Site visted September 2006

Etang means lake, and this site borders a lake with a beach having a water-slide!

Arnay le Duc is a medieval town about 250 miles north of Avignon.
A little off the beaten track, the site is level with grass pitches of a generous size, although some back-to-back pitches share one EHU which can be over quite a high hedge.

Two toilet blocks are reasonable, but there is no pool or shop.

The lake provides the swimming as it has a grit beach with a water-slide - although with the large number of ducks and swans around the water looks a bit murky.

The town with it’s medieval church etc is very nice with a good selection of shops and restaurants.

To find site:
Leave A77 at junction 37 and take road D976 in the direction of Bourges. At first roundabout take road to Nevers. Just before bridge over the Loire turn right and campsite immediately on the left. Be warned that site reception is closed between midday and 3.00pm and there is no space immediately outside the site to wait so best to time you arrival to avoid the closure.

Camping de Nevers has a lovely situation on the banks of the River Loire overlooking the town on the opposite bank. There are two parts to the site, a higher terraced section and a lower section on the river bank. There are around 70 pitches although only the terraced ones seem to be numbered and with the exception of a couple of mobiles they are all touring. Pitch size is not over generous particularly on the terrace section and newly planted trees don’t help access and they are longer than they are wide. I would have thought it would be difficult to place the averaged sized UK caravan on some pitches without the aid of a mover. Likewise setting up an awning could also be difficult due to the provision of space. Electric points, CEE17 connectors, are rated at 6amps. a long lead might be required for the lower section. Water points are dotted around the site. Chemical toilet disposal is combined with the motorhome service point, not sure I would use the water points in this area for caravan water supplies! The reception building is on two levels with the bureau at the higher level and the bar and toilets facilities at the lower level. The bar also does snacks. The toilet facilities are modern and of a high standard with seated toilets but no paper provided. Both toilets and showers are unisex. Internet access is available by a fixed terminal but the WiFi was not working during our stay. The site accepts Camping Cheques out of the high season. Camping de Nevers is a popular night halt and tends to fill up by late afternoon although I would have thought you would find space but I suspect electrics could not be guaranteed.

Apart from being a useful north/south stopover the pleasant town of Nevers, just across the river from the site, is worth a visit. The motor racing circuit at Magny Cours is about 10 miles south. There are numerous supermarkets in the area as well as full shopping opportunities in the town.

Date of visit early September 2009.

To Find Site:-
From the south leave the A6 at junction 25 and head for Chagny on the N6. Do not go into the town of Chagny but continue to the D974 where you turn left, following signs for Santenay. After about 3kms turn right at signs for Santenay and follow signs to campsites. The roads through Santenay are quite tight so care is required. From Beaune pick up the D974 and then instructions as above.

Camping des Sources is a pleasant campsite tucked away amongst the vineyards of Santenay and on the edge of the town. Its not too far off the main north/south autoroute and its certainly worth the detour. Most of the pitches, all of good size, have shade from mature trees. The exception being a recently developed section which is more open but does have lovely views on the vines. There is one centrally situated toilet block of a good standard and well maintained. It has unseated loos and paper is not provided to individual cubicles but on a big roll inside the block. There is a small shop, although only open limited hours. Bread can be ordered and they stock some basics including wine and ice cream. In the evening there is a takeaway service available. The site normally has a restaurant but there was a notice informing clients that during the 2007 season it would not be open. Reception opens in the morning, closes about midday and reopens mid afternoon. Arrivals during the time reception is closed are instructed to find a pitch and return later to book in. An excellent idea rather than having to wait around outside until reception reopens. Water taps are dotted around the site and 6 amp electrics are available to most pitches. Keycamp are represented on this campsite although they do not dominate the site. WiFi, as well as fixed internet computers, is available near the shop area, good value access cards can be purchased from reception. Date of visit late June 2007. Camping Cheques accepted.

Adjacent to this campsite there is a Municipal Swimming Pool and I think the site have an arrangement for entry to the pool. The village of Santenay is about a 15 minute walk from the site. It has several restaurants, lots of caves and even a small supermarket. For a more comprehensive selection of shops Chagny is only 10 minutes away in the car. If you are a wine lover this corner of France would keep you happy for weeks and without the need to travel long distances.

A quiet site!

Lots of shady pitches, though plenty is full sun, all with 10amp electric, some with trees in the middle too. Water spaced around the site all with those push flow taps needing David’s little trick with the strap to clamp it open—though I use a bicycle toe clip strap. There are some pre-erected tents on site for one of the large companies

The site has Reception and shop. Takeaway in season. Toilet/shower block

Swimming pools, games areas, playgound, football and basketball (not open on our visit) and Boulé area. The owner is very helpful even if he has a little trouble with English he is very easy to get on with.

The local town of Satenay is easy to reach from the Autoroute even if it is about 10 miles away.
Whilst the entry to the town looks a little daunting as you turn the blind corner to see a lovely curved bridge, which is actually easy to drive over with the caravan on the back, the narrow streets with parking both sides are far more so.
There is a fairly busy railway running through the town though noise is not a problem, though the crossings are uneven.
A little outside of the town there is a nice canal with a “Route Verté” running along the towpaths

As a stopover, it’s useful but if you are after peace and quiet then this is the place to be.

Small site stretching along the river Soane at Challon sur Soane, Burgundy.

The site is almost underneath the bridge, backed by fields but the opposite side of the river quite industrial. There is a pleasant looking bar and restaurant at reception, but I did not try it. There is one small modern toilet block near reception and a larger one in the middle of the site which is older, both are cleaned twice daily.

A river path passes site with walkers, joggers and cyclists. It is an easy walk into town along the river and then crossing via two bridges. The town centre is large with lots of shops, restaurants and bars, some interesting old buildings but mostly concealed by more modern stuff. The town has a large hospital.

A large Carrerfour centre commercial is easy to reach, there are plenty of other shops. Free Wifi at MacDonalds either just over the bridge or near the Carrefour.

This is good place for a stop when heading south (or back north) on the A6 if you don’t want to stop at the municipal at Beaune, but plenty to see in the area if you are stopping over. It is quite close to the Chateau l’eperviere site ( read report) (camping cheque), which would be more suitable for someone wanting more facilities but not caring about being within walking distance of a town.

To Find Site:
The site is best approached via the village of Meursault. Leave the A6 at junction 25 (south) at Chalons and head for Chagny on the N6 and then north on the N74. Turn left in Meursault, signed for Monthelie. The roads through Meursault are quite narrow in places so just take it easy. From junction 24 (north) and Beaune take the N74 south and follow the same route from Meursault.

La Grappe d’Or is a very nice terraced site with wonderful views out across the surrounding countryside. The village of Meursault, famous for its wine, is a short walk away. It is a good alternative to the very busy and popular campsite in the town of Beaune.
Pitches are of reasonable size, some under trees and some more open. The site has a couple of toilet blocks which are of a good standard. There is also a bar/restaurant and a small shop.
When you book in you get a voucher for a free glass of wine if you eat in the restaurant. There is also a swimming pool and children’s play area. The pool seems also to be used by the locals.
This is a Eurocamp site, but they only have tents not static’s. Although we have used this site as a one or two day stop over it would make a good place for a longer stay. If you are interested in wine (not just drinking it!) there are many famous names close by. Beaune is also not far and very much worth a visit.
Out of season this site accepts Touring Cheques which can reduce the cost of your stay.

Site quite large (130 pitches), pitches variable sizes, quite uneven levels but fine for one night stay. You do have to arrive early to get a decent pitch for a longer stay as it does fill up fast.

Electric is standard Euro plug only (Hoorah).
Toilet blocks are a little grubby by nightfall and don’t have separate seats(the toilet seat is built into the bowl-flipping cold at 10:30pm).

Site fees are around €15 a night without Camping Cheques.
There is an on site restaurant, shop and pool with waterslide.

We took a walk into Mersault. Apart from lots of Caves there is one Petit Casino.....and two bars both of which close at 7pm!!.

From the site there is a panoramic viewpoint of the Mersault area.

To Find Site:- The site can be approached from either Chateau Chinon or Nevers. From the Nevers to Autun road, D978, take the D37 just before Chateau Chinon to Moulins-Engilbert and from here take the D 985 to St Honore. To site is on the D106 as to exit the town towards Vandenesse. From Nevers take the N81 towards Decize and Bourbon-Lancy. Just through Decize continue on N81 which bares off to the right to Cercy-la-Tour, from here take the D37 to Vandenesse and then the D106 to St Honore. The entrance and exit from the D106 is quite tight so care is required.

Camping les Bains is situated on the edge of the spa town of St Honore les Bains which is set in the Morvan Regional Park. The beautiful grounds in which the spa is set is a two minute walk from the campsite. In the town are shops and restaurants and a small supermarket. There is an unmanned filling station which only accepts credit cards, I suspect French ones only. There are many opportunities for days out and Decize is well worth a visit.

The site itself is quite mature with many lovely trees and the odd Red Squirrel! Pitches are divided by hedges and vary in size from medium to quite large.
This area of France had a fair amount of rain whilst we were there which did make the pitches a bit sticky underfoot. The site does not have any mobile homes but at one corner of the site is a small section with holiday chalets which seem popular with the French and Dutch.
There are good facilities for children with crazy golf, a very nice swimming pool and a large area set aside for things like volley ball.
There are a couple of toilet blocks which whilst they don’t appear to be very new they are of a good standard.
Next to the Reception is a bar/restaurant that serves basic meals. Bread can be ordered at the bar.
One advantage of Les Bains is that it accepts Touring Cheques from about the third week in August which makes for an economic stay. When we arrived on 22nd August the site was not very full so I expect you could always find space and for those that prefer a quiet site this could be a good choice.

When heading north or south on the A6/A31 take Autoroute towards Paris and then take first exit. This road takes you down into the town of Beaune, watch out for campsite signs to the right.

This is one of a group of really excellent municipal campsites in France and I can not recommend it highly enough. Although it is mainly used as an overnight stop it is certainly worth a stay of a few days. Popularity means that you have to arrive early as it is usually full by 3.00pm in high season. The pitches are mainly on gravel surrounded by hedges. Because of the layout larger outfits may have difficulties getting into some pitches. I understand twin axle vans are not accepted. The toilets and showers are to an excellent standard. The site as a small bar/restaurant which also does takeaway food. Just a short walk for the site is the centre of Beaune which is well worth a visit.

Exit A6 at Chalons Nord from north or Tournus from South and travel towards Sennecy le Grand. Take N6 and turn east onto D18 in Sennecy le Grand.

Unashamedly my favourite French site. In grounds of 16th century Chateau in rural France. Huge pitches. All with electric. Some with own water and waste posts. Hard standings. Shaded or un-shaded. Indoor and outdoor pools, Jacuzzi, Sauna, Bar, shop. Restaurant and Pizzeria take away. Entertainment on Friday evening. Wine tasting in Chateau cellars Thursday. Other activities organised as well. You can do the "French Flavour holiday" or please yourself. The owner invented French Flavour and the camping cheque. As I never go to France in July or August this is ideal. Excellent, clean facilities. Fishing lake. There is so much to see in the area.

Another Castels Site... This one has 135 pitches and is where Camping Cheques Started.
We were pitched on the entrance road so got a bit of traffic although there were plenty of pitches all round the site we could have chosen. We like a bit of life around us so we can pick up tips or check out new vans.
10amp electricity, but we lost it a few times for a couple of minutes - no major problem.

€21 per night. There is a plethora of facilities including Indoor and Outdoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi, laundry, bike hire, games room, shop etc.... The restaurant is excellent and we enjoyed a great 5 course meal for €28.50 each. There is also a takeaway serving pizzas and frites for those who don’t want to use the restaurant. They also seemed to be doing a roaring trade in Boeuf Bourgninon but you need to take them 2 pans to serve it in.

Facilities were clean and plenty of hot water was available. Don’t bother taking an alarm clock as the local duck population will be up long before you.

There are also a number of Eurocamp statics and tents on site but empty when we were there.

To find site:
Exit A6 at Chalons-sur-Saone and take N6 towards Sennecey-le-Grand, turn east on D18 and watch for campsite signs on outskirts of village.

We have used this site several times as an overnight stop en route to the South of France or back home and our latest visit was in early June in 2009.
After a gap of about 11 years we have certainly noticed the many positive improvements to the site. The campsite is situated in the grounds of a rather nice Chateau which over the years has gradually been restored to its former glory. Parts of the Chateau are used for various campsite functions but most are contained in the outbuildings. There is a shop, selling some useful basic items plus a very nice selection of local wines, has, along with the bar have been relocated to a rather nice courtyard. The site has a really nice restaurant.

There are two toilet blocks, one next to the pool near the Chateau and another new block further into the site. They are both kept spotlessly clean. Just outside the toilet block is a swimming pool complex.

There are two pitching areas, one close to the Chateau and the main part further away across a short causeway over a lake. Whilst most pitches are on grass there are quite a few on gravel hardstanding. They are all of a generous size.
Electric and water points are conveniently placed around the site.
Internet access is available at the bar either by fixed computers or WiFi but this is limited to the area around the bar and does not extend campsite wide. Prices are reasonable at €3 for 2 hours.

This campsite accepts Camping Cheques.
For anyone arriving at the campsite after reception closes there is a large parking area at the entrance.

This is an excellent site which does deserve a longer stay than just overnight. There would be lots to do in the area. I am not sure if it still happens but the owner used to organise wine tasting evenings which sounded very enjoyable.
