Page 148. CC handbook

Date of visit: May 2003.

Directions
At the junction of the A1 A57 and A614 turn onto the A614. In about half a mile turn right through the stone arch. In 1 mile turn right. Site is on left in 50 yards.

This site was refurbished last year and it is reflected in the standards. Situated in the Clumber Estate it is a haven of tranquillity. Everything about it is standard CC including the pitches on either hard standing or grass. There are two toilet blocks both in spotless condition. The wardens are actually the friendliest I have ever come across.

The site is fairly large at 180+ pitches. My visit was the week before the May Day holiday so it was fairly quiet until later in the week. I was told that the perimeters of the site could be a bit eerie when quiet because the woodlands border the site. There is a perimeter fence now all around the site. The Clumber estate is 4000 acres+ of woodland and lakes and parkland. The visitor centre has a restaurant that is probably about a mile away. Reception stocks basics and fresh bread is delivered three times a week. Papers can also be ordered here. Worksop is about 5 miles away.

Apart from Clumber itself the Sherwood Forest visitor centre is ten minutes away. Chesterfield and Sheffield are also easy drives.

A couple of warnings. TV reception is non-existent. There is access to digital via the electric bollards. However if you have no lead they are available in reception for £10. They are actually about 10 metres in length so I honestly do not know if this is a bit steep. The other problem [or advantage] is that mobile phone reception is non-existent when you are in the park.

There are several entrances into the park but as most of the roads are closed at night one should only use the directions given in the club book.

Note for tent campers.
The club do not permit tent campers. However whilst on my visit I took the opportunity to take a quick look at the Caravanning & Camping Club site in Clumber. This is in the old kitchen garden of the estate. Access looks tight for caravans but there are 55 pitches specifically for tent campers with all the usual facilities

Milestone Caravan Park (CC affiliated) Site --- Second report below--- Fishing site
Great North Road
Cromwell
Newark
Nottinghamshire
NG23 6JE

Tel: 01636 821 244

Directions
From North or South: leave A1 at the sign for Cromwell and the Dolls Museum. The site is well signed.

This small site [60 pitches] is a Managed under Contract [MUC] site for the Caravan Club. It is situated directly off the A1 at the northern end of the village of Cromwell. There is no intrusive traffic noise considering the proximity to the Great North Road. Pitching is very straightforward on this level site.

The site is basically divided in two - separated by hedging. The top field is open with a gravel road running round it. Pitches are in the centre and around the perimeter. There are some hard standings in this area. The other area near the entrance and reception is divided into smaller areas again separated by hedging and shrubs. This gives a feeling of privacy but not of being hemmed in. there are hard standings in this area also.

The ex-club wardens keep the whole site in immaculate condition. Plants and shrubs help to maintain the ambience. The wardens are extremely helpful and friendly. Reception has details of attractions in the area. Newark is only five miles away. Nottingham Clumber and Sherwood Forest are nearby and Lincoln and Grantham are also within easy reach. There is a Dolls Museum in Cromwell at the other end of the village. The off site dog walk is also off the public highway. There are trout fishing lakes adjacent to the site. The site owner is also in the process of excavating his own lakes next to the site.

The village shop is 150 yards walk and is one of those rare genuine local village shops that stocks everything. You can order the papers you require for your stay.

There is no pub or restaurant in Cromwell village but there are several good eating places in the surrounding tiny villages. I can especially recommend the one in Norwell village.

Toilet facilities are maintained to club standards and although not a large block I never had to wait for the shower on my visit which was over a bank holiday weekend when the site was full.

Although full the site never felt crowded. It was still fairly quiet. There is no separate play area for children. Those with young families may prefer the Club site at Clumber Park. As this site is adjacent to the A1 it will be used as a stop over by many but it is worthy of a longer visit. I had a very lazy weekend but will definitely return. I might even make into Newark next time.

Site visited. October 2002

I would agree with all the comments made in the original report & thoroughly enjoyed my visit..........just three up-dates;

Non-members are allowed on site.

The adjoining Cromwell Lake is no longer a Trout lake it has been re-stocked with Carp and appears very popular.

The on-site small lake has now been completed and stocked with a variety of coarse fish - whilst I was watching one chap pulled out a 6lb.Tench.

To find site:- Milestone is situated close to the A1 Trunk Road. Heading north from Newark watch out for sign to Cromwell and Norwell and take slip road just before Little Chef. Continue through Cromwell and site is on the left.

Milestone Caravan Park is a Caravan Club affiliated site. Bookings must be made direct to the campsite, a £10 deposit is asked for. Currently they only accept payment by cash or cheque but they are hoping to take payment by debit card soon.
The site is open all year and has about 100 pitches, most of which are on gravel hardstandings, there are also a few grass pitches, however the site does not accept tents.
The site also offers seasonal pitches and storage. On site there are some park home style cabins.

There are two heated toilet blocks both to a very high standard with larger than average toilet and shower cubicles.
Electric points are close to each pitch and water and waste points are dotted around the site although some pitches seem a long way from the closest service point.
I thought this campsite has some nice landscaping touches which counter balances its open aspect. There is some noise from the A1 and the not to distant main railway line but to be fair this was hardly discernable inside the caravan.
There are no play facilities for children and ball games are not allowed.

Milestone has a fishing lake and day tickets are available for £3 a day. There are more fishing opportunities locally.

This campsite would make an ideal staging post between the South and Newcastle/Scotland. We used the site to visit the well know Lincoln Christmas Market.
Newark is only a few miles away for either to visit in its own right or shopping. There is a Waitrose supermarket situated next to the railway station.

Date of visit December 2007.

John and Dorothy Anderson

Clean tidy site, pitches not tremendously well marked but sited personally by the helpful warden/owner. Some hard standing. Key operated barrier (£5 returnable deposit).

Clean, centrally heated shower blocks but only 2 showers per sex. Disabled facilities including shower (I’m unable to comment on the standard of these as I am not familiar with disabled requirements).

Local eateries including Fish & Chips, Chinese and various pubs about 1.3 miles from site.

We had 4 short power cuts in the 3 days we were there, apparently someone had a domestic kettle!

Reasonably priced but still charging separately for electricity (not allowed now I thought). Only £11 per night (no awning) when we stayed over Easter 2004.

Outfit 7.50 per night
EHU 1.60 per night
Showers .20 per 10 mins

This site is on the edge of Worksop town centre and is more locally known as Worksop Cricket Club. The site is bordered on one side by the cricket field and on the other by the Chesterfield canal, now open.

The site, which is nicely landscaped and sheltered, is open all year, has 65 pitches mainly on hard standing, nearly all with EHU’s. (16amp).
Recently extended, the new pitches are a more generous size than the pitches around the entrance. In fact some of them are big enough for two vans not one.
The toilet block is not new but has modern fittings and was spotlessly clean, however with only two showers in the gents washroom, things could be a bit pushed when the site is busy, which, by the way, is most weekends. Booking is advised.

There is no shop on site but this is not necessary because the town centre is only 3 minutes walk, Markets on Wed. and Sat. The cricket club, which has a good selection of beers, welcomes site visitors and also has 2 squash courts.

Other hostelries and restaurants are plentiful in the town.

Fishing is available in season on the adjacent canal and also a new coarse fishing lake is available on the opposite side of the canal to the site. There are 3 golf clubs in Worksop.

The route into the site is sign-posted by brown caravan signs from the A57 but can prove a little tricky because of parked cars in the terraced streets that you have to use. But don’t let that put you off, being so close to the town doesn’t detracted from the site at all. In fact it’s quite a peaceful oasis in such a position.

Nearby attractions include:
Clumber Park, 3 miles, a must for cyclists
Rufford Abbey Country Park
Sherwood Forest visitor centre with The Major Oak
and Legend of Robin Hood.
Creswell Crags (Earliest signs of man in the UK)
Meadowhall Shopping Centre. 25 mins.
Yorkshire Retail Outlet. 25 mins.

All in all a splendid site for either the weekend or longer. Or an overnight stop from either the M1 or A1

Regards

We visit on the Riverside Caravan Park every year and we find it a very clean, lovely and quiet site with very friendly people.
There are very helpful people working there. The toilets are immaculate with fresh flowers put in them every day and with the town center only a few minutes away, we couldn’t ask for a better camp site.

We would recomend this site to all !!!!

Site visited May 2002

The website for this campsite portrays a beautiful site which accommodates for everyone. Unfortunately this was not our experience.

We visited early in the season and although the site was not full we were put into the rally field. There didn’t appear to be any reason for this. The field was bumpy and uncut and we felt alienated from the rest of the site. There was a shop which provided basic food and newspapers but didn’t sell any camping equipment. The staff seemed friendly enough and tried to help although meeting their guests needs didn’t seem top of their agenda.

There was a park for the children on the edge of the field. The website raves about this fantastic flying fox, but in reality it wasn’t very big and you landed in a deep muddy puddle so it couldn’t be played on anyway.

The toilet blocks were very basic, they had a very tired feel about them and were cold. The showers were below standard and I wouldn’t allow any of my family to use them. As far as the chemical waste point is concerned it was a joke. It was exposed, out in the open and was just a toilet bowl sunk into the ground with a cistern above to flush after use. As you can imagine this was disgusting and filthy. The whole area was dirty and stank.

Overall I would say think carefully before visiting this site. If you are visiting the Nottingham area, which really is a lovely place I am sure there are far better sites to stay on.

A non commercial site with all grass pitches, no electric hook up yet, but the owner, Mr John says he hopes to put them in next year.

There are toilets and showers (red hot too!), fresh clean water, a washing room with twin tub and indoor drying.

Grass is very short and the site is very!! clean and tidy.

Lincoln is 1/4 hour away, and Mr John provided us with enough places to visit within 1 hours drive for a month.
Some of the local attractions and walks are: Sundown Pets Garden, World of Robin Hood, Lincoln, Doddington Hall, Leverton Windmill, and even a Japanease Garden are all nearby.

For those that fish there is over 1 mile of private river fishing (Free Too)

Very worthwhile visit, mainly a rally venue I think with barn and meeting room, definatly a "Best Kept Secret Site"!

Directions:
10 Minutes from A1 Markham Moor, Follow A57 toward Lincoln, 1 Mile Before Dunham Toll Bridge, follow signs to Laneham, go through village and down the side of the river, last farm on right hand side.

We Arrived before 10am set up and had a cup of tea.

Paid for 5 nights - £40. (£8 a night BT 2 people it’s £10 a night).

The site does a really good visitor pack, telling visitors where to go and what to see. Also for those amongst us who may need emergency medical attention it gives you the map reference for the air ambulance to find you, as it’s too far by road for an ordinary one.

The main field. (photo)
Most pitches (there are 25) around edge of field appear to be seasonal lets, but 16 are centrally placed in the field. These are free and open to the wind but even though it was windy whilst there it was not too bad.

My pitch. (photo)
Electric is 16amp and each pylon has water too. Very Eco friendly site.

The site owners REQUIRES ALL rubbish to be sorted (separate bins for Glass, Plastic, Metal, Paper, Veg, kitchen waste and ordinary rubbish).

The farm is still a working farm and stables with Show jumping horses (photo) being bred and trained.

The nearest pub is The Ferry Boat Inn, which is a very pleasant amble of about 10 minutes by the river path. I stopped at the Ferry Boat for a pint of Bomber County (a fruity tasting real ale at 4.7%) quite a few times, it was always popular and they serve good food I’m reliably informed by the local Fishing Bailiff.

Fishing:
The Site advertises 1 mile of Free Fishing...there is - but access to the bank side is difficult except in one place if you are disabled like me.

Fished the Ferry Boat AC stretch peg 37, (photo) - day ticket £2.50.
Pegs go from Trentfield farm to the Sailing club field, but there are some stretches that are not available (photo) to day tickets.

Dunham Bridge - Day ticket £3.50 Book £20 Concessions £7, But the book covers a lot of fishing so is worth the cost.

We went to Gainsborough found a tackle shop, we also found out that the Trent is free there BUT access is difficult.

We left one night early as I’d forgotten about the tidal bore on the Trent at Full moon which this time was especially strong and totally ruined the fishing. The site very kindly refunded my pitch fee.
I was very impressed as I know of other sites where you would just get a shrug of the shoulders to say it’s more than my jobsworth.

I have just returned from a visit to the site to assess the conditions.

Unfortunately what I found was not good. The site is quite remote, located down a signal track road which is adjacent to the river Trent. I was confronted with a large flood. This wasn’t just a road under water but a river well and truly over its banks. The tide marks did show the flood was receding but any appreciable rain over the next week will alter that. I took the bull by the horns and drove through (successfully) and then onto the site. Just to give you an insight to the water level if you look at the site web page it shows the Trent and two seats. I could see the seats but just the top part.

In my opinion the site itself does not live up to the description on their web site. However the field does appear to be well drained. There were signs of weather damage by the deep ruts at the field entrance but there didn’t appear to be any sogginess on the pitches themselves and although the grass was longish they were in good condition. However the rally field entrance was completely under water. There were vans on site and attended, but these appeared to be there on a permanent basis. Whether any vans had been there this weekend I don’t know. At the time of my visit. 3.30pm the office was closed and there didn’t appear to be anybody about. The site is only small so the showers etc should cope quite easily. These were old and dark but clean.
All in all not a good impression but then the conditions weren’t favourable. Because of the distance some of your have to travel if you have any doubts then I suggest you speak to the site direct.

Harry Burrows. CLIC. August 2007

Editor note About the time Harry would have visited this site we were all suffering from the amount of rain that had fallen, especially those living and working in close proximity to our rivers. I would welcome comments from anyone living close to this site to pass them onto me. Things may well be different now we have enjoyed brighter weather (18/08/07)

Site visited July 2007

Site is beside the river Trent, although you cannot see the river from the camping areas. The site is overlooked by a power station so maybe not the most attractive view.

Pitches are on field grass rather than lawn, no hardstanding pitches available. Electric is available. Facilities block is at entrance to site - not posh but clean, in good working order and kept stocked.
Recycling facilities. Owner was friendly.

This site like so many others this year was suffering a bit from the weather (floods were still an issue when we went) - pitches were a bit soggy but having said that we got the motorhome off without problem, so.........
....Would we go back? Maybe, if there was a meet or rally held here that we wanted to attend. Other than that probably not (nothing wrong with it, just didn’t grab me as one I must return to).
