This one was an absolute gem. I wish we had been half way through our holiday, I would have stayed a week.
Just 2Km off junction 27 of the A35 autoroute. 60 pitches, swimming pool, and sanitary facilities you could eat in!
Hedges in separate areas define the large flat pitches. The owners cannot do enough for you.
Ten minutes away is the largest hypermarket [Cora] I have ever seen.
Although we only stayed one night this is one we have marked to return to. A number of people I spoke too had stopped for a night and stayed several.

The site is right in the middle of the Alsace region so wine is plentiful. We were very lucky in that a weekly wine tasting was being held on the night of our visit. A very knowledgeable lady who had several different bottles to try conducted this. Needless to say we added another couple of cases to stock!

To Find Site:
Leave A35, south of Colmar, at junction 27. Follow signs for Herrlisheim and site is just over one kilometre from the autoroute and is well signed.

The pitches on this site are set in groups off the main site road and there are lots of mature trees to provide shade. Pitches are of varying size from adequate to large. At the far end of the site is an area set aside for tents which avoids noise from passing traffic. The pitches are all on grass although some have a slightly stony base. There is a choice of electrical ampage either standard 4amp or at an extra fee 8amps. Water points are dotted along the site roads. They are of the press type with poor pressure so it takes ages to fill an aquaroll. There are two really excellent toilet blocks which are maintained to a very high standard. At reception you can order bread and other bakery items, they also sell some wine and beer. If you want to use your own computer the site provides an ethernet socket which can be used free of charge but a small donation is welcomed. I understand the site will loan you a network cable. Given that we ended up here by default, our previous site could not accommodate us, we really enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return. It is very convenient to the A35 although far enough away not to be bothered by noise. This campsite accepts the ACSI Card.

There are many delightful wine villages only a short drive from the site and they are well worth exploring. For serious shopping Colmar is your best choice with a couple of supermarkets not far from the motorway. Whilst this site deserves a stay in its own right it is also a useful stopping off point en route to Switzerland and Italy. Date of visit, early June 2007.

Date of visit: 13 June 2002.

We used this as a night halt on our way south. The site is ten minutes off the autoroute and just on the outskirts of Strasbourg. It is therefore very convenient for visiting the city. There is a bus service outside the site gate into the centre. There are a number of long stay workers on the site.
The pitches are large and level mainly on grass. The site itself was clean and well maintained but the toilet block could have been cleaner. We had to remove flies from the basin and shower tray before use.
There is no shop on site but bread can be ordered from reception and there are other shops within 100 metres.
There is no pool.
A discount on site fees is available on production of your CCI card.
I would use this site again as a night halt or for a couple of days to visit Strasbourg, as it is so central.

To Find Site:
From the D426 ring road follow green signs to campsite (camping VVF)

This is a busy Municipal campsite on the edge of the delightful town of Obernai is open all year. There are 150 pitches which are on grass although some have grit based hardstanding in the centre of the pitch. Electricity and water are available to the majority of pitches. Although the pitches are of a good size the campsite feels cramped when full. There are two good quality toilet blocks. There are special hardstanding pitches set aside for motorcaravans. Children have provision of play equipment. Reception sells a few essentials including local wines and bread can be ordered the day before. The internet can be accessed from a terminal in reception at a modest charge. I am sure you will generally find room at this campsite but if our experience is anything to go by it might be wise to phone ahead. We arrived on a Friday after a long journey and were informed that we could only stay one night, when we wanted to stay longer, as they had booked the campsite out to 3 groups/rallies arriving the following day. I thought this a bit daft for a Municipal Campsite! However there are some good alternatives in the area and I would be happy to suggest Clair Vacances near Herrlisheim as one.

Obernai town centre is only a short walk from the campsite and is well worth a visit. Obernai is on the Route des Vins so a useful stop over for wine lovers. Likewise for those heading to and from Switzerland it makes a useful point to break your journey.

This is a gem of a site and is listed as 4 star municipal. It’s location couldn’t be better for touring the wine routes and regions of Alsace. Also it is on the edge of the town centre, about 10 mins walk, so is good for motorhomes.
The town itself is so pretty its just a nice place to sit and while away a few hours.

The site is fairly easy to find but final approach needs concentration.
Leave the A35 just South of Selestat onto the D106, Ribeauville. At the edge of the town at traffic lights turn right and then immediate right, past a flower shop, site is in about 1/4 mile (large speed humps). When reaching the site park, in the marked waiting area and go to the reception. Excellent English is spoken here and site information leaflets in English also. You will be given a site plan and allowed to choose your pitch. Once chosen you tell the warden and are then issued with an electronic sensor (large deposit req) to open the barrier on entry. The barrier is locked between 10pm and 9am for entry.
Cars can be left in the parking area at the gate.

All areas are serviced by tarmac roads with the pitching areas in squares of 4 to 6 vans off these. Unfortunately a lot of the pitches were void of grass, which is surprising as they have a strict rule about groundsheets. Breathable only. Re-seeding was taking place when we were there.

There is one large amenities building. With only one word to describe it. Superb.
Ample showers and toilets, spotlessly clean and two large areas for dishwashing and laundry. The whole building is surrounded by shrubs and flowers.

There is no swimming pool but the open air municipal pool is just 200 yds away and a discount is given.

One nice feature of the site is that it has two resident storks who will walk around the site introducing themselves at meal times.

We arrived at tea time on 15th June and the site was almost full so we had to take what was left of the pitches. Apparently 15th June is a public holiday in Germany so being near the border it was quite full of Germans who were making the most of a long weekend.
It does seem a popular site so I would think that pre-booking would be wise in peak season.

Comments from Harry re the above site and the area

We were there two years ago and absolutely loved it. It is very Germanic in it’s appearance and feel. There are many quaint villages which follow the ’Wine Route’ and these are a must to visit.
We stayed at a place called Ribeauville and just used the municipal there. It was very big for a municipal and very popular, perhaps due to it’s location. It’s only a very short walk to the town with all its shops and restaurants. It was very beautiful.
The main town of the area was Colmar and this again was a must to see. For scenery the Rhine is not very far but inland the hilly area is very nice especially Le Bonhomme pass. Also if you feel like a trip into Germany then Freiburg isn’t very far. I suppose it’s do-able in a day from Calais, if that’s your arrival port, but it would be to far for me. There are quite a few municipals in the area and one commercial site which everyone seems to rave about called Clair Vacance which is just south of Colmar. I think David had stopped there.
