CCC Big Sites Book ref. 137/130

Mr. J. Turley

When we went (August ’99) we were still using the frame tent, not the folding camper we now have (just so you know, I wasn’t assessing it from the caravan point of view....)

Site is beside a stream/small river, which all the children seemed to thoroughly enjoy playing in, swinging over etc.
There were a couple of goats around when we were there.

Wardens were very nice and helpful. Site has a shop stocking a fair selection of basics. They have camping gas. There is a play area for children.

There are some static vans, which are in a separate area. Electric hook-ups are available for touring vans.
They froze ice packs for us on a regular basis, something like 10p a time, I think.
I seem to remember some people complaining about radio/tv reception....

The loos/washrooms/showers were clean, well-lit and well-maintained rather than flash - there were fresh flowers, which I liked. 20p needed for showers, but that gave long enough for a decent shower. Hot air hand dryers. Dishwashing area, washing machine and tumble drier. Assorted caravan/camping and other mags available for loan, if you run out of reading material.

There was a pub at the end of the drive, but I think that only opened some nights and wasn’t overly populated when we were there. They did bar meals and the staff were friendly. Other than that we needed the car to get to shops/pubs.

Good area for walkers.

We had a good holiday, and no complaints about the site at all, but it didn’t grab me as one I simply must go back to.

Mr. J. Turley

Slightly difficult entry to site squeezing past pub - don’t call first!!

Nice site on the banks of the river East Onney.

Approach via B road from Shrewsbury (no problems except acute turn in to site - use pub car park) or long drive via Church Stretton - both approaches well signed.
River flooded site whilst we were there but only flash flood and ran off quickly.

Friendly staff, small but adequate shop and good toilets.

Guide price UKP9.25 per night.

It has come to our notice that the ’Inn On The Green’ pub is next door to this site.
This pub is being refurbished and will be able to provide meals, good beer and accomodation, it will be a friendly, comfy family pub, children will be welcome. We hope it will provide an additional facility to support the popular Green Caravan site, it will be open all day during the summer season.

Shrewsbury, Onslow Park, Vintage Steam Rally

August Bank Holiday Open Rally: Onslow Park, about 2 miles W of Shrewsbury, Shropshire on the Welshpool road.

For anyone interested in all sorts of steam, traction and vintage vehicles and engines, this is for you.
This annual event is organised by the Shropshire Steam and Vintage Engine fraternity and is held in the extensive Oslow Park. Many hundreds of exhibitors roll in on Friday and Saturday as do the hundreds of caravanners and campers. On Saturday a free vintage bus service operates between the Park and Shrewsbury throughout the day.

The event opens to the public on Sunday and Monday and is attended by vast numbers of people.
Vintage agricultural and other heavy steam powered machinery was demonstrated throughout the two day event. There were also miniature working models, vintage commercial vehicles, motor bikes, bicycles, and a working fun fair.
A large area of trade stands, an area of car bits for sale, a large arts and crafts marquee, country craft demos and an amazing number and variety of fast food stalls all added to the interest and atmosphere. There was also a beer tent, a good caravan accessory stand where gas cylinders were also available.

People wishing to caravan or camp can just turn up on the Friday. Camping facilites are obviously limited though there were lots of portable loos and rubbish bins on site (both emptied daily). There were a few fresh water points and a chemical disposal point. It all seemed very well organised.

The cost this year (1999) was in the region of £5.50 per unit per night. It is advisable to make a booking for groups who want adjacent pitches so that areas may be reserved

Open all year

This site is situated on the outskirts of Shrewsbury. It is easy to get to and has the advantage of being nest door to the park and ride so it is very convenient for visiting Shrewsbury. Also convenient for Shropshire area.

It is a relatively new site owned by Morris leisure. This company also own Stanmore Hall, the CC MUC. It was designed from a bare field site so the layout is ideal.

The pitches come in all varieties, from a grass camping area for tents only to the hard standing serviced pitch with individual water, waste, electric point and TV hook up with sky.
Unfortunately the planners [or builders] did not realise that caravanners need water points close by. These are built into the electric bollards and if you are using a direct mains hook up rather than aqua roll you need to borrow a long extension reel from the warden! I understand this oversight is going to be corrected.

The site has been modelled on club lines so the look will be familiar. The toilet block is extremely clean. The shop is well stocked and even has a caravan accessory department.

There is a seperate quot;Adult only" section on this site. It is well away from the play area so should provide a "brat free zone" for those who wish it.

My visit to this site was in September and was the result of winning a draw in one of the magazines. My "prize" was three nights and we stayed a fourth.
I felt that the cost for that one night [£13.94 after a discount for something] was rather expensive. Especially as we then went to High Onn for four nights and all that only cost £21.80!

Perhaps the site is a bit young but it seemed to have no ambience. In fairness it was quiet and the weather was atrocious for most of the time but .....

We went to Oxon Hall for a long weekend at the end of August 2006.
We were very impressed. I have to say one of the best sites we have been to in recent years although a bit pricey.
The staff are excellent and the site is beautifully well kept. One could not ask for more and there is agreat pub not 200 yards from the entrance.
The only downside was that the access barriers dont work after 11pm for security reasons but all in all Highly recommended

Opening Dates: April to September

A long, thin, no facilities site with 71 pitches, 16 of which are hardstanding. It is one of the cheaper flat-rate CC sites - this year it was £9 a night.

The land was previously part of a railway line/station, I suspect it was a victim of Beeching, and some signs of its past still remain. It's not exactly a pretty site but managed to be very peaceful and relaxing despite the B-road just outside - didn't find road noise a problem.

We went there in September 2010 looking for a peaceful site to crash out and do not a lot - it fitted the bill perfectly and I would be happy to use it again. That does mean, however, that I can offer no comment at all on attractions and facilities in the surrounding area, because we didn't leave the site in the 3 days we were there!

Directions:
Leave M54 at junction 4 and follow A464 and then A442 towards Kidderminster. After approximately three miles follow local signs for Madely and Tweedale, then follow the brown international caravan signs, which take you to the site.

Severn Gorge is about 3 miles south of Telford. It is a level and sheltered site with all amenities and convenient for many attractions in the area such as Ironbridge Telford Severn Valley Railway Bridgnorth Cosford Aerospace Museum Weston Park and many others.

Pitches are either hard standing or grass depending on personal preference. The grass areas are also suitable for tents. One pitching area is open and overlooks a landscaped open area and the other is an avenue with grass on one side and hard standing on the other and is divided by a hedge. There are numerous water points and rubbish disposal bins around the site that has a comfortable well kept air about it.

The toilet block is centrally heated and kept extremely clean at all times. There is a separate disabled toilet and shower. Laundry and dish washing facilities are also provided along with a clothes drying area. The children’s play area is set away from pitching areas. The small shop attached to reception provides basics and the town of Madely is a short walk away. Papers can be ordered from reception. Two pubs within 300 yards serve food. There is a bus stop outside the site gates. Although opposite an industrial estate do not be put off as the longish drive takes you through a wood and there is no sign of it on the site.

The landscaped area to one side is part of the site and there is a fishing lake at the foot [£2 per day I understand]. There is also a pitch and putt and picnic area. The brochure also offers mountain bike hire.

This site is open all year. I understand from chatting with the very helpful wardens that the site has recently been sold and the new owner is going to carry out an improvement program. Certainly the hard standings at the top of the site were obviously new. Apparently these pitches were unusable in very wet weather. The top of the site can also be booked for rallies.

I found this site whilst trying to find somewhere in the direct locality convenient for visiting friends. However in an area of the country which seems to be short of sites or CL’s - never mind good ones - this is a welcome addition to my list of "will return to" sites.

This is a Managed Under Contract site in the grounds of a 19th century mansion just to the east of the Shropshire town of Bridgnorth. Its open all year round and we visited at the end of February 2003.

The site is well screened from the main road and you gain entry and exit through security barriers. The grounds, which are immaculately maintained and beautifully landscaped with a mixture of grass and hardstanding pitches, are spacious and you’ll find friendly ducks as well as the odd peacock wandering around.

There is an "adults only" area tucked away atthe southwest corner, screened from the rest of the site by a large bank.
If you are not an adult there is a play area with the usual stuff to keep the kids amused while they’re not feeding the ducks. A dog walk takes you along the southern boundary of the site while the focal point of whole place is a 2 acre lake with and adjacent toilet block, shop etc.

Super-pitches sited together on the opposite side of the lake to the amenities are large and have mains water and drainage points as well as satellite TV. There are additional hard-standings near the site exit, but these don’t have the super-pitch facilities.

Toilets are immaculately kept and the site does have the additional benefit of a large conservatory overlooking the lake. The shop stocks the usual range of groceries but has the additional benefit of being licensed.

Visited December 2006

Private site but linked with the caravan club - you don’t need to be a member to stay but it is cheaper if you are.

This was our second visit to this site as it provides a convenient base in winter for visiting a friend. We tend to use it in winter only, as it is fairly expensive during the summer months. We can find cheaper sites in summer that are nearer our friend! But in winter, this site is open when others aren’t, it has hardstanding and the facilities are nicely heated!! Definitely puts it ahead on points and I fully expect to return again.

With the Caravan Club discount it cost us just over £15 a night for 2 adults and motorhome on a standard pitch. Pitches were good size but not quite level - nothing the ramps wouldn’t sort out though. Staff were friendly.
They have super pitches with water connection and extra TV channels available if required - I think it was something like £3 a night extra. Super pitches tend to be beside the pond (they call it a lake but it isn’t very big....)

There is an adults only area if required - specify this when booking.

Down Inn the other side of Bridgnorth does good carvery.
