To Find Site:
From Banbury follow A423 towards Southam. In about 5 miles, immediately past the turning for Mollington Village take next turning to the left into campsite.

This is a pleasant little campsite situated on the edge of the village of Mollington which is about 5 miles north of Banbury. Reception is at the farmhouse, which is on the left just up from the entrance. If the site owner is not available at reception alternative instructions are posted on the door

The site is split into four sections, two areas for caravans and one for tents plus a rally field. In one section all pitches have hardstandings, although the gravel sections are only wide enough to take the caravan. Awnings and car have to sit on the grass. The other caravan section is all on grass.
The site has a slight slope from the rally field down to the entrance so so side to side levelling might be required. There are water taps in all sections. Electrics are available in the two caravan sections. There seem to be a number of permanent caravans on site. Near the site entrance is a good quality toilet block with ramp access for wheelchairs. Chemical toilet disposal and rubbish are situated behind the toilet block. The showers are very large but are not divided so you might have to be careful where you put your dry clothes! I thought the charge per night of £9, including electrics, was very reasonable, awnings are £1 extra a night.
There are no play facilities for children although I am sure they could make use of the rally field if it was not occupied.

This is a good site for a weekend, or longer. There is a pub in the village which is just a short stroll away. The Oxford Canal is only a couple of miles away at Cropredy. The nearest shop is in Cropredy but for more serious food shopping there is a Tesco on the outskirts of Banbury.

Tel: 012950 750 289

To find Site:
From either north or south on A423, Banbury to Southam Road, take road to Great Bourton and site is just by the sign for the village.

Barnstones is a fairly compact open all year campsite a couple of miles north of Banbury. Nearly all pitches in the main area are on gravel hardstandings although these are not quite wide enough to take both a caravan and awning. They are set out in two squares behind reception with lots of mature trees surrounding the site.
Each pitch has a section of hardstanding in front of the pitch where vehicles are parked. Whilst the pitches seem to be of a good size this style of parking can give a crowded feel. Some pitches are fully serviced with water, waste, electrics and a TV hook-up (not digital).

There is a good quality toilet block which is heated and is well looked after. In addition to the main pitching areas is a large rally field which also doubles up as extra pitching should there not be a rally on a particular weekend. It is mainly grass but has a very wide road which allows caravans/motorhomes to park on the road if weather conditions would make it difficult to use the grass. The rally site has electric points a fresh water supply. The rally field is nearer the A423 so there will be road some noise but mainly at rush hour times.

For the kids there is a nice adventure style play area hedged off from the main camping areas. There is also a dedicated dog walk area.

We thought this campsite was good value but felt there were too many permanently sited caravans some of which looked past their best which is a shame as the site offers some really good facilities. Date of visit October 2007.

The village of Great Bourton is immediately outside the site and its only a short walk to the pub.
The Oxford Canal is only a short distance away.
Banbury is a nice town with a good shopping centre.
There is a Tesco supermarket on the way into Banbury.
On the B4100, which runs on the other side of the M40 to the A423, is a caravan dealer with a good accessory shop and the National Herb Centre.

One is rubbing shoulders with Aristocracy here as this site is actually on the Blenheim Estate.
It is a "Members only" Caravan Club site. Convenient for Bladon Church [Winston Churchill’s grave] and of course Blenheim Palace and Woodstock. Oxford and the Cotswolds are not far away either.
There is both grass and hard standing pitches. The site is mostly level and there are trees scattered around the site. Usual high standard club facilities.
Shops are about three-quarters of a mile away and Woodstock is only a short walk.

Date of visit 4th to 8th September 2000

A fairly typical CC site, members only, but you can join at the site.

About a hundred pitches, some hard standing. All pitches are a good size, 11m square and mostly level, although one or two of the hard standings seem a mite smaller than this with a bit of a slope.

There’s one facilities block, to conventional CC standards (scrupulously clean but so little room in the shower cubicles that keeping dry after the shower is impossible [the floor of the "dry" half drains too slowly so you dress standing in puddles]).

You can order papers and buy milk and gas from the reception, and there’s a small Co-op supermarket open till late half-a-mile away in Woodstock.

The site is next to the exit from Blenheim palace, but the entrance is over a mile. There’s an enclosed small dog run, is long as a 3ft wall presents your dog with an insurmountable obstruction. Bladon, with Churchill’s grave, is a half-mile walk from the dog run.

TV reception is variable, some pitches OK with a Status, some needing the TV feed available from the hook-up pillars, at 55p per night, and bring your own cable. Mobile phone reception seems OK (we use Orange, had a full-strength signal.

Oxford is 7 miles away, and the easiest way to get there is to take the car to the Peartree service area at the junction of the A34 and A44, and use the park and ride. If you are unfortunate enough to need an orange badge, Oxford will welcome your car right into the centre (I even saw dedicated bays in "The High")

There’s not too much else within walking distance from the site, but it makes a good base for Oxford or the more easterly Cotswolds.

The site is fairly quiet, except for the traffic noise on the side near the A44.

We have stayed at this members only site a couple of times for weekends. There are a mixture of pitches the majority being on grass but there are some hardstandings. Some parts of the site have a slight slope. The toilet block, well up to usual CC standards divides the site. Some road noise from the A44 might be experienced.

The site is only a short walk from Blenheim Palace and even if you only pay to go into the grounds you will find well worth it. The charming town of Woodstock is also an easy walk, there are plenty of pubs and restaurants as well as takeaways. Winston Churchill is buried at Bladon Church which is only a short distance from the site. Further a field is Oxford and the Cotswolds.

Bladon Chains CC Site--- Sixth report below
Bladon Road
Woodstock
Oxfordshire
OX20 1PT

Tel: 01993 812 390

Web site: www.thecaravanclub.co.uk

We recently visited the Caravan Club site at Bladon Chains (we are members) and would agree much of the previous comments about the layout of the site (single toilet/shower block, mixed grass and some all weather hard standings on chippings, slight slopings, etc.) But we thought that it was attractive - mature trees screening the short minor road leading to the entrance, the large, well drained grass areas and the fields of the Blenheim estate beyond and the friendly and helpful Wardens look after everything very well.

The Toilet block is situated in the larger section (pitches 1 to 56), to the right of the entrance , with outside service points, plus two more Caravan Club standard SP’s on that field. The reception is immediately in front of the entrance, with a Motorhome waste disposal and another SP just in front. The reception doubles as a small shop, doing papers to order only, usual Aqua Kem fluids, gas, milk, ice cream, soft drinks, sweets, poster cards and TV booster cables plus a few caravan accessories. The toilets, throughout our stay in June 2005 when the site averaged almost full, were spotlessly clean and all the all the male/female toilets and showers worked perfectly and drained properly. (Any faults found on Club sites should be reported to the Warden immediately for perusal). Service points were kept clean and tidy, grass mowed regularly, waste bins emptied regularly and power hook up points have TV plugs. It is a lovely site! ...

...Apart from the intrusive noise from the nearby A44 at the junction with the A4095 and the fact that the "minor road" leading to the site entrance, from the A4095 (No Entry from the N on A44) is actually a slip road, heavily used by traffic coming off the A4095, to reach the A44 - avoiding the roundabout junction. It is also a signed to Coach park, all along the Eastern boundary wall of the site and some lorries also use it. (Mostly used by tour vehicles while their passengers visit Churchill’s grave in Bladon) We found that usage was less obvious - but what was noticeable was the lunatic commuter cars and skip lorries speeding through from 5am (!) and the "boy racer" cars and bikes with illegally noisy exhaust systems and stereos (so a bit like any town home then!) Plus, the aircraft noise from the nearby Oxford Airport & flying school and Brize Norton RAF jets and noisy helicopters and the nearby Ambulance depot opposite the Airport - all of which made sitting outside and sleeping with the windows open less enjoyable. (Ideally, the whole site wants shifting a little bit further West!) Pitches 1 - 10, 42 - 56, 57 - 62 and 88 - 95 would probably be the quietest from road noises.

But it is a very handy site for Oxford - buses from the A4095 through Bladon and on the A44 - or to Pear Tree P&R (junc of A44 & A34) and buss in (60p pay & display parking plus £1.90 bus fare return in 2005). Also handy for visiting the Blenheim Palace, gardens and grounds. Members staying on the site usually get a small reduction on the entry. If visiting in good weather, the cost is well worth it. The Palace is both beautiful and interesting - plenty of details about Churchill and his famous ancestor John Duke of Marlborough and the gardens and grounds should be strolled. The clean Cafe serves excellent sandwiches and hot food.

Woodstock is a nice village but has little parking. It can easily be walked or cycled to on the combined use path. There is a CP down a narrow road to the right in the centre, next to the Police and Library. It several pubs, and a smashing little Co-op supermarket (2nd Left after last Palace gate) - but shop early - it can run low on essentials. From near the Car Park, there is a National Cycle Route 5 access, which soon leaves the village behind. after carefully negotiating the nettles and thistles on an early short stretch, it crosses a minor road and then becomes a delightful sheltered ride for some 5 miles. Bladon is a small village and most folk briefly visit the Churchill graves and peek into St Martin’s Church. But we recommend the Park House Tea Rooms opposite for an excellent breakfast, snack or cream tea in very pleasant surroundings. We had a lunch of Welsh Rarebit plus a good salad garnish and two poached eggs on, plus a 4 cup pot of tea, very good value.

Close to the site are also the Oxford Bus Museum, with memorial exhibition to Lord Nuffield and the Oxford Cowley Motor car works and a simple Cafe and shop. A tidy and interesting place to visit and very reasonable but check open days in the site Information hut. Near Chipping Norton, there is a homely, 17th C Chastelton House (NT) in a very rural and unspoiled setting, again worth a visit - but do check availability. Finally, dining out - a good take-away in Woodstock, on the right past the centre and on the left, an excellent Chipper. But for a dinner out, visit "the Turnpike", at Yarnton, a short drive down the A44 toward Oxford, just past the airport. Good grub, wide selection, good friendly service and good value - best in the area.

Attractive site close to 3 roads, so some road noise, but we didn’t find it was too much. Also quite a few light aircraft around, but then I like planes, so that didn’t bother me! There was a horse show on at Blenheim Palace near the site so there was some noise from loudspeaker announcements etc. This all makes it sound like a very noisy place, but overall the site was attractive and relaxing.

Mixture of hardstanding and grass pitches. Next time we will make sure we aren’t pitched under the same oak tree that kept throwing acorns at us all through the night.....! That bothered us far more than any roads, planes or horse shows :-((

Get a letter from the wardens if you want to visit Blenheim Palace then you get in at group rate (but make sure you go to the entrance on the main road not the one in the village, that can’t handle discounts).

To find site:- From Oxford or Woodstock on the A44 at roundabout take the A4095 signed for Bladon/Witney. After 350 metres turn right into minor road and site is on the left in 200 metres.

Bladon Chains is open from the end of March to early November for members only. There 92 pitches, about a third are on gravel hardstandings. The site is divided into two sections either side of Reception. Pitches are set out along each side of the site roads leaving plenty of space in the middle so it does not seem crowded. Whilst the pitches are level the topography of the site is undulating. Electric points are convenient to all pitches and they also have a digital TV hook-up but you must provide your own cable. There is a single toilet block situation approximately in the middle of the site and includes a wash up area and laundry. There are also service points in each pitching area plus a single recycling point. For younger children there is a playground and a knockabout area for older ones. Reception sells milk and newspapers can be ordered. Near to Reception is an information hut with details of attractions out and about. The site does not have WiFi and I found that mobile broadband via my Vodafone dongle could only get a GPRS signal. Near the site entrance there is a late arrivals area which can take about 3 units although I could not see any hook-up points. During our stay there was a mobile Fish and Shop that called on Tuesday evenings. Date of visit April 2011.

This site is only a stone’s throw from Blenheim Palace the birth place of Winston Churchill, he is buried at Bladon Church which is a reasonably short walk from the campsite. Woodstock is in walking distance of the site ( alongside the busy A44) with a selection shops, pubs and restaurants. Oxford city centre is half an hour away by bus. For shopping the is a good small Co-Op supermarket in Woodstock but for a wider choice you would need to travel to Oxford.

Inside the shower block

On the A4260, just South of Banbury. M40 junction 11

We have just got back from spending our first trip this year at Bo Peep Farm, Banbury, which opened for the seasons business on Friday 26th. 1999
What a lovely site. We were greeted by the wardens and given a free bottle of wine due to the fact we were one of the first to arrive on the opening day, what a wonderful gesture. All the staff we met were most helpful and a credit to the C.C.
As for the site itself, we found it faultless for our needs. There’s a 2 mile walk which surrounds the site (dogs loved it) which includes a ¼ mile stream frontage at the bottom. The shower and toilet blocks were impeccable, spotlessly clean with lashings of hot water, which was very welcome after waking up to sub zero temperatures on both the mornings we stayed. If it’s peace and quiet you’re after then this is a must. Down the A4260 approx. 1 mile away is the Oxford canal with it’s splendid towpath walks, and just up the road towards Adderbury, are Adderbury lakes where ducks and other wildlife abound.
A very enjoyable site, we’ll definitely be going again and the good thing is, it’s only an hour away from where we live. Don’t try booking this weekend <Easter ’99>, it’s fully booked, then again who isn’t!!

The C.C has got it spot on when it describes the site as follows:

----"An intimate site on the edge of the village of Adderburywith views over the rolling countryside of the Cherwell Valley. This beautiful site uses 9 acres of small fields, each with different views and aspects to offer a variety of generous grass pitches. There are circular walks around the farm, through the woods and along the river bank. The site is approached via it’s private half mile tarmac driveway and a secure and peaceful stay is assured. It makes an excellent base to exploring the unspoilt charms of the Cherwell Valley, it’s grassy meadows, cornfields, ancient hedgerows and quiet streams. Banbury is the nearest town, there since Saxon times and forever associated with the famous 16th Century nursery rhyme."

Adding to this, I can state that the shower blocks are immaculate, showers supplying lashings of hot water, although at first, it did take a minute or two to figure out how to operate the switch (minor prob). For the children there are no play things ie swings etc, however there is an abundance of wildlife on site with many a rabbit scurrying about, especially first thing in the morning

(Editors Note)
This second report echo’s the first, but adds the additional, up to date info.

M40 junction 11, join the A4260, South of Banbury to Adderbury, turn left onto B4100 Adderbury-Aynho road, site on right in 300 metres. The approach to the site, from the main road, is along a single track road but there is vision along the road, but caution is advised.

This remains one of our favourite sites, not least because it is only 30 miles from where we live, we paid our fifth visit at Easter 2001. It is part of the Caravan Club Network as a MUC site so members get a discount.
The site is split into several pitching areas. One field is set aside for tent campers.
Bo Peep has grown and developed over the years. During 2001 they are expanding into another area with further 30 plus new pitches. One thing that is immediately noticeable are the spacious pitches, in most cases better than the Caravan Club standard and it perhaps has the feel of a French country campsite. There are two toilet blocks, one of older design and the other is modern and spacious. Both are very well looked after.
Reception also doubles as a shop selling sweets, ice cream and milk. Newspapers can also be ordered. The site has a very relaxed atmosphere, helped in no small way by the friendly permanent wardens. This site is particularly busy at weekends so booking is advised, £10 deposit direct to site.

As the names implies it is set on a farm. One unusual feature of the site are the mown walkways around several fields on the farm which offer a choice of gentle walking opportunities.
Not far from the site is a pub that does food. The Oxford Canal is with in walking distance and there is a golf club next door to the site.

Bo Peep is popular with caravanners who leave their vans on site, although vans are generally moved by the site staff to the recently extended storage facility rather than being left on a pitch. There are a limited number of hard standings used as permanent pitches.
The site opens at Christmas and New Year and this is becoming increasingly popular.

A working farm with several fields allocated to caravans. Mostly level grass pitches, well cared for. Seperate camping/rally field. Facilities spotless. Shop.

This site stands out as having some of the best dog-walking facilities I have ever seen on a site with themed walks around the periphery of fields ajoining the site and along the river bank. Good provision of Bins and Bags without being intrusive on the rest of the site.

Easy access from Banbury and M40. Even caravan washing facilities (extra charge).

This is a 4 acre commercial site on the outskirts of Wallingford, but it is only yards from the River Thames and some very nice looking pubs! Some static’s on site. It has a toilet block (showers 30-50p), but personally I wouldn’t wash my dog in them !! At the time of our visit it was very unsavoury! It has pitches for 111 ’vans and tents. There is a small shop in the reception area and a laundry room. They sell Gaz and charge batteries. If you don’t mind being dependent on your own facilities, it’s very convenient for visiting Henley-on-Thames, Oxford, Goring and elsewhere in the Thames Valley. Excellent site for dogs as you are only yards from the footpaths where you can walk for miles. Stout footwear recommended! At the time of our visit (May) it was still very wet underfoot and very boggy in places.
The staff in reception were very friendly.

Site costs £8.00p in the low season and £10.00p. in the peak season. I think the E/HU was extra. Would definitely stay their again for the lovely location.

120 Pitches on 10 acres. More info on page 146 CC sites book.
They do take non-members.

We have just returned from a weekend at this site. We took our two grandchildren away for a birthday treat, taking them to the Cotswold Wildlife Park for the whole day Saturday, but more of that later.

Burford. Deep in the heart of beautiful Oxfordshire, and a real treat for a ’townie’ like me.

We have come to expect excellence from the Caravan Club, and we were not disappointed with Burford. Not only was the site clean, tidy and well run. It was well thought out. There are thoughtfully place beds of shrubs dotted around, breaking up the ’sea of caravans’ feeling.

All pitches were, for most part, level, requiring only slight adjustment to the side to side levelling. As far as I could see, all pitches had electric hook-up, or the option was there. None of the pitches seemed to be far from a tap/disposal point.

The toilet/shower block was excellent, and was wheelchair friendly. (a ramp up to the door for one thing)
The gents boasted 5 showers (1 adapted for wheelchairs) 8 wash cubicles (2 for wheelchairs) 5 ’sitdowns’ (1 for wheelchairs) & 1 long ’stand-up’ + 2 hand basins & blow dryer
The ladies was the same sort of layout, but geared to the ladies requirements :o)
All showers were free and unlimited, but my long standing moan about somewhere to put my glasses and somewhere dry to dress applies. These showers were much better than some I’ve been in. At least there was ample hooks for clothes, and at last !! a shelf for the shampoo bottle (normally goes on the floor).

There’s a large playground, about 1/2 an acre with swings, slides, rocking things etc. It also had a largish area for ball games with junior sized goal posts for football. All this was in a gated, fenced area, with a further enclosure, again gated with the swings and spring ride on things (I must be getting old. I don’t know what they are called !!). The ground in this inner area was covered with wood bark chippings, so safe for the little ones.
The playground is situated at the back of the site, and is screened by shrubbery. In one respect it deadens the noise the ’little ones’ might make, but at the same time it acts as a good sight screen !!

Dogs are allowed, but I didn’t see a dog walk. I assume you would need to walk them off site. I saw several pouches, all being well behaved, and not leaving ’little presents’ for us to step on :o)

Our sole purpose for choosing this site was it’s close proximity to the Cotswold Wildlife Park. For this it is perfect. The entrance to the site faces the entrance to the wildlife park. You only have to walk across the lane.
Tickets for the park can be obtained from the site office, at discounted prices, so you don’t have to queue to get in !!
The day we went to the park was sunny and hot (thank God) and our grandchildren loved every minute. We didn’t get to see any of the big cats that are there, it must have been too hot for them, but there was everything else that you would expect to find.
At the end of the day, it was our grandchildren who suggested that we leave, Nanny and Grand-dad were quite happy just wandering around and soaking up the sun.

The SL rating: 9/10 (10/10 would have a bar on the next pitch :o)

Site visited May 2000

The site is open between the end of March and the end of October. Caravans, Motor Caravans and Trailer Tents only, no tents. Non members admitted. 120 pitches.

The site, which is set in 10 acres, is situated 2 miles south of Burford on the A361 Lechlade road next to the Cotswold Wildlife Park. With the exception of a couple of hard standings for large motor caravans all other pitches are on grass. We visited after a period of very heavy rain but the ground was still sound, although the warden was moving vans on and off pitches with his tractor. The pitches are set round tarmac roads with screening from young trees and shrubs. The one toilet block is up to the usual high standards associated with the Caravan Club. There seemed to be some flexibility in leaving times.

This site is convenient for either visits to Oxford, Witney or the rest of the Cotswolds. Burford is a couple of miles away and Lechlade is 6 miles south and of course you have easy access to the Wildlife Park.

Just a couple of tiny health warnings. During weekends and Bank Holidays traffic for the Wildlife Park can back up to the A40 at Burford so it might be best to avoid arriving two hours from mid day. RAF Brize Norton is only a couple of miles away so a little aircraft noise will be experienced although we did not find this intrusive.

To Find Site:
From the main A40 on the outskirts of Burford turn left at roundabout onto A361 towards Lechlade. After about 2 miles turn right at signs for Cotswold Wildlife Park the site is on the right.

The site, which is set in 10 acres, is situated 2 miles south of Burford just off the A361 Lechlade road next to the Cotswold Wildlife Park.

The wardens have created a nice floral display as you enter the site and an interesting touch is the free herb garden provided by a local garden centre.
This site accepts non members but not tents. There are 119 pitches in total, 41 being on gravel hardstandings the rest being on grass. Reception sells newspapers and some essentials. The pitches are set round tarmac roads with screening from trees and shrubs.
Electric points are placed conveniently around the site and the bollards have digital television connections. The one toilet block is up to the usual high standards associated with the Caravan Club. Adjacent is a motorhome service point. Apart from the provision of fresh water/grey water disposal and toilet emptying at the toilet block there are two other service points although this does leave some pitches quite a distance from the nearest point.
There seemed to be some flexibility in leaving times if the site is not fully booked the following day. Children are well catered for with a large play area/games field to suit all ages. Some phone networks have poor signal strength on this site. The site has a small caravan storage facility.

RAF Brize Norton is only a couple of miles away so some aircraft noise will be experienced although we did not find this intrusive.

This site is convenient for visits to Oxford, Witney or the rest of the Cotswolds. Burford is a couple of miles away and Lechlade is 6 miles south and of course you have easy access to the Wildlife Park. During weekends and Bank Holidays traffic for the Wildlife Park can back up to the A40 at Burford at certain times of day. For serious food shopping there is a Waitrose and Sainsburys in Witney.

Beautifully laid out small site that had won a regional CL award last year and was entering again this year.

Flowers everywhere.

Individual pitches marked with names of campers. A couple of peacocks added to it’s charm.

The town of Thame was just down the road, although Paul managed to miss it every time we tried to get there.

Coombe Farm CL is a beautifully maintained, five pitches, site.

The grass is kept immaculate, the whole site is very well looked after and the friendly welcome of Mr. and Mrs. Preston makes the site well worth a visit.

I can well believe the site has had several awards for beauty, etc.

The peacocks are still there, entertaining visitors with their friendliness.

Nearby Thame is a very nice small town, where easy parking allows relaxing shopping. And for the masochists, there is always Oxford.....

I will definitely return!!

Photo of the site--- Typical pitch

To find site take B4022 from Charlbury towards Enstone. The site is about three quarters of a mile from Charlbury.

This is quite a large site with 125 generously sized pitches, which are arranged in groups around the access roads divided by stands of mature trees.
Trailer tents and larger stand-alone tents are sometimes accommodated alongside caravans but there is also quite a large tent area divided up by ranch fencing. There is ample provision of water taps and rubbish disposal. The two heated toilet blocks, built in Cotswold Stone, are of an excellent standard and they contain a bathroom and family room. WC chemical disposal is available at each toilet block.
The site reception also doubles as the site shop selling bread, milk, wine and other essentials and newspapers can be ordered. Children are well catered for with two play areas plus a couple of barn style building with pool tables and skittles and for the adults there is a tennis court.
There are lots of farm and domestic animals contained within walkways around the site which provides an extra point of interest. These walkways provide an opportunity to get some exercise on site. You can even walk into the village of Charlbury, about one country mile away, with only a short section on the road.

We visited this site over a Bank Holiday weekend so we found it quite noisy simply because of the volume of people. By mid afternoon on the Monday the site had gone from full to about 90% empty. I think that advanced booking would be essential for Bank Holidays but it might not be necessary at other times, even at weekends providing there are no particular events in the area but best check with the site. The site don’t seem to want a booking deposit but ask you to let them know if you can’t make it. The normal leaving time is 12 noon but flexibility is shown if the site is not full. Definitely a site we shall return to.

I can echo everything that David Klyne reported in 2002. I have just had 2 nights there and it’s one of the best sites I’ve been to in 6 years caravanning.

We found it fairly quiet, even though it was October half term. Must be something about Oxfordshire, as there was music in the toilet block (rather like Lincoln Park Farm)!

We were told that, in Summer, they queue down the long drive to get in, so we assume it’s busy.

The site is very well drained and many pitches are now gravel. The pitches are very well spaced out.

Site visited April 1999

This was the first ’real’ outing with new Camper (the previous weekend at Henley being a test run close enough to home to pop back and pick up things like tools and other bits we needed).

The site is made up of 23 pitches in an outer ring (most hard standing) with electric and space for about 10 units in an inner circle. There is a separate (dog free) tenting field and a picnic area. Dogs are allowed on the main field but need to be exercised off of the site. (A small path off the main road leads to a field for dog walking).

The pitches are well drained and showed no sign of ’boggyness’ even following the torrential rain.

The facilities are grouped together near the main house and include toilets, wash rooms, laundry, showers, chemical disposal and drinking water. (there are no stand pipes in the camping area but all of the facilities are about 50 yards from the furthest pitch).

There is a small shop/office stocked with essentials. The leisure facilities include an outdoor heated swimming pool, a games room and a bar with full size snooker table. They also do bar food in the main season.

This is a lovely site well run and the owner is always on hand if needed and very helpful.

It’s a good base for exploring the Oxford area and is close to the Bicester Village designer clothing complex containing a number of factory outlets. You can lose your teenagers in there for hours. In the town of Bicester itself there is a well stocked Caravan and Camping store (Bustins, Churchill Road) which came in handy when our water pump packed in. The guy there identified the problem and as the Camper is still under warranty, they agreed to invoice Marquis for a new pump under the cover terms.

All in all, this rates as one of our favorite sites (3rd visit in 2 years) and is a great escape for a weekend and not too far from our West London home. It does get busy in the summer and booking is advisable. I took some snaps and when they’re processed, I’ll put them up on a web site.

To find site leave A34, in either direction, at the Bletchingdon turn and take the B4027, the site is on the left in about a mile. This site would be handy for visiting Oxford and is quite close to Bicester.

This site is undergoing a transformation. A year ago it was purchased by the Hodge family who own Bo Peep Farm at Adderbury, and is run by Roger Hodge. There is also a husband and wife warden team who seem very pleasant.

When we last visited the site, about 12 years ago, I was not overly impressed with the size of the pitches. This is now being addressed. Whilst not all pitches are the same size most are quite generous and defined by either hedges or single low fence panels.
Diamond Farm is not a large site having only 40 pitches plus a tent area. The pitches are in two areas. The main part has a circular road with hardstanding pitches around the outside. The central section is all on grass. A second smaller area is at the back of the site with a play area behind that.
The reception has quite a good selection of basic foodstuffs. There is a bar and games room and an interesting feature of the site is that it has a swimming pool, although it does not allow unaccompanied children under 16 years of age.
It is difficult to comment on the toilet facilities as during our visit they consisted of a Porta Loo. However the new toilet block is only weeks away from completion and it looks absolutely superb, it even includes a family room with a bath (the warden gave me a sneak preview).

We visited for a long weekend at the beginning of July 2002.

Having read the other reports for this site we were keen to see the improvements. The welcome from the warden was great, really cheery and helpful.
The new facilities block has been completed to a high standard and neat touches abound, our pitch even had a well stocked flower border. Less satisfactory was the rather green swimming pool - which the owner decided to close for cleaning on the Saturday we were there (why this could not have been done in the week rather than have to disappoint all the children only there for the weekend was beyond me). An enquiry as to how long it would be out of action resulted in a rather curt reply that it probably take all day! This (along with the owners attitude) rather marred and otherwise pleasant stay.

Some of the pitches still seem rather small - but mostly the units are matched to the size of the pitch.
Overall a good site (if only the owner could take a few lessons from the warden in how to talk to his campers)

Site visited August 2001

To find site:- Leave Henley by the A4155, Marlow Road, the site is about a mile out of Henley on the left.

The site has 95 pitches which are a mixture of hardstanding and grass. There is one toilet block which is up to the usual CC standards. TV reception is poor but each electric bollard has a TV connection which is free for those with their own coax cables.
There is an enclosed play area for children on this site.
This is a members only site which accepts caravans, motor homes and trailer tents but not tents. Advance booking is advised as this site is often full, particularly through the summer, bank holidays and during the regatta.

This is a very convenient site to visit Henley on Thames, it is a 15 minute walk into the town centre. There you will find an excellent range of shops and restaurants. Also there are walks up and downstream along the Thames towpath. If you don’t want to walk there are river trips from the banks of the river near the bridge. This is a good base to visit other towns along the Thames, Marlow is 8 miles away and Windsor a little further.

As much as I like this site I have to attach a health warning. The A4155 is a very busy road and particularly during the morning and evening peak times there is an excessive amount of road noise which effects all the pitches which back onto the road. Other pitches will be less effected. Fortunately noise is not a problem through the night. If you have a thing about noise then this site may not be for you.

Henley site is in a lovely setting, half a mile from the town itself. It is a member’s only site.
Entrance to the site is by card-operated barrier. There are 91 pitches in total.
There is a good mixture of grass and hard standing. The site is dotted with mature trees so one can choose shaded or un-shaded.
One toilet block serves the site and includes washing up and veg. preparation areas and laundry room.
A TV booster system is on the electric bollards. Several service points provide fresh water and waste disposal.

The main road from Henley to Marlow runs adjacent to the site so there is some traffic noise but this is not obtrusive.
The site seems relaxed and peaceful and it is only a short walk to the town of Henley and the river Thames.
Shops and supermarkets are in Henley but the warden sells milk bread eggs etc.

This is another first class CC site.

To Find Site:
From junction 10 of the M40 take B430 towards Middleton Stoney. After about a mile and a half turn right at campsite sign, also signed for The Heyfords. The campsite is immediately of the left, just past the traffic calming as you enter Upper Heyford.

Heyford Leys was originally a CL type site but has, over the years, developed into a small campsite. The owners give you a very warm welcome.
It would be a handy overnight stop off the M40, however you are asked to phone ahead rather than just turn up, particularly at weekends. It is perhaps best suited for weekends rather than long stays.
The site is sandwiched between a Park Home site on one side and, across a field, what used to be the US Air Force base on the other. It has around 25 pitches, 5 of which are on hardstanding. The grass pitches are open from Easter but the hardstanding pitches are open all year. They are all of a generous size with electric points nearby.
The toilet block, whilst perfectly clean, is functional rather than luxurious but does have very large shower cubicles. There appears to be no low level waste disposal so it could be difficult to empty the Wastemaster type containers.
There are no children’s play facilities.
The central area of the site seems to be taken up by some permanent caravans occupied by workman during the week.
Full payment is required on booking. The site will accept Rallies. During our stay, beginning of April we were the only touring unit on site which was a bit surprising as other sites we have been to have been fairly full. This might be to do with the pricing structure of one price all year, £14 including electrics, which makes it reasonable value in the main season but a bit expensive in the off season.

The Oxford Canal is not far from the site and you can while away time watching the boats go through the lock at Upper Heyford, for the fit a reasonable walk from the site.
Lower Heyford Wharf is also interesting and there is a handy cafe where you enjoy a coffee and watch the boats.
There are pubs in both Upper and Lower Heyford.
The City of Oxford is not so far away and the Park and Ride facilities are well signed from all directions. Closer is Bicester where there are supermarkets and of course the Bicester Village Outlet Shopping Centre.

It does not look as if they have a web or email address

I suppose I owe it to the people who run it.. Jeff & Sue Hawkins....to tell you about this site. I was hoping to keep it a secret........ but the cats out of the bag !!!

This site is close to Oxford. It is a caravanning and camping touring site, but also has some large residentail type units for hire. I’ve got to say it must be the best UK site we have ever stopped at, (we have been touring here and the continent for the last 18 years).

The site is located in a little village called Standlake, which is on the A415, west of Oxford.

I’ll give you what it says in the leaflet and then elaborate...

Its got 89 pitches (including 22 super pitches) in 8 acres, most are set in their own bays a bit like continental sites.

It has two, yes two, indoor swimming pools complete with spa pools saunas and steam room, a fitness suite and toilets that I will be definitely nominating for LOO of The Year award (piped music comes on as you enter!. unbelievable)

Pitch Fees off season specials February and November £5.50 a night.... rising to £12.95 high season...

Staff incredibly helpful and friendly.

Pubs and local shop within spitting distance....I’ll shut up or I’ll never get in again..... :o)

Site visited Friday 9th November to Sunday 11th November 2001.
...and recently Thursday 16th May to Sunday 19th May 2002.

I’m not going to go on and on and on about this site, (although it would be easy to) as its already had a mention from another Clic member, but this really is a fantastic site. Unfortunately, this was the very first site that we visited after purchasing our tourer last November, and we therefore compare every site that we visit, to this one. It will really take some beating!
We just returned from a trip there last week, and the site was packed - not a spare pitch to be found. Although this was a lot different to our first visit, the site still seemed peaceful and relaxing (and we were pitched next door but one to the play area!). The toilets/showers etc are absolutely immaculate, you could sleep in the shower block, its that comfortable, and its really rather nice to see to the daily ablutions whilst listening to panpipes being piped around the block! The rest of the facilities are great too - free microwave and freezer facility, not to mention the swimming pools, giant draughts and chess and pitch and put. The site is definitely very popular with lots of repeat visitors. When I telephoned to book our pitch a week before we were due to go, there was only 3 pitches left. We were told by the extremely efficient and friendly staff that nearly every weekend for the season is fully booked. I guess that speaks for itself! Shucks!

Mobile reception OK, TV reception poor with Status Aerial

To find site: On A40 from Oxford continue towards Witney and take A415 towards Abingdon. In Standlake look out for Standlake Garage (the only garage in Standlake) turn left immediately past garage. The site is about 300 metres on right.

Lincoln Farm has around 90 pitches all with electric points and all, except for an area set aside for tents and trailer tents, are on gravel hardstanding. The site has a spacious feel with lots of mature trees and the pitches are in small groups. The site can accommodate the large American Motor Homes and some pitches seemed designed for this purpose. Water points and WC disposal points are dotted at convenient places around the site. In addition to standard pitches there is also a number of ’Super Pitches’ which have their own water, electric, waste and TV connection, these pitches cost an extra £4 a night. The water connections on the Super Pitches are rather clever as they consist of a cistern into which you place your submersible pump so you get constant water supply. The site does not allow the erection of gazebos or other freestanding structures. The two toilet blocks are absolutely superb in both quality and the way they are maintained. At the two toilet blocks in the washing up areas is a microwave oven and a freezer for use by campers. In the tent area there is a separate covered cooking facility with microwave and fridge/freezer as well as washing-up sinks. Access to the site is via a keypad controlled barrier.

Additional features of the site are a children’s play area, an information point, pitch and putt course, dog walks, shop and a leisure centre with 2 pools (additional fees). The site accepts advance bookings with a £15 deposit. The normal departure time is 12 noon, however departure time can be extended by payment of an additional fee.

Lincoln Farm is only a few miles from Witney which has good shopping facilities as well as being a well known Cotswold town. A little further away is Oxford with its dreaming spires. A short walk from the site is the Black Horse pub which does food.

We don’t use many commercial sites but I have to say that Lincoln Farm is of a superb quality even if it does cost a little more than we usually pay per night. If that is not a problem I would certainly recommend this site.

Open March - October.

This is a small (2 acre) listed Camping & Caravanning Club site, well situated for visiting for visiting Oxford and the delightful towns and villages of the River Thames. It has fifteen pitches with E/HU’S. There is a new toilet block with coded access, which contains a new shower and Loo, but we didn’t use the shower as it was £1.00p a time, which we thought was a bit steep! Mr. Betts gives you the code at the time of booking, and he has a caretaker, who collects the pitch fees.

The site is 0.5 miles from the River Thames and 2 miles from the Ridgeway Chilterns Walk.

Not a bad little site but looks like some of the ’vans were lived in at the time of our visit, judging by the size of some of the gas cylinders!

I think it was £7.50p. a night including E/HU.

Open all year
Open to non-members ...who need to note this

The access to the site is via the car park of Go Outdoors, a blue building with no windows, and the car park and shop entrance at the rear. You then enter the site, and turn hard left to the barrier and reception.

After a friendly greeting, and completing the formalities, like paying, we were issued with our security code for the entry barrier, then were directed to our pitch.

All pitches on the site are grass, and seem firm. The pitches for caravans/large tents/trailer tents all have electricity, but there is a separate area for small tents without hook-ups. This area is behind a low fence and has its own parking area.

The facilities block is in the middle of the site and is clean, but out-of-date. I understand that the club only has a yearly lease on the site, so are not willing to spend the required sum to replace the block.

The site has a stream on both sides, a Warehouse beyond one of them, Roads nearby on two sides, and a railway line within earshot, so is noisy during the day and evening but fairly quiet during the night. The most regular sound is that of emergency vehicles, both ambulances heading for the hospital, and police cars!

There is plenty to see and do in the area, and to get into the city you walk out of the site, then across a large car park to the park and ride bus stop. The fare into the city centre is £2 return and we felt it to be good value.

The exit from the site involves another sharp left turn, and because of the entrance/exit, and the pitch sizes there is a limit of 26ft on units accepted.

Situated just outside the centre of Henley-on-Thames, this site is ideally placed for access to both the town and the River Thames. We were told it’s very busy during the Regatta week, so one would need to book early for this time. The Regatta dates for 2008 are 2nd to 6th July (you might find this useful www.hrr.co.uk/).

We visited Swiss Farm early April. We were lucky with the weather, it was sunny, but there was a cold wind.
The staff were very helpful, both with matters concerning the park, but also with information about Henley and the surrounding area. It seems that Henley has a large quota of famous people in and around the town.

The main shopping centre is just a short walk away from the site and a Waitrose is behind the market square. There is a market in the square on Thursdays.

Marlow is just 10 minutes by car. Reading, Maidenhead and Windsor are all about 1/2 hour away.

The caravan park is set out in avenues, with hedges in between the short rows so one get a sense of privacy.

The facilities:
Swimming pool, Bar, Games room, a play area for the tots and coarse fishing on site.
There is an area given over to static caravans which can be hired.

To find site: Exit Henley on the Marlow Road. Pass Henley Rugby Club on the left and Swiss Farm is about 100 metres further on the left.

Swiss Farm International is a large site on the outskirts of the delightful town of Henley on Thames. We had a very warm welcome at reception. Fortunately Swiss farm is set some way back from the Marlow Road so road noise is not an issue. The site is terraced with a flatter area nearer to reception. Of the 142 marked pitches 61 are gravel hardstanding and the rest on grass, although both need at least some fore and aft levelling. Hardstandings are also serviced with water, waste and TV hook-up. We had a grass pitch which after a lot of rain was a bit soft. Size was quite generous but we found that the depth was not really sufficient to position our 7.3 mts caravan hitch to road. We then had to use quite a few blocks to get the caravan level across the pitch but succeeded in the end! There are two large tent fields although these do not appear to have electrics and any tenters wanting an electric supply would have to use the numbered pitches. Electric points are convenient to each pitch and are rated at 10 amps. Each row of pitches has at least one water point and a waste water disposal point. There are a couple of toilet disposal points within reasonably easy reach of all pitches. The two toilet blocks are at either end of the site. They are of a good quality although under pressure at certain times of day when the site is busy. The reception building contains a small shop selling some essentials as well has some camping bits and toys. There is a nice bar opening onto a terrace in front of the swimming pool (EC). The site does have site wide WiFi which is currently chargeable but they are hoping to make it a free service in the future. We found the speed of the WiFi quite slow but apparently they are soon to upgrade to fibre broadband which should improve things by a large margin. Dogs are not accepted during the peak season. For Children there is a large adventure playground. There is also an onsite fishing lake. Bookings can be made online and a 20% deposit is required and the balance paid 2 weeks before arrival. Date of visit early August 2012.

Being situated in the Thames Valley there are endless opportunities for day trips. Also London is a possible day trip with several stations within easy reach of the site. Henley is only a ten minute walk from the campsite with numerous options for eating out and for food shopping there is an excellent Waitrose in the town centre.
