European Camping and Caravanning guide was about as useless as tits on a bull (sorry about that) and we found the Collins Road Atlas a zillion percent better.

The Rolle camping site is well located with pitches for around 150 - 200 vans or tents. If you can do without power, you get a lakeside site, which is brilliant in the extreme. We were met at reception by a very friendly English speaking young lady who, after relieving us of our £8 for our first nights stay, jumped on her bicycle and led us to our lakeside pitch. We parked in such a way as to make the most of the view across Lake Leman with Genevas fountain easily recognisable in the distance. This was a truly magical spot, enhanced by opportunistic black swans and ducks that made a b-line for any unguarded food ... and yeah, they do bite when they’re hungry. We sat on a nearby jetty, feet dangling in the water, surrounded by swans and ducks queuing up for any offering. Tenters would particularly appreciate the shade and privacy offered by the lakeside trees.

The toilet block was immaculately clean and the absence of coin operated hot water particularly acceptable. Have you ever noticed the coin slots are always out of reach of the shower and the hot water always runs out just as ya get soaped up? Here, you can indulge in a piping hot shower for as long as your fancy takes you. The toilet block is well located in the middle of the camping ground and no more than a 45 second walk from the furthest pitch. It is well lit at night, but I would recommend you carry a torch to avoid tripping over power leads if you take short cuts between the caravans.

The onsite shop/cafe was a little pricey, though well stocked, but the Rolle shopping village is only a two minute walk away. In the village you can obtain most necessities, but it is small so don’t expect a huge range or supermarket prices. There is also a rather nice pub which didn’t overcharge and has a rather friendly atmosphere.

Perhaps it was just the year we were there, but it was remarkably quiet and children astoundingly well behaved. Though obviously a family camping ground, it was quite uncanny how people respected each others wishes and, once past 10pm, everything seemed deathly hush. Personally, I think it was the tranquil surroundings that just had that effect on people. We saw registration plates from virtually every European country, as well as America, though ours was the only British registration plate. I got the distinct impression this camping ground relied on its reputation, rather than advertising, as many campers seemed to know the staff thus suggesting this wasn’t their first visit.

It may not be listed in the AA Guide, but on a scale of one to ten, I would rate Rolle a very definite 9 for spectacular scenery, cleanliness, friendliness and dammed good value and they’ll certainly see me again.

Camping Seeland
Kantonalstrasse
CH6204 Sempach
Switzerland

Phone: 0041 460 14 66

Date of visit: 14 June 2002.

Directions:
Leave the A2 Motorway at the Sempach sign and the site is signposted
Access to the site is easy. It is only ten minutes off the A2 motorway.
Camping cheques are accepted.

We used this site as a night halt on the journey south to Switzerland. Went for a night and could have stopped a month! The site is situated at the southern end of lake Sempach just on the outskirts of Sempach village. The site is spotlessly clean - but then so is Switzerland. There are a large proportion of static caravans on this site. The touring section is at the far end of the site.

Pitches are all on grass and level. However they are not large. Unusually you are pitched nose to tail rather than sideways on. This can make the entry and exit a bit of a push and pull. Toilet and shower facilities are immaculate and hot water plentiful and free. Watch out for different colour waste bags as the Swiss recycle everything! Also be aware that an adapter is need for electric connection that is available in reception for a deposit. The Swiss still have their own currency but if you only have a little they will accept 10 Euros as deposit.

The site is right on the edge of the lake for boating swimming fishing and other water sports. A large shop bar and restaurant and takeaway building behind reception caters for the housekeeping side of things. This is shared with a public area for access to the beach and lake.

The scenery is astounding. I sat in 30C heat with my bottle of Becks and all around me were snow-capped mountains! This is definitely a site to revisit and linger longer.

As we were passing through we did not have the opportunity to explore. However Sempach village must be visited. Lake Lucerne is about 30 minutes away if the full tourist bit is desired, although I have to say it disappointed us.

Travel tip: If you are intending to travel through Switzerland on the motorways you must display a vignette on the car and another on the caravan. This is effectively your "Toll". I would recommend you buy this in the UK because Swiss customs check on arrival in the country. This will save lengthy delays when entering the country. If you have not got one you have to go in the queue to purchase. When we drove straight through the queue was enormous and I understand waits of up to four hours are not uncommon.

Camping TCS - Morges
Le Petit Bois
CH1110 Morges
Switzerland

Tel: 021 801 12 70

To Find Site:
Leave Lausanne/Geneva motorway at Morges Ouest and follow signs to Morges (Centre Ville). At roundabout follow signs to campsite.

Perhaps we should start with the positives about this campsite. The major one is that it is situated very close to the shores of Lac Léman and it is only a short walk into the delightful town of Morges. The toilet blocks, whilst of older design, are well maintained with seated toilets and paper. There is a well stocked shop and adjacent restaurant. There is a WiFi facility via Swisscom, cost about £2 for 30minutes. The layout of the pitches are the downside. They are unusual in so far as the pitch will accept the caravan and awning but the car is parked in a marked bay on the road in front of the pitch. In total you get as much space as on any other campsite but they appear much more cramped so expect to get another van or camper parked only 3 feet away! If you crave privacy this might not be the site for you. Another downside for me was that about 50% of the pitches were taken up by permanently sited caravans (and motorhomes!) that take up every inch of their allotted space. Would I use the site again. Yes, but! Firstly I would make sure I arrived mid week. Secondly I would take more time to select my pitch and finally I would consider putting the van across the pitch rather than end in. This campsite accepts Camping Cheques.

As mentioned this site is in a superb location. Just minutes from the site entrance you can be walking along the flower lined promenades on the shore of Lac Léman. Alternatively the town of Morges is only a stroll away. If you can visit the Saturday Market, you will not find many better elsewhere for quality and interest of products offered for sale. The lake steamers call at Morges with lots of possibilities for excursions to different parts of the lake. There is a Co-Op supermarket not far from the campsite, although it is quite difficult to work out where it is.

Camping TCS - Solothurn

Fax: 032 621 89 39

E-mail; Via the web site
Web site: http://www.campingtcs.ch/solothurn

To Find Site:
From motorway follow signs for Zentrum/Biel. When you cross river keep left adjacent to river, watch out for signs for Stadium CIS and Swimmbad. Site is signed but poorly! Passing Sports Centre( interesting roof) and Swimmer bad on left the road bares road to the right towards some blocks of flats in the distance. At this point continue straight on and turn immediately left at the three flags. Site at bottom of road. Pull in on right hand side of road and go to reception.

This site, which borders the River Aare, has about 160 pitches which vary in size but most are at least 90/100 sq metres, some larger. It is of fairly open aspect with lots of trees but these have not reached maturity so only provide a minimum amount of shade. This campsite, in common with lots of other Swiss and German sites has a number of permanently based caravans, its a shame that the ones nearest reception are pretty scruffy. In the same building as the reception is a small shop where bread can be ordered. There is also a computer which can be used to access the internet. In this area is a small children’s playground. Over looking the river is a popular restaurant which seems to attract most of its custom from the surrounding area. There are two lots of toilet facilities, one in the main reception block and another separate one more to the middle of the site. Both are really superb in quality and in the way they are looked after. Electric supply is 13 amps, via CEE17 plugs. Drinking water is supplied either from the toilet block areas or at the far end of the site via stand taps. The internet can also be accessed from a WiFi point operated by Swisscom, open Internet Explorer and follow instructions.

The town of Solothurn is walk able. It has two particularly fine churches which are worth exploring. If you have bicycles with you there are many opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside. For shopping there is a small Co-Op supermarket not far from the site and a larger Migros one a little further away.
